INTERNATIONAL MARKET: VC iLabs Capital is adding its two cents (a little more than that) to the Bollywood industry by acquiring a 60% stake Mumbai's Lehren Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. through its Affiliated Media Company subsidiary in order to launch the first Bollywood news and gossip channel. The anticipated launch date is for April 14 with the dry run happening in mid-March. The "Hinglish" free-to-air Lehren TV will have chat and gossip formats and more. Lehren will include a broadband portal and a 10,000-hour video library. In addition to buying the Lehren stake, iLabs is launching a Mumbai-based, Hindi-language station titled TV9 Mumbai through Associated Broadcasting Company Pvt Ltd. iLabs and Unified Group own 80% of the latter company. The U.S.' Arqiva has been chosen by BET International as the platform on which it will launch Black Entertainment Television's new European Sky channel as of late last week. The launch follows a month of testing on the Eurobird satellite, and the deal will span five years. Available via the Sky guide, BET will be accessible to more than 8.8 million digital satellite homes. The new service originates from BET's Washington, DC studios and connects to Arqiva's facilities in the U.K. via transatlantic fiber. The 1-year old, English-language Art Channel has pointed itself in the direction of Lagardere Television International (LTI), inking an agreement with the international distributor to be its European rep. Under the deal, LTI will exclusively represent the channel in Eastern Europe, Russia, and Scandinavia in addition to Africa. The Art Channel, which is distributed from Eutelsat W2 and in France, airs short-form content such as video art, performances, documentaries, exhibition openings, and more. The format for Italy's Ciao Darwin game show has been acquired by the U.S.' ABC and France's Endemol for local remakes from Distraction Formats. In addition to a soon-to-be announced Australian deal, recent sales have been made to Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City Television, Poland's TVN, Romania's TVR, Hungary's TV2, the French-Canadian TVA and SRC networks, and Greece's Antenna TV. The 5-year old original show, developed by RTI Mediaset, has been airing on Italy's Canale5. Following their recent U.S. announcement, Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) and Nelvana Enterprises are again teaming up for the new anime property, Bakugan. CNE will serve as the brand's licensing agent for the non-toy related categories across Europe and Africa. The series is a co-production from Nelvana Enterprises, Spin Master Ltd., Sega Toys Ltd., TMS Entertainment, Ltd., Japan Vistec Inc. and Sega Corporation, with animation by Japan Vistec Inc. and TMS Entertainment, Ltd. Spin Master is already the master toy partner. The Bakugan television series, aimed at boys aged 6 to 11, will launch in the U.K. on Cartoon Network in 2008 and will subsequently roll out across the rest of the EMEA territories. HISPANIC MARKET: It is time for some more February sweeps reporting culled from Nielsen Media Research … TeleFutura has seen double-digit growth in primetime this February 2008 sweep period versus the February 2007 sweep among the major demos. For Persons 2+, it experienced a 12% increase (708,000 vs. 633,000) while showing +13% among A18-49 (445,000 vs. 394,000). The highest leap was for W18-34 with +17%, according to Nielsen's NTI ratings. EXECUTIVE MOVES: The first CEO named at Endemol U.K. in 3 years is moving in as the company undergoes a senior management restructuring. Tim Hincks, Endemol U.K.'s current Chief Creative Officer, will take over the position to push the company's creative direction and international expansion while also taking a position on the parent company's international committee. Other recent appointments include MDs Lucas Church and Richard Johnston as the new COO and CFO, respectively. V-me named Frank Donaldson as SVP and Director/Sales, reporting to V-me President, Carmen DiRienzo, from his New York base. In addition to managing national ad and sponsorship revenue, Frank will oversee sales operations and the national sales team's expansion. Frank's most recent position was with Univision/Telefutura as SVP/National Sales. Pauline Bohm has been upped to SVP/Marketing for NBC Universal International Television Distribution from her prior position as VP/Marketing. She will continue to develop and implement international marketing strategies for the company and its television and feature film product portfolio in addition to managing international brand strategy and presence at all international sales markets and events. Pauline will oversee teams based in LA and London while being based in LA and reporting to President Belinda Menendez. NBC Universal International Television Distribution has also promoted Rachel Mansson to VP/Marketing, International New Media. Reporting to Pauline, she will continue overseeing marketing efforts for the international new media unit, spanning EST, VOD and SVOD, cable, satellite, digital terrestrial television, internet, and mobile. She is also responsible for the overall brand management of PictureBox, NBC Universal's new SVOD service now available on multiple platforms in the U.K., Poland and Singapore.
