INTERNATIONAL MARKET: De Agostini Communications' French subsidiary, Marathon Group, bought a controlling stake in Renaud Le Van Kim's 14-year old KM Production. Renaud and his teams will maintain their autonomy for both creation and operations. KM is a TV and entertainment production company, specializing in large-scale promotional event organization in Worldvision, entertainment programs, documentaries, show captions and TV channel design and engineering. The 2-year old Marathon Group, first formed when 4 French major audiovisual companies, Marathon, Marathon Media, Tel Images, and Adventures Line Productions united, joined De Agostini Communications in July 2007. Following NBC Universal's recent purchase of the U.K.'s Sparrowhawk, a decision has been made to not renew its distribution deal with Germany's EM.Entertainment. Belgium's Studio 100 has now signed on to rep the kids company's library internationally for 2008 only as of the beginning of April when Sparrowhawk and EM's agreement ends. The deal excludes representation in Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Switzerland, and the U.S. EM.Sport Media will be spinning off the division, hence the reason for the short-term agreement according to Variety. The GM of Studio 100's Studio 100 Media subsidiary in Germany, Patrick Elmendorff will oversee both Studio 100 and EM.Entertainment's distribution. Globo TV Sports is bringing itself to the North American market in partnership with Media Zone, an online broadcasts company. The deal, covering Internet and mobile phone media, includes the live transmission of the 82 games from the Brazilian Magic Football package of 2008 and 46 editions of FootBrazil, a weekly program about Brazilian football. Digital Rights Group's Portman Film & Television picked up the international distribution rights to a range of new drama titles from Australian and New Zealand networks. Titles include Canal Road (13x60-minute returnable format) from Australia's Nine Network, The Hothouse (7x60-minute primetime drama) produced by The Gibson Group for New Zealand's TV One, and the 100-minute TV Movie Blood In The Sand, produced by Taylor Media and commissioned by ABC Australia. Lion Television has been commissioned by The Open University for BBC Four to produce Chinese Schools, a 5x60-minute observational documentary series, which will follow a group of families, teachers and children from a small rural Chinese town over the course of an academic year. The series will be distributed by OU Worldwide. Granada International acquired the global distribution rights (excluding U.K. DVD rights) to the new children's live action series, Captain Mack, produced by Fireback Entertainment. The 52x11-minute series for K3-6 viewers was originally commissioned by CITV. CROSS-MARKET: Correction: Add on another 12 million to the total quoted in yesterday's edition for Gospel Music Channel's total subscriber base. The network's subscriber total is approximately 40 million rather than the nearly 28 million subscribers, which represents only those subscribers added in just the past 12 months.
