It's Tuesday, February 19, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Disney's Southeast Asia-based subsidiary, The Walt Disney Co. Pte. Ltd., will increase its share in India's UTV Software to 32.1%, subject to regulatory approval. At the same time, Disney will also purchase a 15% stake in UTV Global Broadcasting Limited for $30 million while UTV will purchase a 75% stake for $60 million. The remaining 10% will go to the Promoter Group. UTV produces content for film, TV, and interactive platforms while UGBL has 2 youth channels and a soon-to-launch movie channel through its subsidiaries. Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) will represent Strix Television's complete catalog in all of Asia, excluding Japan. Under the exclusive deal, SPTI will represent over 70 formats from Strix for license to Asian broadcasters or SPTI to directly produce. This is actually their second time working together since October 2007 where SPTI represents Strix Television's catalog in Latin America. The formats included in the deal are The Farm, The Bar, Phone Booth, and others. The date for the launch of the BBC's new Arabic-language network is fast approaching. Initially launching with 12 hours of programming a day on March 11, BBC Arabic Service will quickly morph into 24-hour broadcasting within the next 6 months. Jim Pattison Entertainment has acquired Guinness World Records from Hit Entertainment. The terms of the deal were not released, but British newspapers are reporting the deal to be worth in the neighborhood of $180 million. The Jim Pattison Group is the parent company of Patterson Entertainment and Ripley Entertainment, which for the last decade has held the rights to develop and operate Guinness World Records museums and attractions. There are currently six Guinness World Record attractions, including Japan, Canada, the US, and Denmark. Ripley's operates 30 Ripley's Believe It or Not Museums (aka Odditoriums), with another to open in London in August 2008. Germany's KI.KA and European Film Partners (EFP) of the Netherlands have signed on to become co-production partners on Chloe's Closet (52x11), the new animated fantasy-discovery TV series for preschoolers from Mike Young Productions (MYP). EFP will also now serve as distribution agent on a variety of MYP and MoonScoop-produced shows in Benelux, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. KI.KA and EFP join MYP and co-producers S4C, Trickompany, Animation Dimension, and Telegael on Chloe's Closet, which will be created at studios in Wales, Germany, India, and Ireland. Mediatoon's 52-episode CGI remake of The Magic Roundabout has been picked up by Australia's ABC, New Zealand's Nickelodeon, Nickelodeon Asia, Germany's ZDF, Portugal's RTP, Finland's YLE, Al Jazeera Children's Channel in the Middle East, Czech Republic's Minimax, and Estonia's ETV. The 11-minute show, a Film Action and Ellipsanime Productions production targeting the K4-8 crowd, will be done in April, per C21.
