Good morning. It's Thursday, February 14, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

In protest to President Nicolas Sarkozy's plan to ban ads on French public broadcasting, state-run TV and radio workers held a one day strike.  As a result, several news updates and live shows were pulled from schedules.  This was the largest 1-day strike in this particular sector since 1974 involving six unions (11,000 France Televisions, France 24, and TV5 Monde employees) and 4,000 public radio station staffers.

Fremantlemedia Enterprises is launching its own DVD label down under to manage home entertainment content in Australia and New Zealand.  FHE Australia will be run by a local team who will work closely with destra vision, the subsidiary's chosen Australian distributor.  In addition to releases FME titles through the new label, the company is still looking to acquire new content locally and globally.

Rive Gauche Television has closed post-NATPE sales several series and specials.
  • In Germany, NBC Universal has acquired Sports Disasters #2-6 series, Monster Machines, Great Streets, and World's Most: Daring Robberies while Blue Eyes took Raw History: The Hitler Tape.
  • ITV4 (U.K.) has World's Most, Bounty Hunters, and World's Most Dangerous Sports Events.
  • Bravo (U.K.) secured 101 Things Removed from the Human Body and Another 101 Things Removed from the Human Body.  Another U.K. network, Living TV, bought Outrageous Home Videos series.
  • Planete Cable (France) bought Dino Lab and Intra Communications (Russia and CIS) brought in Did You See That? #1 & #2 series.
  • Photoplay (Greece) acquired Sports Disasters series #2-6, Wild Weddings series 1 & 2, and World's Most.

The Sharpe Company appointed International Film Group as the Australian licensing and merchandising agent for three of its properties, including preschool Franny's Feet, animated Naughty Naughty Pets, and Lela Lee's Angry Little Girls.

Virgin Media Television's LIVING entertainment channel has commissioned a new 60-minute series, Strictly Come Dieting, from Mentorn. The new reality series works with contestants to boogie away the body fat by pairing up with dance pros. They will be judged on weight loss, technical style, and panache. The 8-part series will air on LIVING in Summer 2008.

Produced by Sesame Workshop in association with Jakarta-based Creative Indigo Production, the new Jalan Sesama will tackle serious issues impacting the children of Indonesia. The daily 52x30 kids series debuts on Trans7 on February 18.

The 30-minute Bindi: The Jungle Girl has been sold by Australia's ABC to a bunch of international folks.  The 26-episode kids wildlife show has been picked up by Finland's MTV Oy, Poland's Canal+, and the Middle East's MBC, according to TBI vision.

As part of ESPN's overall coverage of the 2008 McDonald's NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, ESPN International will televise the NBA All-Star Game,Rookie Challenge and NBA All-Star Saturday to 46 countries including viewers in Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, and Africa.

Speaking of ESPN, here are some interesting facts about its 28+ year old SportsCenter … Since its first telecast on September 7, 1979, the show now airs in 136 countries and territories in 9 languages with 15 original versions of produced around the world (including the U.S. version) and 81 SportsCenter anchors worldwide. The amount of original editions of SportsCenter produced to date globally is 41,234. Bet you didn't know these tidbits … The U.S. SportsCenter's makeup team uses 25 shades of concealers and foundations and 2,700 makeup removal wipes per month.

CROSS-MARKET:

Ad sales firm WorldLink signed a representation deal with Post-Newsweek Stations' six major market stations, as well as four LATV affiliates owned and operated by Post-Newsweek. WorldLink will be responsible for all long-form direct response ad sales for Post-Newsweek's stations KPRC (Houston), WDIV (Detroit), WPLG (Miami-Ft. Lauderdale), WKMG (Orlando), KSAT (San Antonio), and WJXT (Jacksonville). In addition, WorldLink also will oversee short and long-form direct response ad sales for Post-Newsweek's four bilingual LATV affiliates in Houston, Miami, Orlando and San Antonio.
