INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Central European Media Enterprises Ltd. (CME) has taken an interest in Studio 1+1, a minor one that is. The company and its partners acquired all minority stakes in the Studio 1+1 Group of companies to own 90% of Studio 1+1 and the right to buy the remaining 10%. Currently CME holds 60% of Studio 1+1. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2Q 2008 following regulatory approvals. The 30% interest CME will acquire will be from Igor Kolomoisky pursuant for approximately $219.6 million. The remaining 10%, if purchased by CME from Boris Fuchsmann and Alexander Rodnyansky, would be valued at an initial minimum price of $95.4 million in the first year, $102.3 in the second, and thereafter $109.1 million. MTV Networks International is teaming up with Sony BMG to make MTV content available for live streaming from the MSN Video portal. Plans are also in the works to allow Messenger TV users to IM fav clips within the conversation. Shows already mentioned as part of the partnership include South Park, Pimp My Ride, and Punk'd. The first launches will happen in the U.K. and Western Europe followed by Belgium, Denmark, and Norway later in 2008. A bit of international-U.S. kids action happening this week.
NATPE "tidbits:" International networks and their 2008 programming and marketing directions We sat down with FujiSankei Communications Group's Fuji Television Network, Inc. (FTN), the biggest seller of Asian content in Asia, at NATPE to find out what they are up to and plans for this year. Congrats to the mother company for its 50th anniversary in August 2008!! FTN is producing a pilot for the U.S.' Fox in the next few months with the BBC and Australia's Channel 9 (and others) also picking up the episode. Other series making headways include Fremantle Media-produced and distributed Hole in the Wall (Tokyo-based), The Pawn King, and NATPE first-timer Love Crossroads. Did you know that the original Iron Chef is FTN's as well? Fine Living has signed on to begin airing 85 episodes of the original Japanese version in May. FTN is looking to bring the old back over the next year by pulling library Fuji shows to format for the international market in addition to new content. The company is also interested in event growth such as Iron Chef-related events. Here's the scoop on E! International … The company has been busy with the Comcast International Media Group rebranding and is now looking forward to expanding its sports genre over the next year. It is pursuing an aggressive rollout of Golf Channel and its programming, including a big U.K. channel launch. Sales in Spain and Scandinavia and bolstering more programming in U.K. are also on the priority list as will be the emerging golf interest market in the Middle East. Internationally, the company is focusing on new media with local language sites in Italy, Germany, France, and the U.K. (February 1 was the official launch). Australia will follow on February 14. The initial focus will be on Hollywood with plans to grow local coverage. For G4, the focus will change to be more male-oriented rather than "just games." Super Big Product Fun Show is a fake infomercial show being sold as 13x30 or 26x11. In addition to new specials coming out, Snoop Dog's Father Hood and Keeping Up with the Kardashians will be up on the list to leverage performance in the U.S. market to go international by targeting English-language territories first. Vancouver-based Antares Pictures Inc., part of the multi-national Antares Media Group, is working on expanding its current series into more production. Here's a cool show that got the official rubber stamp from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (approval, support, and advice) and unofficial okays from other security agencies … Tripwire is a limited, serial format series (8 eps a season, twice a year) that is in continuous production and reaches across multi-platforms. Deals are in the works internationally. The high-def, 68-ep Relationships and Psychics Journey, a co-production with a U.S. company, join the roster with Shadows. The latter is a fully interactive, action/adventure drama in development. The internet-based game will be produced with 8 eps a season. Keep an eye out in tomorrow's edition for more tidbits on Media Entertainment Group, Debmar Mercury International, and Alterna'TV Select. HISPANIC MARKET: Galavision will premiere Moda al Rescate (Fashion to the Rescue), a new show with host Dayana Garroz that gives a deserving viewer a complete head-to-toe makeover, on February 7 at 10p. Casting Call: AOL Latino is looking for submissions for the second season of the Fashionista contest, in which up-and-coming Latino designers can submit their designs for a chance to appear on AOL Latino and to dress a celeb for a red carpet event as well as be featured in People en Espanol.
