Good morning. It's Friday, January 25, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

The U.K.'s Tern Television has extended its partnership with BBC Worldwide by picking up a 3-year first look deal.  Tern produces shows such as UKTV commissions Spa of Embarrassing Illnesses and How to Find a Husband.

Sandra Carter Global, Inc. (SCG) and Sandra Carter International will merge their programming into Lightworks Enterprises, Inc.'s Lightworks Program Distribution, Inc. (LPD). LPD President/MD, John Cuddihy, will head up the combined operations. Sandra Carter, founder and principal of the 25-year old Sandra Carter Global, Inc., will become LPD's EVP/Business Development.  Lightworks will acquire SCG's entire programming catalog as well as the company's current productions, including shows such as 24 Days of Christmas and Women of the World.

The Disney Cinemagic French-language feed is one of 6 new channels added to the European Transmission Centre (ETC) of Ascent Media's Network Services in London. These newbies will bring the ETC broadcast total from its launch back in March 2007 to 14 channels in 9 languages.

Bennett Media Worldwide (BMW) is clearing out the men following 4 new sales for its new men's lifestyle television series, The MEN7 Show. Targeting M25-54 viewers, the weekly series has been cleared for 7TV Channel (Russia), IOL Broadband (India), Latvian Television Network (Latvia), and Kabel Plus (Czech Republic/Slovakia).  Other pre-NATPE deals for BMW include ABS/CBN (Philippines) for Bikini Destinations, The Wild Side, Flow, Destination X, and Stag. Bulgaria's Triada Communications took The Billionaires Car Club while VTR Banda Ancha (Chile) has Bikini Destinations, The Wild Side, The Extremists, and Destination X.

Pre-NATPE deals are in the air for Rive Gauche Television.  The company inked licensing deals for several 30 minute reality shows heading into next week's market.
  • Why They Run (13 eps) went to ITV 4 (U.K.), 9 Network (Australia), and SBS Broadcasting (Netherlands).
  • Video Zonkers, Season 1 (52 eps) has been sold to TV4 (Sweden), FX Italy (Italy), Prime (New Zealand), and AXN (Pan Asia & India).
  • Real Strange (13 eps) has been acquired by Zone Reality (U.K.), Zone Reality (Cyprus, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Africa, and the Middle East), Viasat (Russia), and UBC (Thailand).
  • Whacked Out Sports, Season 1 (52 eps) has been licensed to RTL Television (Germany), Planete Cable (France), and Photoplay Productions (Greece) while Season 2 went to Channel 5 (U.K.) and FX Italy (Italy).
  • Last, but definitely not least (remember, you are the alpha), the 60-minute Dog Whisperer, Seasons 1-4 (91 eps) has been licensed to Cuatro (Spain), TV Norge (Norway), Israel Broadcasting Authority (Israel), and MTV OY (Finland).

Close to 300 hours of programming will make its way to Latin America courtesy of FremantleMedia Enterprises.
  • The BRIT Awards 2008 was sold to TNT (pan-regional) and DirecTV while Janice Dickinson Season 2 and Project Runway Season 4 make their ways to GloboSat and Sky People & Arts, respectively.
  • Terrestrials Surinam and St. Lucia are singing with American Idol for the first time with pan-regional Sony Channel doing the seventh season for the sixth consecutive year.
  • Infinito is greening it up with Big Ideas for a Small Planet.
  • Mexico's Canal 11 takes Hannibal: Enemy of Rome, The Mysterious Death of Cleopatra, and two others while Ecuavsia opts for 4 shows.
  • Brazil's TV Escola secured Story of 1.
  • Telefe is the first Latin American broadcaster to snatch the Hole in the Wall format and Megavision in Chile has an additional 50 episodes of its version of Three's Company (Tres son Mulitud).

V-me has inked with Cisneros Group's Venevision International to begin distributing V-me's original Estudio Billboard program on VOD, home video, cable, satellite, and free TV worldwide.

HISPANIC MARKET:

Cablevision Systems Corp. has added a new network, Dominican View, to its iO en espanol (iOe) package, bringing up the total to 38 channels.  Available on iO TV channel 213, Cablevision will be the first to distribute the network in the U.S.  It broadcasts sports, news, and special events from around the Caribbean.

WSBS-Mega TV has harnessed actor/film director/comedian Alexis Valdes into a new weekday show, Alexis, debuting on January 28 at 9p on Mega TV and 10p PT on DirecTV Mas Channel 405 nationwide.  It will feature an actor-laden team who will support the guests and situations that characterize the variety TV show that has made Alexis well-known.

A few snippets from the result of comScore's look into the online habits of young Latinos presented as part of Si TV's Lunch & Learn: Young Latinos Online … MySpace.com takes the #1 spot among Hispanics for social sites, followed by AOL Networks (social network), Yahoo! Social Media, Blogger.com, and then Facebook.com.  Multimedia entertainment sites are visited by 64% of Hispanics with YouTube leading the pack with over 30%, followed by iTunes Software (application) with over 15%.  In terms of blogging, the top 10 Hispanic blog site list found by comScore is topped by Blogger by a long shot with nearly 20%.  In comparison, Windows Live Spaces comes in second with less than 10% (Source: comScore Media Metrix - Nov 07)

LATAM MARKET:

Nickelodeon Latin America, in collaboration with UNICEF, is pushing off on a new initiative designed to motivate positive changes in children's daily lives throughout Latin America.  Starting January 28, Nick's new character, Verdito, will make daily on-screen appearances offering suggestions, challenges, and ideas to make the world a better place. (Now if we could only get us adults to do more too!)  The global initiative will also give kids a chance to share their opinions on these issues and take action.

AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:

TV One packed February full of specials and more to celebrate Black History Month with Lessons from Little Rock: A National Report Card as a key component of the schedule.  The new documentary will debut on February 10 from 10-11p hosted and co-exec'd by actor/author Hill Harper.  It revisits the story of the Little Rock 9, the nine African American students who first integrated an all-white high school in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957 and the state of education for black Americans 50 years later. Ebony Fashion Fair: 50 Years of Style will also premiere in the same hour on February 17.

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

Logo officially launched 15 original and syndicated video blogs viewable across Logo's family of websites, including www.LOGOonline.com , www.AfterEllen.com , www.AfterElton.com , www.VisibleVote08.com , and www.NewNowNext.com .  The slate of vlogs include some from Kate Clinton (Hilarity Clinton), Jill Bennett (We're Getting Nowhere), and others.

EXECUTIVE MOVES:

Chellomedia's Chello Zone subsidiary appointed Wayne Dunsford as GM of the recently launched global pre-school channel JimJam.  He has been linked to JimJam since its inception, playing a key role in creating HIT Entertainment and Chellomedia's joint venture.Wayne brings almost 20 years of channel management experience to the role from his previous positions at BBC TV Europe, BBC Worldwide's Director of Channels, EMEIA, and more.

Based out of Miami, Allan Navarrete has been named VP/Sales Liaison for Latin America for NBC Universal International Television Distribution.  Reporting to Maria Sanchez, SVP/Sales Liaison, he will oversee free, pay and basic cable TV initiatives.  Allan joins NBC Universal from Discovery Communications, Inc, where he was VP/Affiliate Distribution and Marketing, U.S. Hispanic Networks.
