INTERNATIONAL MARKET: German indie distributor Kinowelt has been fully acquired by France's StudioCanal, turning the film company into the biggest movie distributor on the pan-European block. Kinowelt's 7,000+ titles will be added to StudioCanal's 5,000+ catalog. The company's founders, Michael and Rainer Koelmel, will continue to serve with Michael acting as head of strategy and Rainer heading up acquisitions. For the estimated sum of $44.3 million, the U.K.'s 3i venture capital fund has picked up a 40% stake in Spain's Boomerang TV. Enrique Cerezo and Jose Manuel Lorenzo and Boomerang's founders, Pedro Ricote and Jose Abril, are the other shareholders. With the new infusion of capital, the company is reportedly looking into growing 3G mobile and web content, according to Variety. The 14th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards are traveling around the globe following a slew of deals signed by Alfred Haber Distribution, Inc. The upcoming 120-minute event is going to Showtime (Australia), SunTV (Canada), Prosieben (Germany), Sky Network (New Zealand), STAR (Southeast Asia), Tel-Ad (Israel), Filmnet (Greece), VTM (Belgium), SBT (Brazil), Kanal 5 (Sweden), AKS (Turkey), MBC (Middle East), Non-Stop (Scandinavia), ITC Screen (Iceland), TV6 (Ireland), and ABS-CBN (Philippines). The show airs live in the U.S. on TNT and TBS on January 27. Indie distributor TargetVision secured international rights from Tel-Air Interests to Spring Break Reunion, a package of four 60-minute specials (also a 2x120 special) with the top names in 1960s rock-n-roll. Virgin Media Television-owned entertainment channel LIVING inked a deal with Disney ABC International Television to acquire ABC's The Next Best Thing. The show will air on LIVING2 in early 2008. HISPANIC MARKET: Telecinco is starting its expansion into the U.S. market by purchasing a 28.3% stake in CaribeVision, a new network in which it is a founding investor. The $32 million investment is also supported by Mexico's Burillo-Azcarraga family (Televisa's founders). The Spanish-language channel will air on East Coast from operating hubs in Miami, New York, and Puerto Rico. Italy's Mediaset has a majority stake in the Spanish broadcaster. A 5-year agreement has been signed by Azteca America with Pappas Telecasting to grant Azteca America the right to continue airing its programming until December 2012 on the LA flagship station, KAZA. Under the contract, the $129 million payable by Pappas Telecasting to Azteca America has been adjusted and extended. As part of the FCC mandate to convert from analog to digital by 2009, Pappas and Azteca America have included an option to Pappas that allows for TuVision to be broadcast in one of KAZA-DT's secondary digital channels alongside Azteca America's primary channel as part of a digital package. In other Azteca America news, the network added Eugene, Oregon as its 62nd affiliate market following the launch on KXOR. Churchill Media expects to add it on Comcast's channel 617 in Eugene soon. MEGA TV is heading to sunnier weather following a new exclusive contract deal between Spanish Broadcasting System, Inc. and DIRECTV to air programming in Puerto Rico through DIRECTV's Channel 169. AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET: ION Media Networks, Inc., in collaboration with African American TV syndicator Star Media and Omnicom's OMG Entertainment & Sports unit, inked a strategic partnership for the creation and exhibition of African American programming on the ION Television Network. The collaboration will initially start off with urban and diverse content from Warner Bros. and other TV studios with the long term goal to reinvest into an original programming fund to create new content. The initiative launched this week on Monday from 6-7p. EXECUTIVE MOVES: Endemol USA Latino has a new SVP reporting to Endemol North America's chairman, David Goldberg. Laurens Drillich, based in Miami, will oversee the U.S. Hispanic production unit as well as Endemol's Mexican operations. Laurens is not new to the company. He headed up Endemol Mexico as MD and Creative Director in 2001. Previously he served as the chairman and CEO of Holland's BNN broadcaster. The new Director/Entertainment at UKTV is Christian Drobnyk. Reporting to Controller Matthew Littleford, Christian will head up editorial and commercial efforts for Dave, UKTV Gold and UKTV Drama when he begins his position in March.
