CYNTHIA TURNER'S Cynopsis: MCE 05/09/06 Good Morning. It's Tuesday, May 9, 2006, and this is your first early morning Multi-Cultural briefing. HISPANIC MARKET: Kids TV real estate is growing again with the announcement of a new kids network featuring bilingual programming content, from the combined efforts of Ion Media Networks (f/k/a Paxson Communications), Scholastic, NBC Universal, Telemundo, Corus Entertainment and Classic Media/Big Idea. The as yet unnamed network, referred to temporarily by the consortium as Smart Place for Kids, will launch September 2, 2006. It will air across multiple distribution platforms including programming blocks on Ion's 60 broadcast stations, on NBC and Telemundo's Saturday morning slots. The latter will occur from October with plans to air the block on Sunday mornings come January 2007 in addition to a new 24/7 digital kids broadcast channel, VOD services and a branded website. Each of the content providing partners will produce on original series per year for the network in addition to their existing programming content available to the network. Ion Media Networks led the effort to establish the coalition and will hold 51% of the network, with the content partners sharing equally in the remaining 49%. The network will be managed by a board comprised of people from all partners. The programming line-up and the name of the network are expected to be announced soon. Telemundo is partnering with Chilean film/TV producer Rivas & Rivas to produce its Loteria format. The series is currently being taped at Telemundo Studios in Miami. Loteria airs Saturdays at 730p. David Posada will serve as director while Aurelio Valcarcel exec produces. The original Chilean series, La Vida es una Loteria, has been airing for four seasons with a fifth currently in production. Azteca America will debut a new daily sports news program titled Los Protagonistas a Nivel Mundial on June 5 at 10p. It will air through July 9. The show will include daily soccer updates with commentary by veteran Azteca reporter David Faitelson. Other show segments include fashion, culture and cuisine from cities throughout Germany. LATAM MARKET: Mexican network TV Azteca is reportedly in “good faith” talks with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This follows on speculation that owner Ricardo Salinas had concluded an agreement with the SEC connected to fraud charges. No further comments were made by the network, which has previously denied the charges. The SEC had no comment. Last year the government agency charged the network, Ricardo and two execs with participating in a plan to conceal and push a $109 million profit from a debt deal to Ricardo.
