International 01/11/08 Good morning. It's Friday, January 11, 2008, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Dufferin Gate Productions Inc. now fully belongs to Toronto's Peace Arch Entertainment Group Inc. after the latter completed the acquisition of the remaining 59.99% of the shares. PeaceArch initially acquired 40.01% of Dufferin Gate in July 2007. Under the terms of the deal, Peace Arch acquired all of the shares of Dufferin Gate for approximately CAD $5.4 million in cash plus CAD $600,000 in common shares of Peace Arch. U.K. rights company Entara Ltd has adopted the Parthenon Entertainment Group (PEG) name, as of this month. All Entara's properties, including Magic Roundabout, Domo, the Puppy in my Pocket toy brands, HABBO, Jakers!, and Those Scurvy Rascals will be managed within a Parthenon Entertainment Group structure, which includes both a factual and children's IP portfolio. PEG CEO Carl Hall founded Parthenon Entertainment in 2002 initially as a distributor of wildlife programs followed by an expansion into factual and factual entertainment and a stand-alone kids division, Parthenon Kids. John Bullivant, former Director/Programs at TV-Loonland and MD of Kickback Media, and Iain Russell, former Head/Productions at The London Studios and an ex MD of Fire Mountain Productions, have joined forces to launch new indie Fireback Entertainment Ltd. The U.K. company is currently in production of its first, fully-funded CITV commission Captain Mack, a 52x11 live-action, K4-6-targeted series. It tells the adventures of the brave and daring Sky Captain, taking its inspiration from the 1960's live action show Batman. Fireback will have the international rights and is in final negotiations to secure a worldwide TV and video distributor. Sony Pictures Television International signed a VOD deal with Belgium telecom operator Belgacom to offer current and library titles. The service went live on at the end of November. January 16 is the day Al Jazeera English will debut in Hong Kong on Hong Kong Cable after the network struck a deal Hong Kong Cable Limited. The Hong Kong channel will be supported by the Al Jazeera's Kuala Lumpur-based broadcast center. Orange signed with Spanish producer rights protection society Egeda to air movies on Orange's VOD platforms in Spain. The deal covers broadband, 3G cell phones, and Orange's website, according to Variety. ProSiebenSat.1 Group's SevenOne International global programming sales division sold Sat.1's telenovela Love is in the Air to Polish public broadcaster TVP1. Launched this week, the show will run daily in two back-to-back episodes at 310p under the Polish title Milosc puka do drzwi (Love knocks on the door). Toronto-based Breakthrough Entertainment Inc. has acquired the worldwide rights to The World Without US, a new feature length documentary looking at the implications and consequences of U.S. military involvement in the world today. DCD Media plc's September Films division has been commissioned by the U.K.'s Channel 4 to produce the 60-minute The Real Elephant Man documentary. It follows the work of Professor Xu, a revolutionary Chinese physician, who deals with abnormal tumors that other doctors have been too afraid to challenge. Bulldog Licensing completed new U.K. license deals for the Thumb Wrestling Federation: TWF with Aykroyds TPD (kids nightwear, undies, adult t-shirts) and Sambro (toys, e.g. thumb wrestling masks, toy wrestling ring). Created by U.S.-based Animation Collective, the series airs Monday-Thursday afternoons as part of the CBBC block on BBC One and on BBC Two's Saturday morning TMi. A fourth season of TWF is currently in production. Belgium's VTM and Bulgaria's BTV picked up the Psychic Challenge format from the U.K.'s RDF Rights, which distributes the show from Benelux's TeVe Partners and Scandinavia's Nordisk Film, according to C21. 4Kids Entertainment signed new broadcast licensing deals for the CGI animated series Viva Pinata (52x30 or 104x11) with Ten Network (Australia), Cartoon Network Latin America, and Digiturk JOJO Channel (Turkey). New episodes of the series are slated to debut on February 15, April 1, and November 2008 respectively. A 4Kids and YTV (Canada) co-production, Viva Pinata is produced by the animation studio Bardel Entertainment. Program Call: It's that time of the year again. EXECUTIVE MOVES: After 11 years on its exec board, Lothar Lanz, ProSiebenSat.1's CFO, is leaving the company but will remain on board until a successor is named.
