It's Friday, December 21, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Canada's Peace Arch Entertainment Group Inc. is contemplating taking action with a takeover bid for London's ContentFilm plc film and TV sales/distribution company. Estimated at $35 million, the proposed bid will include ContentFilm's ContentFilm International film sales and finance unit, Fireworks International film and TV library sales division, and U.S.-based Allumination FilmWorks DVD distribution arm. A new, multi-year agreement between Disney-ABC International Television and Russian state broadcaster Channel One will cover the licensing of features, live action series, animated shows, and made-for-TV movies in addition to the launch of monthly family film timeslot, The Wonderful World of Disney. The slot will run monthly for 10 months a year. Canada's CTV commissioned Sniper (working title) as one of two new 13-episode, 60-minute dramas series to air in Spring 2008. It focuses on one of Canada's elite police forces while the second show, The Listener, is about a young paramedic with mind-reading powers. Both series were part of CTV's first pilot productions this past summer. BBC Drama is looking for ideas for two new youth-targeted series the network would like to air on BBC Three and the T12-16-focused BBC Switch in Winter 2009. Pitches from indie producers are being encouraged with the winning company to collaborate with the BBC's drama unit and BBC Switch. BBC Fiction controller Jane Tranter will handle the commissions. 9 mm: Sao Paulo, Fox International Channels' first original series in Latin America, has started production for an expected 1Q2008 premiere. The four, 60-minute episodes, produced by Monshoot Pictures, look at law enforcement in Latin America. Colombia's Caracol TV, Uruguay's Montecarlo TV, and Bolivia's Red Uno acquired the JC Films-produced, 21-episode My Problem with Women series from Frecuencia Latina International. With these new sales, the 60-minute show will air in over 20 territories, according to World Screen. CROSS-MARKET: Ad spending for the first three quarters of 2007 decreased -0.1% over the same period last year, with Internet continuing to demonstrate the strongest performance with a growth of 15.9%. According to preliminary figures from The Nielsen Company's Nielsen Monitor-Plus, other categories that showed an increase during the first three quarters of this year were: national magazines (7.7%), national Sunday supplements (6.0%), outdoor (5.7%), and national cable TV (1.2%). Spanish-language TV experienced only grew by 0.5% while the local newspaper category declined by 7.4%. HISPANIC MARKET: Mexico's TV Azteca, S.A. de C.V. and U.S.-based Telemundo Network Group LLC jointly announced that they have settled their pending lawsuits. According to the statement, neither company acknowledges any liability for claims in prior litigation while recognizing each other's contractual rights. As for the future, they have agreed to try to resolve problems before taking legal actions against one another. The legal dispute started in 2005 after TV Azteca submitted a breach of contract lawsuit against Nostromo and Alan Tacher as they began work on Telemundo's new Quinceanera reality series. EXECUTIVE MOVES: After 7 years at Endemol, Daniel Lew, Executive Director/Operations, Latin America, is leaving the company after regional restructuring. He first joined the company as Endemol Interactive Media Argentina's CEO and then became Head/Interactive Businesses, Latin America.
