It's Monday, December 17, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: One of Fox International Channels' newest acquisitions, the toddler-targeted Baby TV, will make a 2-year journey to Asia for its own co-branded block. YoYo Baby TV will debut today on YoYo TV as a weekday show airing from 9-930a and 130-2p with more than 30 Baby TV shows to be offered commercial-free on the Taiwanese children's channel. Dailymotion and the localized French YouTube are likely to be sued by France's TF1 broadcaster over several issues in the near future, including copyright infringement, falling short in preventing content piracy, and unfair competition. The suit is naming damages at close to $217 million total against the two video sharing websites for pirated copies of the broadcaster's licensed content. TF1's complaint against YouTube involves, among other things, the amount of downloading of Heroes episodes and a French comedian's performance that occurred and the revenue lost as a result. Dailymotion, TF1 contends, has rebroadcast the broadcaster's newscasts on a regular basis, according to Le Point. Following an alliance between Nibras Media and Tanweer Group, the Eurovision Song Contest will be localized for the Middle Eastern market in the Mideast-North Africa region. The two companies bought the format from the European Broadcasting Union. Did you know that the original contest debuted in 1956? On February 11, 2008, the Canadian Radio-televisions and Telecommunications Commission will sit down to hold a public hearing from both Vancouver's HDTV Networks and YES TV to license Canada's first free high-def channel. YES TV proposes a Toronto-based, English-language network with 126 hours of programming of which 50% would be Canadian-produced content. Its plans include a local daily news program while HDTV Networks is looking to air a Vancouver-based national show with local input. The latter's network, if accepted would be picked up by audiences on over-the-air transmitters in the following areas: Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, and Winnipeg. Teshkeel Media Group, KSC, the Kuwait-based publisher of comics and other kid's entertainment, teams with Cartoon Network to publish Arabic and English-language versions of Cartoon Network Magazine in the Middle East and North Africa (aka the MENA region). Under the partnership, Teshkeel will publish 9 issues (32-pages each) of the magazine every year, each of which will feature comics based on the network's properties, puzzles, games, and give-a-ways. Targeted to kids 6-12, Teshkeel distributed its first issue of the magazine across MENA in November 2007.
