INTERNATIONAL MARKET: BBC Worldwide may be in the market to acquire the remaining 50% stake in the U.K.'s 9-channel UKTV that it does not already own from Virgin Media. Although no official talks or financials have been thrown about yet, Virgin Media's share of the 10-year old pay TV channel provider is estimated at $740 million, which includes a $300 million loan. Argentina's CNDC anti-trust organization approved the merger of Argentinean-based Grupo Clarin's Multicanal and U.S. investment group Fintech Advisory's Cablevision. The $1.1 billion share swap merger agreement for the two local cable TV operators was originally signed in October 2006 with Grupo Clarin owning 60%. The two operators will continue to operate as separate brands. CNDC did put in a condition that the merged company invests in service quality improvements with the company reportedly planning on putting in $500 million over the next 2 years for fiber optic cable infrastructures. Another stipend is low priced packages for lower income households. The merger deal also covers Grupo Clarin's Prima and Teledigital, Multicanal's FiberTel, and Cablevision's Ciudad Internet. EuroNews will launch its 8th language feed in 2008. The channel won the bid to both produce and air an Arabic-language, EU-backed channel through its 35 satellites. Its other languages include English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. In the U.K., Channel 4 has officially launched its new Channel 4 HD channel on Sky, making it the 14th high-def channel offered on the platform. It will feature a range of programming, including Hollyoaks from spring 2008. It is available to current Sky HD subscribers without an additional subscription. It looks as if ESPN is ready to fight for the chance to grab the U.K. rights to the English Premier League when they go up for auction in 2009. The U.K.'s BSkyB, the current rights holder, paid $2.6 billion as part of a 3-year agreement which includes the majority of live soccer rights. In other international ESPN news, ESPN Star Sports (ESS) launched Star Sports Mobile. The mobile sports content service has Arsenal and Liverpool Football Club content as well as other features such as match highlights, video clips, and player interviews. It will also include content from ESS shows such as Engine Block, Game, and Top Corner. Granada International has picked up the international distribution rights, excluding the U.S., to VH1's Old Skool With Terry & Gita. The 5-episode, Bunim/Murray-produced entertainment series is set to air in the U.S. in 2008 as a 30-minute show from a septuagenarian point of view with Terry Moore and Gita Hall, per C21.
