It's Wednesday, December 5, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. signed a multi-year interactive program guide (IPG) agreement with Changzhou Broadcast & Television Information Network Co. Ltd., (CZCATV). As part of the deal, the cable operator based in China's Jiangsu can incorporate Gemstar-TV Guide's IPG products and services into set top boxes for its digital cable television subscriber base. Ching Hai Technology, a Shanghai-based digital software and hardware distributor, will work directly with CZCATV to handle client management, data collection, technical support and integration of the IPG. BKN's Spanish subsidiary, BKN New Media SL, signed a 1.3 million Euro deal with Cartoon One S.r.l. in Italy for the co-production of the 52-episode Stone Age with BKN's London and Barcelona studios. In return for the Italian rights and profit sharing of the 11-minute show, Cartoon will pay 25% of the production budget. Through a new deal with China Intercontinental Communications Center (CICC), National Geographic Digital Media (NGDM) will gain the first-time use and licensing rights to 1,300 programming hours and close to 3,000 hours of archival footage from China. NGDM will license the CICC footage internationally. ALL3MEDIA International inked sales deals with Sweden's TV4 for 3-episode, 60-minute Torn, 6x60 Honest drama, 120-minute Premier League Allstars, Bondi Rescue factual series, and the 3x52 Transforming Keegan documentary. TV Norge took Torn as well while TV2 Norway acquired another Hollyoaks season and 3 seasons of 5th Gear while Germany-based Bertelsmann AG is looking into acquiring the 10.2% of RTL Group that it does not own at a reported 82 Euros per share. RTL runs 42 TV channels and 32 radio stations in Europe. European animation house Cosgrove Hall Films signed a licensing agreement deal for its new 10-episode animation, Eddie Retractorhead, with Nickelodeon UK. The 1-minute interstitials will debut next year exclusively on the network. Corus Entertainment's Movie Central (western Canada) and Astral Media's The Movie Network (eastern Canada) will debut the fifth and final season of HBO's The Wire on January 6, 2008, at 8p and 9p, respectively. HISPANIC MARKET: CaribeVision Holdings completed its purchase of its broadcast stations in New York, Miami, and Puerto Rico. The deal worth over $60 million involves New York's WPXO from Paxson Communications, Miami's WFUN from Localone Texas, Ltd., San Juan's WJPX, Jayuya's WIRS, Ponce's WKPV, and Aguada's WJWN in Puerto Rico. CaribeVision's lineup initially consists of English-subtitled telenovelas, talk shows, comedy, drama, sports, movies, news, children's shows, and special events with 70% acquired content and 30% original programming. MTV Tr3s announced the nominees for The 1st Annual Mi TRL Awards, set to air on December 15 at 3p. Hosted by Mi TRL VJ Carlos Santos and Karlifornia's Karli Henriquez, the event will include a live performance by Mexico's RBD. One MTV Tr3s viewer, selected by answers to why they are the ultimate Mi TRL viewer, will be named the winner of the Pepsi Mi TRL Awards Viewers Choice Award Casting Call Challenge and will co-present the Mi TRL Pepsi Viewers Choice Award. The results for the November NTI and NSI survey period for Telemundo are in. According to Nielsen Media Research data, the network averaged 530,000 A18-49 in primetime, increasing +16% over November 2006. LATAM MARKET: MTV Networks Argentina is relocating its operational headquarters to a 3,000 square meter office with an art production studio in Buenos Aires' Palermo Soho district as part of MTV Networks Latin America's regionalization strategy. The plans include the addition of 120 new employees to its local operations this year. GAY/LESBIAN MARKET: Logo will premiere the indie comedy, Puccini for Beginners, on December 9 at 10p as part of Logo Films: 2007 Fall Film Festival's final installment. EXECUTIVE MOVES: Telemundo appointed Borja Perez as Yahoo! Telemundo Alliance Leader, in addition to his current post as VP/Market Development, Digital Media.
