It's Monday, December 3, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: It looks like the U.K.'s Shine is about to finalize its acquisition of the U.S.'s Reveille for a reported $200 million. Reveille has produced TV shows such as The Office, The Tudors, The Biggest Loser, and Ugly Betty, to name a few as well as titles under its Reveille Motion Pictures. Singapore's SingTel has launched Germany's Deutsche Welle on its mio TV IPTV platform lineup while the Philippines' GMA Pinoy TV will be added on December 15. Both multi-genre channels will be streamed via satellite in German and English/Tagalog, respectively. New Zealand's Weta Productions and the U.K.'s Chapman Entertainment have decided to co-develop kids content for television with the first piece of work to be a boys 6-9-targeted animated comedy. Plans call for 2D and CGI animated content to be developed by Weta's Martin Baynton and Richard Taylor and Chapman Entertainment's Keith Chapman. BBC Worldwide inked several deals following the Asia TV Forum, including one with Fox International Channels. The deal covers programming for its upcoming Fox Life and FX channels in South Korea. The former took The Office and Extras for a January debut while FX has Top Gear. Fox channel in Korea acquired Doctor Who's (new version) second season as a second-window agreement, according to C21. BBC Worldwide also inked a 3-year output agreement with Taiwan's Chungwa Telecom for 100+ hours of programming for its new IPTV VOD service launching in the beginning of next year. Its linear networks, PTS, Hollywood Movies, YoYo TV, and Momo TV, are also going home with BBC fare. NBC Universal completed its purchase of Sparrowhawk Holdings from Providence Equity Partners, 3i and management shareholders which includes international pay TV channels and the non-U.S. Hallmark Channels. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. This deal gives NBCU all 18 feeds of the international Hallmark Channels which air across 152 territories and 60 million subscribers. Additionally, NBCU now controls Movies 24, a made-for-TV movie channel in the U.K.; the new U.K. female-targeted lifestyle and general entertainment channel, Diva TV; and Sparrowhawk's stake in the KidsCo joint venture, as well as a broadcast facility in Denver and the international distribution rights to nearly 600 titles in the Sparrowhawk International Library which was formerly the Crown Media/Hallmark Library. Sparrowhawk's international operations will merge into NBCU's Global Networks unit that now manages more than 30 channels in total with plans to expand to more than 50 channels in the next 2-3 years. NBCU's Global Networks division is led by Roma Khanna, President/Global Networks and Digital Initiatives. The Sparrowhawk International Library will be rolled into NBCU's television sales division managed by Belinda Menendez, President/NBC Universal International Television Distribution, while the Denver broadcast facility will be a part of NBCU's Media Works unit supervised by John Eck, President/NBC TV Network and Media Works. Studio B Productions inked deals with Canadian educational TV networks Knowledge Network and SCN for the animated short Clancy With The Puck. Both broadcasters began airing the short in high rotation this past weekend. The hardcover book with a DVD was just released in the U.S. and Canada by Raincoast Books. Pilot Productions inked global deals for its travel programming, including the pre-sale of the 6-episode, 30-minute Metropolis to Spain's Viajar and Hong Kong's ATV. The latter also took Globe Trekker's season 13 and the 13-episode World Cafe Asia. Israel's IBA acquired Globe Trekker's season 9-12 and Poland's Telewizja Puls took 11 and 12, according to World Screen. Greece's ERT has Treks in a Wild World, Pilot Globe Guides, Globe Trekker Specials, and Bazaar. HISPANIC MARKET: Entravision Communications Corporation signed on to acquire Spanish-language, Orlando-based FM radio station WNUE from Mega Communications. Entravision took over the station this weekend for an estimated $24 million price tag. It already owns and operates several other TV stations in the area, including Univision affiliate WVEN and Telefutura affiliate WOTF. KyLinTV's IPTV platform will air STAR Chinese Channel, a Taiwanese entertainment channel, as part of its premium package with talk and game shows, contemporary and costume drama series, lifestyle, and variety shows. In the next few months, Taiwanese music network Channel [V] Taiwan and another classic Chinese film channel will be added. EXECUTIVE MOVES: Twentieth Century Fox named Grant Kahn as VP/International Licensing. He will be responsible for licensing and merchandising in the Asia-Pacific region.
