It's Tuesday, November 20, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: The BBC Trust has given its nod of approval to the BBC's proposed free-to-air BBC HD channel. The high-def service has been in test mode for the last year and a half on both satellite and cable. With the final approval granted, BBC HD will expand the amount of hours and content in addition to being launched on Freeview and the Freesat in the near future. Nine hours of programming will air with BBC high-def by the end of 2008 with a fifth of the content covering movies and sports. BBC HD's broadcast hours will not be borrowed air space from BBC Four, BBC Parliament, or other BBC channels. BBC Trust will review the channel again next year. London-based Programs4Media's Programs4Media has re-inked its repping agreement with Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution for another two years from November 1 covering English-speaking sub-Saharan African distribution. The licensing deal excludes South African rights and includes movies, made-for-TV movies, television series, and the U.S. versions of reality series. China's ring tone company Hurray! Holding has merged with entertainment content producer and distributor Enlight Media in a deal estimated at $160 million. Hurray Enlight Media Group will be the new name but the company will keep its Hurray NASDAQ listing. Hurray runs the Huayi Brothers Music, Freeland Digital Music, New Run Entertainment, and Secular Bird record labels. Enlight produces entertainment news, fashion, music, and reality programming as well as film and TV drama distribution this year. Wang Changtian, Enlight's CEO, will be the new CEO and chairman of Hurray Enlight Media Group while Hurray's President and CFO, Sean Wang, was named as Co-President and CFO. Enlight's VP, Xiaoping Li, will be Co-President as well. Cake Distribution has licensed comedy action series Skunk Fu! to Cartoon Network Europe for its EMEA Channels. Past deals for the series have been inked with the BBC, Super RTL, Canal J, France 5, RTBF, SVT, NRK, S4C, TG4, and RAISAT. Videofashion Network has named Library Media Solutions to work on its Inflight Entertainment business account. The 30-year old Videofashion Network has 13 fashion, beauty, and lifestyle programming series. Australia's SBS picked up the honors will be the first global broadcaster outside of the U.K. to re-version the BBC's Top Gear entertainment show. BBC Worldwide's Australia/Asian production partner, Freehand Productions, will produce the down under version in time for a 2008 debut. EXECUTIVE MOVES: BBC Worldwide Americas named Andrew Jackson to be SVP/Marketing from VP/Marketing for BBC America. Based in Gotham, he will oversee the company's U.S. brands. Andrew will report to Chris Carr, BBC Worldwide's COO/Channels. In other BBC exec news, Karen O'Connor will be pulled in as Head/London Factual as of January 2008. In this newly created position, she will manage content development on all platforms. Karen is presently BBC News & Current Affairs' Acting Commissioning Editor. Oliver Schablitzki has been named to replace Markus Andorfer as MTV Networks Germany's SVP of Nickelodeon and Comedy Central under the new title of MD. Oliver was previously Nick's Director/Channel and Program Management. In addition, MTV Networks' SVP/MTV and Viva, Elmar Giglinger, will be upped to Head/Comedy Central. Markus will step down by the end of 2007 for personal reasons. In his 3 years at the company, he was responsible for Nick and Comedy Central's launch.
