INTERNATIONAL MARKET: As of November 19, MSNBC will begin distribution in Southern Africa on Free2View TV as its exclusive news provider. It is Southern Africa's only free-to-air satellite television platform. MSNBC Africa, a joint venture between Great Media Limited and MSNBC, will deliver breaking news, documentaries, current event discussions, and Southern Africa weather forecasts from Weather Plus. MSNBC's 4p-12a programming will air in a block, broadcast live for the first airing and then repeated later in the day. The Africa Channel inked a national affiliation agreement with Time Warner Cable, providing the channel with the distribution possibility of an additional 13 million U.S. households. Spain's La Sexta terrestrial broadcaster signed a deal with Disney-ABC International Television for CW's Reaper comedy and ABC Family's Greek, according to Variety. Over 80 hours of National Geographic and Discovery content is being added to Virgin Media's digital cable VOD service with the former making its first appearances last week. Discovery content will be brought in soon. November 28 will be the day that screenwriters around the world will participate in an international day of solidarity in recognition of the WGA strike. Writers in Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Ireland, Mexico, and New Zealand have signed on to participate so far. The news comes out of the International Affiliation of Writers Guilds' annual meeting yesterday in Montreal. U.S.-based broadband video site www.heavy.com is reportedly about to open a U.K.-based unit and exploring potential U.K. managing directors to head up the new office for next year. The A18-34, male-targeted site is also looking into launching European, Canadian, and Australian local operations. Soft launches have already occurred in the latter two. Hong Kong and Taiwan may also be in the works to target the Chinese-language market, per C21 Media. San Diego-based DivX, Inc. acquired German video technology company MainConcept AG in a stock and cash deal for close to $22 million. Additional payments of up to $6 million may be made if MainConcept reaches specific product development and financial goals next year. INDIAN/ASIAN MARKET: ImaginAsian Entertainment will debut its new The ImaginAsian Center on December 7 in downtown LA. The ImaginAsian Center, partnering with Cinema Properties Group, will bring in to first-run Asian and Asian American films, opening with the Japanese film, Midnight Eagle. The ImaginAsian Center location was previously home to a number of theaters, including the Arrow, the Aztec, and most recently the Japanese-language film theater, Linda Lea.
