Good morning.  It's Thursday, November 15, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. 

Heads up!  Today's

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

CNN Worldwide is expanding both staff and resources in what is probably the network's biggest increase in 27 years.  The CNN bureau in the United Arab Emirates will be expanded beyond its current CNN.com Arabic operations. A London digital production division, Hong Kong and CNN en Espanol (Mexico City and Atlanta) staff increases are also in the plans.  Both CNN's International Newsource and wire businesses will get an influx of investments.  The Time Warner Inc. unit will bring in 15-16 additional correspondents in Johannesburg, London, Mexico City, and Istanbul in addition to more staff in Hong Kong, Beijing, Jakarta, and Pakistan.  Future plans point towards adding more news operations folks in Afghanistan, Belgium, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Nigeria, the Philippines, Poland, and Vietnam.  CNN's current correspondent staff is around 150.  Many of the changes are expected to occur in the beginning of 2008.

CABLEready picked up the international distribution rights to distribute the new high-def 30-minute Epic Conditions series from The Weather Channel. The 15-episode show documents those fleeting moments when weather cooperates allowing for the best experiences in outdoor adventures.

Soccer network GolTV inked an exclusive agreement to broadcast all of the matches of The Italian Cup for 2007-2008, 2008-2009, and 2009-2010 editions. This season's matches will begin airing in the beginning of December with the final match happening on May 24, 2008.

CROSS-MARKET:

Access Licensing Group (ALG), a new, LA-based brand management and licensing agency, officially launched yesterday. ALG will work primarily with sports, lifestyle and entertainment brands in North America. More news on U.S. and Canadian deals will come in the next few weeks.

As part of its multi-network and multi-platform coverage of the Adidas MLS Cup 2007, ABC will air programming on ABC, ESPN, ESPNEWS, ESPN2, ESPN International, ESPN Deportes,
www.ESPNSoccernet.com , and ESPN Classic.  ESPN International will televise the 2007 MLS Cup in 102 countries via ESPN Dos, ESPN Atlantic, ESPN Latin Caribbean, and ESPN Pac-Rim networks. In addition, the Adidas MLS Cup 2007 will be carried by 15 international broadcasters reaching 47 countries (25 in Europe, 20 in the Middle East, and two in Asia).  ESPNEWS programming will feature news and highlights on SportsCenter and ESPN Deportes SportsCenter.

The Gospel Music Channel (GMC) will celebrate Thanksgiving with an all-day Faith & Fame Marathon beginning at 7a.  The GMC original series marathon will include profiles of 17 artists throughout the day.  Thanksgiving night, GMC will air a Hometown Gospel Mini-Marathon starting at 8p.

HISPANIC MARKET:

MTV Networks launched a new mobile social network with Intercasting Corp. targeting bi-cultural Hispanics.  Con3xion, positioned as an extension to the MTV Tr3s network, will utilize Intercasting's Anthem platform to allow users to view and post photos, messages, comments and profiles integrated with MTV Tr3s programming.

DIRECTV customers will now have access to the V-me Spanish-language network.  It will be available at no additional cost to DIRECTV and DIRECTV MAS customers on channel 440, bringing the network's current reach to over 36 million homes.

Speaking of V-me, the network is headlining its primetime schedule with two original programs, Viva Voz and Estudio Billboard.  Every Tuesday at 10p and Sunday at 8p, the Estudio Billboard music/interview format will be produced in collaboration with Billboard Magazine and hosted by Billboard's Leila Cobo. It airs with English-language closed captioning.  The 10p weeknight interview program Viva Voz is a forum for hosts, newsmakers, and celebs to cover issues from the Latino perspective.  On November 17 at 10p, V-me will debut its new Saturday series, Sesiones, with concerts taped live in Mexico City with Mexico's Rolling Stone and GQ contributor Alejandro Franco as host.  It showcases new, alternative and indie rock bands from Europe, Mexico, and the Americas.

ESPN Deportes will offer an exclusive live presentation of the Scotland vs. Italy EURO 2008 qualifier on November 17 at 1155a from Glasgow, Scotland. ESPN Deportes' lead soccer play-by-play commentator Fernando Palomo will call the match with analyst Mario Kempes.  In 2008, ESPN will provide exclusive coverage of all 31 matches of the quadrennial tournament set to take place June 7- June 29 from Austria, Switzerland.

A coalition of Latino organizations and Spanish-language media companies launched Ya es Hora, Ve y Vota! (It's Time, Go Vote!), a non-partisan national voter mobilization effort targeting U.S. Hispanics. It aims to significantly increase Latino voter registration and turnout in the 2008 presidential elections with a multi-media campaign encompassing grassroots, print, and broadcast. The coalition partners include Entravision Communications, ImpreMedia, Mi Familia Vota Educational Fund, the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Educational Fund, the National Council of La Raza, and Univision Communications Inc.  The coalition's campaign has been organized into two phases. Ya es Hora Ciudadania! is trying to help naturalize an estimated one million eligible legal permanent residents in 2007.  Now, the Ya es Hora Ve y Vota! is seeking to register and mobilize millions of Latinos in 2008.  More info on the toll-free bilingual hotline 1-888-Ve-Y-Vota or at

LATAM MARKET:

The premiere of Televisa's Dancing for a Dream's 1st. International Dancing Championship original production did quite well in Mexico, Ecuador, Paraguay, Panama, and Costa Rica. In Mexico, it scored a 24.1 rating and and 39.4% share on November 4. Elsewhere, it averaged 26.6/41 in Ecuador, a 29.4/47.7 in Paraguay, a 29.4/12.8 in Panama, and a 57.5 rating in Costa Rica.

AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:

In a multi-year programming deal, TV One has acquired rights from Disney/ABC Domestic Television to air movies and including The PJs, Day Break, Where I Live.  The programming package also includes The Walt Disney Studios theatrical titles from Walt Disney Pictures, Miramax Films, Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures, and Miramax Films.  TV One will begin airing some of the programs this fall with The PJs being the first to hit the airwaves this month.

HDNet will carry the Iowa Brown & Black Democratic Presidential Forum live nationally on December 1. It will be moderated by NPR's Michele Norris and Ray Suarez of PBS's The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer as well as analysis from Dan Rather, Global Correspondent for HDNet's Dan Rather Reports.  The Forum will ask questions encompassing concerns of African Americans and Hispanic Americans with all eight Democratic presidential candidates participating.

here! will team with the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and Television Cares for the second year in a row to tape and broadcast the 11th Annual Ribbon of Hope Celebration.  It will take place on December 1 with here! taping the event live and then edited for later broadcast and offered free of charge to here!'s cable and satellite households and on here! Video.

Logo produced its first scripted online show Big Straight Sketch Show available now only on
www.Logoonline.com at www.logoonline.com/shows/dyn/big_straight_sketch_show/videos.jhtml .  It's mockumentary-style show within a show parodying the straight life of a Logo programming exec. The 8x4.5 series is timed with the DVD release of season one of the linear Big Gay Sketch Show this week.

In other Logo news, the network will air the world television premiere of Loving Annabelle on November 25 at 10p with only one commercial interruption.  The Katherine Brooks-directed film, based on the 1931 lesbian drama Madchen in Uniform, is about a 17-year old Catholic schoolgirl who falls in love with her poetry teacher.

EXECUTIVE MOVES:

Mike Rodriguez, previously VP and GM of Telemundo's WSCV Miami station, has been upped to SVP/Sales for Telemundo, effective immediately. He takes over for Steve Mandala, who was recently named as EVP/Cable Ad Sales for NBC Universal. Mike will oversee sales and marketing for the Telemundo network, mun2, and their digital properties.  He will report to Mike Pilot, NBC Universal's President/Sales and Marketing.

MTV Networks Argentina named Juan Frontini as MTV Latin America's Creative Director. Based in Buenos Aires, he will report to Sean Saylor, VP/Creative for MTV and VH1 Latin America.  He will be responsible imaging and promotional initiatives throughout Latin America.
