It's Thursday, November 8, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Following up on the first announcement back in May, Viacom Inc. and Indian company Network18's Global Broadcast News unit have launched their joint venture in India. Viacom 18 Media Private Limited includes television, movie, digital media content, and consumer products. It will operate the local MTV, VH1, and Nickelodeon India. The first order of business in India will be a Hindi-language general entertainment channel in the beginning of 2008 with original, local programming and MTV Networks acquisitions and content. As for future plans, the venture will bring out MTV Networks niche channels, syndicated MTVN content, and new brands and digital content to the Indian market BabyFirstTV, a 24/7 commercial-free educational and child development channel, has launched in Central America and the Caribbean through carriage agreements with Panama's CTV Telecom and Columbus Communications Trinidad. It is available in English and Spanish with CTV taking the feed in Spanish and Columbus offering it in English. BabyFirstTV is already distributed in the U.S. and Mexico (Sky Mexico, Cablevision, and PCTV), Puerto Rico (Onelink), Canada (Rogers Cable and Bell ExpressVu), France (Canal Sat), the U.K. (BSkyB), Korea (Korea Telecom, Hanaro), Taiwan (ChungHwa MOD), and the Middle East (Showtime Arabia). Peace Arch Entertainment Group Inc. signed with Genius Products Inc. for all North American distribution rights to the feature film Goal II: Living the Dream. Genius will handle U.S. DVD rights while Peace Arch will release the film theatrically in the U.S. and Canada on 250 screens in the spring of 2008 and will handle all other rights. In a separate agreement, Genius acquired exclusive U.S. DVD distribution rights to Peace Arch's Chapter 27, Delirious, and Watching the Detectives. Peace Arch is theatrically releasing all three titles in the U.S. The 2007 MTV Style Gala will air internationally in December as a collaboration between MTV Networks China, Shanghai Media Group (SMG), and China's CCTV 6 state broadcaster. The November 23 event will welcome special guest Paris Hilton with MTV VJ hosts and SMG and CCTV 6 presenters. The show will be broadcast on MTV China, CCTV 6, and SMG's OTV. Both seasons of TV-Loonland's preschool series, Little Princess (65x11), have been picked up by Cartoon Network Spain and Canada's TV Ontario. Broadcasters taking the second season include France's Canal J and France 5 as well as ABC Australia, Minimax Poland, and RUV Iceland. Little Princess is set to bow in Italy on RAI TRE soon. Discovery Networks in Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) is partnering with Russian media seller Video International Group (VIG). VIG will be the exclusive representative for Discovery Channel's ad sales in the country as of December. Newsweek International editor Fareed Zakaria has been pulled in by CNN to host a new 60-minute weekly international affairs program set to launch in 1Q2008. The show, which sits down with journalists and commentators from around the globe, is scheduled to be a weekend program airing on the U.S.' CNN and CNN International. Fareed will continue to manage Newsweek's international editions and pen his foreign affairs column from his New York base. Following a deal between Schramm Sports & Entertainment and IMG World, the latter will offer both English- and Spanish-language content from FC Barcelona on syndicated television, broadband, VOD, and mobile phones in the U.S. The Barca TV international feed will be available as of 1Q2008 with 6 hours of new content each week on cable TV VOD and online video, including recent soccer matches, interviews, updates, and highlights. Global Sports Partner will be in charge of distribution and sponsorships, according to Multichannel News. HISPANIC MARKET: Interep's recently created Hispanic Independent Television Sales rep firm signed its first client, Pappas Telecasting Companies' Spanish-language television network TuVision. LATV Networks inked an agreement with Over-Man Productions for the comedic animated series Caesar and Chuy. It debuts today at 930p as the second animated series in LATV's original programming block. Caesar and Chuy are animated rockers and music video critics that comment on people and music from their rather cheeky point of view. Over-Man Productions teamed up with Artistic Warfare and Alfonso Arney Designs to produce the series. Galavision's debut of Vida Salvaje, which debuted November 4 at 8p, was the biggest primetime premiere in its history. It delivered 200,000 A18-49 viewers according to Nielsen Media Research's NHI ratings, an increase for the time period audience of +39% (NHHI/NHI Nielsen Media Research - 7/2/1996-11/04/07 primetime).
