Good morning.  It's Wednesday, November 7, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. 

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

OpenTV Corp. signed a deal with India's Sun Direct TV to supply an end-to-end solution and deployment management for its digital television services as well as to provide Sun Direct TV with applications (electronic program guide, interactive cricket, and interactive news).  Sun Direct TV will introduce a new Digital Direct-to-Home pay TV network in India with Sun Direct TV's launch to be supported by Irdeto's conditional access solution.

In addition to numerous theatrical distribution agreements, Canada's Peace Arch Entertainment Group Inc. completed distribution agreements for television and DVD rights on one mini-series and 18 films. Lusomondo in Portugal acquired DVD and TV rights to the Guns miniseries and five films, including All The Good Ones Are Married, Grindstone Road, The Four Horsemen, The Lobster Tale, and The Last Hit Man. HBO Latin America took the pay TV rights to three feature films, Chapter 27, Delirious, and Guantanamero.  Inter Medya Hizmetleri Ticaret Ltd. picked up the DVD and TV rights to the Guns miniseries and TV rights for 13 films.

France's Breakout Films is working with Muse Entertainment on a new series, Dad's In The Attic, in association with France 2 and Canada's YLE.  The 26x26m K11-16-targeted live action show about a family where dad begins working from home will start filming in March as a French-Canadian joint venture, according to C21. ContentFilm's Fireworks International will be in charge of international distribution.  Breakout is also working with another Canadian company, Sienna Films, on the 2x90 Rough miniseries.

National Geographic Channel will co-produce drama Kheops Revealed with France's Gedeon Programmes. The documentary is about French architect Jean-Pierre Houdin's new theory that the Egyptian pyramids may have been built from the inside out.  Other Gedeon deals with National Geographic include the National Geographic Channel US' pre-sale pickup of the 52-minute Arte-produced documentaries, The Mummy That Came From The Cold and Wild West Uncovered, according to C21.  Nat Geo's Adventure One also took the Cooking The World series (8x52).

EBS World Entertainment is all set to start up a new North American video division on January 1, 2008 with a domestic and international independent film specialization.  It is expecting to release close to 40 movies annually with a theatrical, made-for-TV, and straight-to-DVD product mix, according to C21

FremantleMedia Enterprises and talkbackTHAMES joined forces to launch The Bill on YouTube (
www.youtube.com/thebill ).The new site features upcoming episode sneak previews, guest stars, and more such as the Interactive Incident Room (linked from the main The Bill www.itv.com/thebill site.  The launch is timed to coincide with the upcoming 3-part The Bill special, Moving Target, debuting from November 14.

HISPANIC MARKET:

In recognition of the creativity and vitality of the Hispanic advertising industry, V-me's primetime original primetime program, Viva Voz, will spotlight the Hispanic advertising industry today at 10p.  Shot on location at the Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies conference in New York with host Juan Manuel Benitez, the show will touch base with national advertisers and industry leaders.

mun2 is handing over the remote to its fans starting next week by enabling them to program an entire week of on-air content via an interactive polling system at
www.holamun2.com .  Kicking off today for a month, fans can vote for their favorite mun2 moments of 2007. The top picks will appear into the mun2 Bleepin' Best of '07, including close to 60 hours of programming airing from December 24 to December 31.

Total ad spending in Spanish-language media for the first half of 2007 reached $2.87 billion, reporting a 2.3% increase over the same time period last year, according to Nielsen Monitor-Plus. Spanish-Language Network TV came up 0.2% to $1.53 billion while Spot TV went up by 0.6% to $763 million, Spot Radio by 1.2% to $349 million, National Magazine by 14.3% to $72.7 million (ESPN Deportes added in 2007), and Local Newspaper came down by -0.4% to $52.3 million. Spanish-language Cable TV went up by the most with a 75.3% jump from $59.5 million to $104.3 million (Fox Sports en Espanol added in 2007).  Spanish-language Cable TV and National Magazine showed particularly large gains due to increases in media measurement.  With $105.8 million, Broadcast Media Partners Inc. (Univision Communications Inc.'s parent), is the largest advertiser across all Spanish-language media. However, non Spanish-language media companies comprise the remainder of the top 10 advertisers for the first half of 2007. Three automakers are in the Top 10, representing a total spending of $146.4 million targeted towards Spanish-language media in the first half of this year.  Spending for the top 10 categories on Spanish-language media reached over $1.1 billion for the first six months of this year. The Automotive category had the most spending at $316 million, more than double the dollar amount of the number two category, Wireless Telephone services at $140 million. Verizon ($36 million), AT&T ($33.1 million), and Sprint Nextel ($26.6 million) were the top three Wireless Telephone Service companies.

Univision Communications Inc. is partnering with the American Red Cross to help fundraising efforts for the victims of the recent disastrous weather that caused massive flooding in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Central America. The multiplatform effort will enlist Univision's national and local television and radio stations and online properties, featuring a Spanish-language toll-free phone number (1-800-842-2200) set up by the American Red Cross.

EXECUTIVE MOVES:

Spanish Broadcasting System named Joseph M. Cunningham as VP and GM.  Based in San Francisco, he will manage all operations of KRZZ LA Raza 93.3 FM.  Joseph was previously GM for Clear Channel Radio in San Francisco/San Jose. 

Mediacom Worldwide named William Ratcliffe as the Global Head/Consumer Insights and Receptivity, part of its Worldwide Functional Leadership Team. He was previously President of Millward Brown Canada.
