On Arts and Music In
Schools:
"Many politicians today want to cut Arts and Music from our
schools.
I say more power to 'em. Teaching kids to play the tuba is not
going to help our country's future."
Is this your
view?
It will be if you don't vote. In the last election 35 million women
didn't.

DIGITAL 11/07/07
Good morning, it's
Wednesday, November
7, 2007 and this is your first
early morning digital briefing.
Facebook unveiled its new behavioral ad system in a splashy
presentation in New York, presided over by company founder and CEO Mark
Zuckerberg. The "Facebook Ads" system is built around the
concept of "trusted referrals". Advertisers can design custom
pages and custom applications using existing Facebook apps that Facebook
users can then choose to endorse. (Design features are free for
advertisers, but companies bid to attach them to news items and targeted
banner ads.) Ad messages are spread virally through the network as users
engage with each other or brands they are interested in – users share
their purchase decisions or reviews with their network of friends. More
than 60 major advertisers including CBS, Coke, Sony Pictures Television
and new investment partner Microsoft signed up to participate in the
launch.
~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
ESPN formed a relationship with Ebay's online ticket marketplace
StubHub integrating the sites
branding, links and promotions across ESPN.com. A custom StubHub ticket
center will appear on every major sports index page.
Rolling Stone has finally plugged in with its first cover-to-cover
digital edition to celebrate its 40th Anniversary. To navigate simply
click to flip from page to page, similar to the page view function on
Amazon.
Accuweather.com launched a new
forecast tool that integrates with Google Maps providing
forecasts, current conditions and satellite images by ZIP code, city or
country search.
It's that time of year again -- or that time every few years again --
when Cynopsis conducts a quick 5-question survey to find out what
you think about and use this daily, how you'd like to see it
improved. Honestly, this will take less than 30 seconds, it's
completely anonymous. and we'd really appreciate your input.

Weekender College Edition
returns on November 15th! Deadline for college student

be sent to me at
, subject
Weekender College Edition. Top 4 essays are published in Weekender
on Nov 15th, and authors are paid $350 each. Students - be sure to
include your name, age, college, college year, and major (if you know
it), and how you can be contacted.
And here's something else -- all students submitting essays can also
submit (free!) their Situation Wanted ad which will run in
all editions for one week beginning Nov 15, and the first ten Video
Resumes submitted will run on the

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
FremantleMedia Enterprises and talkbackTHAMES joined forces
to launch The Bill channel
on YouTube. The new site features upcoming episode sneak previews,
guest stars and more such as the Interactive Incident Room (linked from
the main The Bill site.)
The launch is timed to coincide with the upcoming 3-part The Bill
special, Moving Target, debuting from November 14.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS,
MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
CinemaNow and Sonic Solutions signed a licensing agreement
allowing CinemaNow users to legally burn encrypted movies and TV shows
onto a recordable DVD for playback. The deal will also make the CinemaNow
library, including 20th Century Fox, Disney, MGM, Sony and Warner Bros
titles, available within Sonic's Roxio Venue movie download application
being offered to PC manufactures.
Akami Technologies and participation media services provider
Telescope unveiled a new interactive voting platform allowing
viewers to interact with a TV show via the web, mobile devices or
landline voice messages. Fox's On the Lot used the platform this summer
to tally votes for filmmakers' entries.
ITV application creator BIAP announced it has been awarded with a
patent for the company's content retrieval and transcoding technology.
The system downloads Artificial Intelligence agents onto Scientific
Atlanta and Motorola set-top boxes that can retrieve and display data to
allow viewers to track such things as their fantasy football team's
performances.
~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
Gannett Co., Tribune Co., Hearst Corp., Media
News Group and Cox Newspapers are in talks to create a
national online ad network to provide "one-stop shopping" to
advertisers looking for wide reach on the net, reports The Chicago
Tribune. The consortium would both overlap and compete with a
newspaper network set up last year by Yahoo and would cover seven of the
top ten U.S. markets.
~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~
Newspaper circulation numbers trended downward again over the last six
months as readers defected to the internet, according to the latest
figures released by the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC). Total
weekday paid circulation declined at each of the nation's top 25 papers
except the LA Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer, which experienced
slight gains.
A
study conducted by researchers at the University of London for the
Canadian Government found that P2P downloading of music actually
increased CD sales as listeners used such services to sample albums
before they purchased them. File sharers bought an average of .44 more
CDs per year for every 12 songs they downloaded.
On the other hand, not all
Radiohead fans seem willing to
shell out for their music. Preliminary ComScore data shows 60% of
the users in the U.S. who downloaded their pay-what-you-may In Rainbows
album didn't pay a dime for the privilege. Those who paid spent an
average of $8 for the album (with international users paying only $4.64).
The average "freeload" and paid download revenue tallied out to
be $2.26 per album globally.
New series and seasons (full episodes only) released online since 30
October 2007:
Former Conde Nast Publications' MagNet executive Julie Hansen
joined CSTV Networks as SVP/CSTV Interactive. She will work
with CSTV Digital COO George Scott on CSTV.com, Fans Only and a soon to
launch NCAA site, reporting to Brian Bedol, President & CEO of
CSTV.
~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
Akamai Technologies' TheHDWeb
portal is up and running with content from Apple, BBC, CBS, the NBA, MTV
Networks and Gannet. It runs on Akamai's EdgePlatform, a network of more
than 25,000 servers deployed in 69 countries around the world. The video
looks impressive if you have a fat enough pipe and a fast enough
processor to view it. The site recommends a minimum of 7.5 mbps download
speed and a 2.4 Ghz processor (for 720 p video.) For 1080p video with 5.1
surround sound, the requirements are even more robust.
