Good Morning.  It's Tuesday, October 9, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. 

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

The History Channel UK, a joint venture between A&E Television Networks and British Sky Broadcasting, signed an agreement to distribute The History Channel HD to Scandinavia beginning December 13, 2007.  At launch, it will be available on Canal Digital in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) inked a 4-year partnership with Nelvana Enterprises for the exclusive rights to distribute some of Nelvana's portfolio of kids' programming in the U.K. and Ireland on DVD. It will allow FME to further develop its kids' home entertainment brands in the U.K.  FME will start off with Grossology (26x22), Di-Gata Defenders (52x22), and Jane and the Dragon (26x22).

Animal Planet International (API) will rollout a programming slate focused on celebrating and protecting the natural world this Fall in over 200 million homes across the U.K., Europe, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa.
  • Animals Save the Plane is a series of ten short clay animation films (20-40 seconds) on how to live a greener lifestyle produced with Aardman Animations for a late 2007 premiere
  • Crime Scene Wild is a 6x60 series about the illegal wildlife trade from Cicada Productions for 4Q2007
  • Going Ape is a continuing series on efforts to protect West Africa's endangered primate debuting in 2008 and produced by Tigress Productions
  • Ocean Voyagers is a 70-minute, high-def documentary about the humpback whale produced by Off the Fence and Feodor Pitcairn Productions in association with API for a December 2007 debut

SCI FI Channel has greenlit Ghost Hunters International, following the adventures of a new team of skeptical paranormal investigators as traveling in Europe. The show will debut on SCI FI in January 2008 and is produced in association with Pilgrim Films and Television.

Canadian-based 9 Story Entertainment signed a development deal with wilderness survivor expert and filmmaker, Les Stroud, to jointly develop a live-action series for kids based on his Discovery Channel's reality series Survivorman. Co-produced with Survivorman Productions, the show will adapt the original show's science, biology, geology, and creativity themes for children.

The U.K.'s Wall to Wall indie production house completed two pre-MIP deals for Biker Gangs (2x60) with Five in the U.K. and Against All Odds (6x60) with Prime in New Zealand. The first is a co production with National Geographic US and Discovery Channel Canada while the second is with National Geographic US and History Television Canada.

The 35th International Emmy Awards nominations were announced late last week by The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences with 38 nominees from 16 countries in 9 categories. Winners will be announced on November 19 in New York in addition to two special awards going to Al Gore for Current TV and Chairman Patrick Le Lay for TF1.  Brazil leads with 7 nominations, followed by 4 for Japan, and 3 for South Africa.

MIPCOM 2007 NEWS:

Disney-ABC International Television and Kamera, an Internet/mobile TV aggregator, have closed an agreement to distribute news video content from ABC News on via mobile operators and online platforms worldwide, excluding North America.  Content included in the deal covers ABC News On Demand clips, ABC News service ABC NewsOne, and clips from ABC's Good Morning America show.  Kamera will also offer localized versions.

National Geographic Channels International (NGCI), Off the Fence, and the Media Development Authority of Singapore signed a partnership initiative to commission fifteen 60-minute original documentary programs in high-def to encourage Singaporean filmmaking over the next three years. The shows will premiere on NGCI to 190 million homes in 165 countries while Off the Fence retains all rights in Germany, France, and U.S. in addition to handling international distribution.

Disney-ABC International Television also inked a digital media deal to license a selection of movies to Russia's set top box VOD service Sistema.  The films cover studios such as Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures and Miramax Films.  The company also licensed terrestrial TV rights to Kyle XY to the U.K.'s BBC

Been quite a busy few days for Disney-ABC International Television already!  The company also signed an agreement with basic cable channel Star Plus for Disney's Platinum animation titles, which will be localized and dubbed in Hindi for the Indian market. It will start with The Incredibles on October 14 on STAR Plus.

NonStop Television AB and VOOM HD Networks added another five affiliates to global VOOM HD channel's distribution. The new affiliates are Estonia's Levira DTT provider, Norway's GET operator, and Finland's SW Televisio/Welho, Tampereen Tietoverkko and Turun Kaapelitelevisio.

Bennett Media Worldwide closed a number of licensing deals, including …
  • HDNET (U.S.) acquired HDTV and HDDVD rights for Taylor Hicks: Whomp at the Warfield and six new episodes of Bikini Destinations.
  • VTR (Chile) secured pay TV rights for Bikini Destinations, Snowology, The Extremists, Destination X, Boost Mobile Snowboarding, and Billabong's J-Bay.
  • Imagen Satelital S.A. (Pan Latin America) took basic cable TV and direct to home rights for Mysteries.
  • ABS-CBN (Philippines) acquired pay TV rights for Flow, Bikini Life Adventures, Stag, Destination X, Bikini Destinations, and The Wild Side.
  • Tanweer Enlightenment Corporation (Middle East) bought first negotiation TV and VOD rights for Bennett Media's entire programming library.

CABLEready closed three deals with Scandinavia's NonStop Television acquiring The Fashion Team while broadcaster Zone Reality took six programs including Dominick Dunne's Power, Privilege and Justice, Paramedics, Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science, Shark Chasers, Women on Death Row, and the third season of Risk Takers. The deal covers Zone Reality's channel feeds in the U.K./Ireland, Latin America, Asia/Pacific, and Europe/Middle East/Africa. In addition, Spain's La Sexta renewed Forensic Files.

MTV Networks International is launching a new 40x30 internationally customized series produced by Comedy Central.  The Colbert Report Global Edition, compiled from the original series, will be internationally syndicated in addition to the 161x30 The Colbert Report.

New terrestrial TV deals for Disney Channel's Original Movie sequel High School Musical 2 cover licensing to free TV broadcasters, including the BBC in the U.K., RTI in Italy, ProSieben in Germany, M6 in France, RTE in Ireland, Channel 1 in Russia, and SABC South Africa. In the Asia-Pacific region, it was picked up by China's CCTV6, Australia's Channel 7, New Zealand's TVNZ, and Studio 23 in the Philippines.

PorchLight Entertainment's first sales from the market were made with Hell's Rain to TF1 (France), Sogecable (Spain), RTL2 (Germany), Art Port (Japan), Andrea Leone (Italy), TVP (Poland), D Productions (Turkey), RTL Klub (Hungary), Eagle and Orbit (Middle East), Star TV (Asia), and MPI (Romania).

Corus Entertainment Inc.'s Nelvana Enterprises is expanding its digital sell-through network following an agreement to sell its animated content through the online stores powered by HP Video Merchant Services.  It covers Nelvana's kids content library, including Beyblade, Braceface, Brian Jacques' Redwall, and Tales from the Cryptkeeper.

FremantleMedia Enterprises acquired the distribution, home entertainment and ancillary rights to the 26x30 Essence of Emeril show.  The company also bought 2008's The BRIT Awards (1x120) and The Classical BRIT Awards (1x60).

EXECUTIVE MOVES:

Peace Arch Entertainment Group Inc. named Larry Greenberg as SVP/Acquisitions to head up efforts to expand the company's film and television library.  Previously with Showtime Networks as VP/Acquisitions, he will now be based in LA and report to Berry Meyerowitz, Peace Arch Home Entertainment's President.

Laurent Dumeau has been pulled in as VP/Commercial and Network Development EMEA for NBC Universal's Global Networks division.  In this newly created role based in Paris, he will over new channel business development in new territories across EMEA. Laurent will report to Greg Matson, Global Networks' SVP/Commercial and Network Development.   He was previously with Universal Studios as CFO and Deputy Managing Director of the French speaking Channels.
