YouTube has officially gone global, announcing the roll out of nine
country-specific sites in Japan, the UK, France,
Spain, Brazil,
Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy
and Poland. The sites feature
locally-translated home pages, unique content and search tools which the company
hopes will spur the development of vibrant, culturally relevant communities in
each locale. YouTube also announced it was working on a Chinese version of the
site last week. Its parent company Google received preliminary
regulatory approval to offer new services in China, according to Dow Jones
report. Google has been working with locally-based Ganji.com and announced a
plan last week to partner with local web portal Sina Corp. on search services
and advertising. It also bought a stake in video and gaming download firm
Xuniei Network Technology earlier this year.
~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
The
Sony minisode network is up on MySpace with three mini
episodes of 15 classic series including Charlie's Angels, Who's The
Boss, Facts of Life and Starsky & Hutch. It's like
watching an hour-long drama with a finger on the Tivo's fast forward trigger.
The network aims to have more than 500 minis up by the end of the year.
Discovery signed a deal with Third
Screen Media to deliver Discovery-themed ads to mobile phones. The company
has used its MADX technology to manage and serve mobile ads for Deadliest
Catch and is planning to power 12-14 additional campaigns this year,
comprising of WAP-based banner ads, trailers and promotional content including
ringtones, wallpapers and mobisodes.
The AIM Tell-A-Vision Group (AIM TV) will launch a new video-on-the-web
network titled TheAmerican Latino
TV Network, developed in conjunction with Zeitbyte. The site will
include a library of over 1,000 produced "evergreen" segments and
hundreds of hours of never before seen footage. The network will promote
the show on its programs as well as with AIM TV's radio, print, online, and
event partners.
Fine Living is featuring user-generated travel tips on the special We
Live Here Uploaded, airing at 1 pm ET June 23. Visitors to the We Live Here
web page have contributed blog
entries, photos and videos of their favorite destinations and worst travel
nightmares.
As part of Dog Whisperer Week (July 9-13), National Geographic Channel
is conducting a poll on the show's website
asking viewers to vote for their favorite episodes. The top three vote-getters
will air back-to-back on July 13.
Facebook says it is attracting 1,000
developers a day building new tools for theopen source Facebook
Platform. New widgets include a video player developed bySplashCast
that allows users to watch the most recent Rocketboom
podcast. The Skype Me application allows friends to ping each other via
Skype.
McClatchy Company director and CEO of the Pittsburgh Pirates Kevin
McClatchy took a minority stake in adult social network Gather.com, joining entities such as Allen
& Co., Hearst, McGraw-Hill and the American Public Media Group.
Broadband Enterprises introduced a new video and transactional system
creating a virtual marketplace for publishers, advertisers and content
providers. The vComm platform is contextually
based, paring relevant video programming and ads with text-based stories and
resources. BE will provide websites with code that can be used to scan the
site's metadata for relevant video.
Social network Multiply topped the 5
million-user mark, generating over 1 million photo uploads, 13,000 video posts
and 28,000 blog entries daily. Multiply gives users a central site to post all
kinds of digital content and provides free software to enable users to start
blogs, schedule events/parties and share movie, TV and restaurant reviews.
Along the same idea, Houston-based HushLabs
(run by RackSpace founder Richard Yoo)
launched Natuba,
a service that aggregates users' personal web 2.0 pages in a single place.
Users can aggregate their MySpace profile, a blog at LiveJournal, photos on
Flickr, videos on YouTube and IMs on Twitter so that their friends don't have
to hop all over the web to keep up. The site is in beta, invite-only.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
Post mortems and questions about the future came pouring in following the
announcement Jerry Yang would replace Terry Semel as CEO, and Susan
Decker would step in as President. Is the move permanent? Given the two
have worked so closely with Semel, how much change can be expected? Many agree
the expectation of measuring up to Google is what did in Semel. Pundits
are watching closely to see if Google's tools-based strategy, providing
applications for free that ultimately become content, will now be replicated at
the more traditionally focused Yahoo!
Michael Moore's new documentary Sicko
was uploaded onto YouTube over the weekend, viewable in 14 installments because
of the site's 10-minute limit rule. Film Piracy is rampant on countless P2P
downloading sites, but this feature-length violation on YouTube made news. Of
course bloggers are speculating that Moore or the marketing department at The
Weinstein Company did it themselves to create even more controversy around the
movie.
Google announced the RechargeIT initiative, setting out to reduce greenhouse
emissions and oil dependence by encouraging the use of hybrid, plug-in
vehicles. Google.org has given away $1 million in grants to organizations
including the Brookings Institute, CalCars and the
Electrical Power Research Institute and has plans to request $10 million for
proposals to fund development, adoption and commercialization of fully electric
cars and those utilizing vehicle-to-grid technology.
Verizon announced plans to offer HD video on demand through its FiOS
fiber-to-the-home TV service.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
Pepsi recorded a three-fold increase in the number of
click-throughs of its Aquafina Alive
display ads when it contracted with behavioral ad network Tacoda
Inc. to help direct the ad to heath-conscious sites. Dynamic behavioral
targeting based on users' browser activity is successful because it ties
delivery to users' interests and helps eliminate duplicated viewing, according
to a feature in The Wall Street Journal. However, the Federal Trade Commission
is still reviewing targeting practices to determine whether or not it poses a
threat to consumer privacy.
MTV hired video ad firm Visible World to better customize and
target TV and online spots in real time. The technology allows advertisers to
alter, tailor and monitor video ads dynamically.

Online ad spending will nearly double in the U.S. from $19.9 billion this year
to $35.4 billion by 2012, according to a new report by JupiterResearch.
Growth will be driven by the rise in behavioral targeting, improvements in
contextual advertising and the shift toward more lucrative rich media and video
ads.

Broadcasting Systems named David Lebow as
its new President and CEO, replacing Reid Johnson who will stay
on as Founder. David worked previously for AOL Media Networks as EVP/GM,
overseeing the company's transition from a dialup ISP to a web portal.
HBO's digital division is the latest to see turnover. HBO President of
Media Ventures Jim Moloshok, VP/Business
Development John Penney and EVP/New Media Programming Carmi Zlotnikare leaving the company, reports Variety,
joining the exit of former Chris Albrecht who hired Mr. Moloshok
away from Yahoo in 2005 to lead new media efforts. HBO has probably been the
most guarded of all major media brands in distributing its content over the
net. It's not digital – it's HBO.
Online social radio network BlogTalkRadio
appointed John C. Havens as VP/Business Development. He is
charged with developing the company's Business Solutions platform enabling live
audio streaming to registered users.
