AOL invited senior
advertising executives, media agency leaders and digital media buyers to its
"First Look" event to be held April 17 in New York. Similar to Yahoo's
"infront" presentation last month, the event will try to convince advertisers to
commit a larger share of their ad buys to AOL's portal, which includes a growing
number of digital assets including reality treasure hunt Gold Rush from
Mark Burnett Productions. AOL's strategic shift from a subscription service to a
free, ad-supported portal helped increase ad revenue 454 percent from 2005 to
2006, compared to a 142 percent increase in overall ad portal spending,
according to a new Avenue A/Razorfish report. Online media billings were
up 30 percent overall in 2006, outpacing the growth in search marketing.
Current TV has just launched in the U.K. on BSkyB and Virgin Media which has upped its carriage to 50 million homes worldwide. SCI FI Channel will premiere its latest action-thriller series Painkiller Jane on April 13 at 10p, following the return of Stargate SG-1 at 8p and Stargate Atlantis at 9p. Regis Philbin will be out of commission for an indeterminate period of time as he undergoes triple heart bypass surgery later on this week. Live with Regis & Kelly will be just Kelly for a while, and among her guest sidekicks will be Anderson Cooper beginning today. MTV's Damian Fahey joins Kelly on Thursday and Friday this week. Other guest hosts will include Jeff Probst, Howie Mandel, Pat Sajak, Neal Patrick Harris, Martin Short and Donald Trump. The winner of HGTV's Design Star, David Bromstad is ready to debut in his own weekly show, Color Splash with a special preview this Sunday at 10p, after the HGTV Dream Home Giveaway. Color Splash will settle into its regular time period on Mondays at 9p starting March 19. Each week David will show homeowners how to add color in unique ways to transform their rooms. The Irvine, CA-based Freedom Broadcasting Inc., a division of Freedom Communications, will sell WLNE/Providence-New Bedford, the ABC affiliate and its digital channel, to Delaware-headquartered Global Broadcasting, LLC. And after many requests, Cynopsis Weekender College Edition is coming back! We did this once before in November 2005 and it was wonderfully successful, so we'll do it again on April 26, 2007. We will accept 350 word editorials from current college students all around the country and the world. The four most insightful, original, humorous and/or well-written pieces will be included in a future edition of Weekender , and each winning editorial will be awarded a prize of $350. College Professors, moms and dads - encourage your students to participate! All entries should be emailed no later than midnight on Friday, April 20th to me at , SUBJECT: Weekender College Edition. Students - be sure to include your name, age, college, college year, and major (if you know it), and how you can be contacted. Good luck!

~ BROADBAND
& DIGITAL ~
On Monday,
March 19, 2006, Cynopsis will launch a new daily edition - Cynopsis: Digital
. The edition will focus on the business of
digital and broadband as it relates to the television industry and beyond.
It's for anyone interested in how digital is rapidly becoming a major force in
our industry - and even for those who believe digital is something of a phase
and will never fully materialize to compete with linear television. Any
items you've become accustomed to seeing in this section of Cynopsis, will now
be in Cyn Digital, as well as plenty of other news from the digital arena.
This new daily will be written by Wayne Karrfalt, Editor of
Cynopsis: Digital , who can be reached and is
happy to accept press releases at
. In the meantime, here's
a small bit of the Broadband & Digital news for today
....NBCSports.com and SI.com are partnering to share broadband video, breaking news & analysis and photography from their prospective sites. SI.com will drive viewers toward NBCSports video segments such as breaking news and post-game interviews. NBCSports.com will produce broadband segments hosted by Sports Illustrated writers and link to SI.com's analysis and commentary pieces. The two sites will also team up to offer advertisers cross-platform, multimedia ad buys. Sony Pictures Television International's multilayered, multiplatform sci fi serial Afterworld is set to launch April 1, 2007 on Afterworld.com. SPTI acquired a total of 130 two-minute episodes of the post-apocalyptic drama, produced by Stan Rogow and co-produced and written by Brent Friedman (Dark Skies, Mortal Kombat 2). The CW's new hit reality series Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll will be added to the roster of series streamed exclusively on CWTV.com. (http://video.cwtv.com) A new episode will stream with limited commercial interruption every Monday, following Sunday encores of the show on The CW. A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM TV GUIDE
