CYNTHIA TURNER'S

CYNOPSIS Kids!
01/07/04

Good morning. It's Wednesday, January 7, 2004, and this is your early morning Kids! briefing.

Do you think it was something they ate? Jed Petrick, President/CEO of The WB yesterday announced his decision to step down from his position in April. Petrick was hired by Jamie Kellner nine years ago and is credited with much of The WB’s success, and explains his decision thusly: “I have spent the last 17 years of a 25 year career working at small, aggressive start-up companies and this past summer, after almost nine year at The WB, I began to contemplate what the next big thing in my business life could be. I have had many interesting opportunities cross my desk that I couldn’t act upon but they certainly caught my attention and intrigue. The business is going to continue changing dramatically over the next few years, I now have the freedom to decide how I play in it.”

MTV Networks and Mediacom Communications Corporation have inked a long term affiliation agreement solidifying analog distribution for all of the MTVNs (which now includes Comedy Central) on Mediacom’s cable systems.  The deal also covers distribution for MTVN’s core digital package (Noggin, Nickelodeon Games and Sports, Nicktoons, VH1, MTV 2, VH1 Classic, and MTV Hits).

Disney Channel will introduce the US to the animated series The Koala Brothers during its Playhouse Disney preschool block, Monday, January 26, 12n-2p, with four back to back episodes.  Leading into the four episode mini-marathon, Disney Channel will highlight the animals, people and places of Australia (6a-12n).  The Koala Brothers is a production of the UK’s Spellbound Entertainment; the series is represented in the US by Spellbound’s marketing partner Big Tent Entertainment.  The master toy license for the property in North America and Latin America is held by Fisher Price, a division of Mattel, and expects to have toys in stores by fall 2005. In Europe Hasbro holds the master toy license.  As part of a deal between Spellbound Entertainment and Random House Children’s Books, plans to release an initial line of books (picture books, activity and novelty books) based on the series in early 2004 will follow with a second group in the fall.

Noggin yesterday announced its first two network sponsors: Kellogg’s Mud & Bugs and Lego Explore, both of which are Starcom Worldwide clients.  The sponsorships will work as follows:
  • Lego Explore will sponsor Noggin’s Storytime, a short-form mixed animation and live action series featuring real kids telling stories, with the goal of helping tots develop language and thinking skills through storytelling.  Each of the segments tells a well known fairy tale as well as preschoolers talking about what they think happens following the traditional happily ever after ending.  Noggin’s Storytime sponsorship will include ‘brought to you by Lego Explore’ billboards at the end of each installment.
  • Kellogg’s Mud & Bugs will sponsor the Connie The Cow’s Milk Break, a week-long programming event that includes back to back episodes twice a day beginning Monday, January 26 (10-11a, 1-2p) through Sunday, February 1.  Kellogg’s will get three weeks of on-air promotional tune-in spots prior to the marathon.  Additionally, Kellogg’s will have sponsorship billboards and bumpers at the open and close of each episode of Connie The Cow.

Warner Bros. Home Video has slated Looney Tunes Back in Action for DVD/VHS release on March 2.  The DVD will feature added value segments including Whizzard of Ow, an exclusive-to-DVD Looney Tunes animated short, a ‘personalized’ on-set tour with Bugs & Daffy, and an alternative movie ending, as well as an additional 26 minutes of additional footage.

A MESSAGE FROM CYNOPSIS Kids!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Answer to Yesterday's Trivia Question:  These characters were originally voiced by Mel Blanc.  They are often seen in groups, with crossed eyes, tufts of black hair atop their little heads, and trembling-with-fear expressions, before belting out that one word they all fear the most.  Who are these guys?  oooo, tough one.  The Raid Bugs.  Kudos to:  Stephen Vrattos/NY; Heather Campbell-Crown Crafts Infant Products/Huntington Beach; Siobhan Vivian-Playhouse Disney/Burbank; and David McDermott/Venice, CA.

Today's Trivia Question:  What television character was afraid of water, fat men with whiskers, cockatoos, cats, prowlers, wooden carousel horses and heights? (To answer the trivia, click here and please remember to include your name, company, city and time zone.  Only the second four  from each time zone will appear in tomorrow's kudos list.)
