CYNTHIA TURNER'S CYNOPSIS
Kids! 01/13/04
Good morning. It's
Tuesday, January 13, 2004,
and this is your early morning
Kids!
briefing.
As expected Disney has shut down the Orlando arm of its
animation studio that was responsible for the 2D animation in
Disney movies including Lilo & Stitch, Brother Bear, Mulan, Treasure
Planet and others. “This difficult decision was based on what is
best strategically for our business in both the short and long
term," explained David Stainton, President/Disney Feature Animation
in a statement. “Having the entire animation group working together
in Burbank under one roof will further enhance our filmmaking
process.” As for the almost 260 animators working in the Orlando
unit? According to a report in the Orlando Sentinel some of the
animators will be moved to the Burbank studio, where there are some 600+
employees, down from the 1999 high of 2,200. Last year Disney
reduced the Orlando animation staff by 50 and also closed its animation
unit in Paris. There is ongoing speculation by the media, animators
and fans as to what this all means. The Motley Fool is one outlet
that articulates the theory that perhaps Disney is in the midst of, or
has crafted a bigger deal with 3D animation partner Pixar, (Disney’s
current deal with Pixar goes through 2006), or even the unlikely theory
that 2D animation is now a thing of the past.
Sesame Street celebrates its 35th anniversary season with a
PBS primetime 60m special, The Street We Live On, Sunday,
April 4, 8p. The special will also kick of the 35th season of the
preschool series the following day, April 5, on PBS Kids (check local
listings for times). The special features Elmo as he learns new
things about what life used to be like on the street through nostalgic
flashbacks. Elmo is placed in several of these flashbacks and he
gets the chance to meet Mr. Hooper, attend Maria and Luis’ wedding and
the birth of their daughter Gabi. Season 35 will feature celebrity
guests who will tell about their favorite Sesame Street Moment as well as
appearing in segments including Julianne Moore, Norah Jones, Seth Green,
Venus Williams, Martina McBride, Ruben Studdard, Harvey Fierstein, Kelsey
Grammer, Dennis Franz, Amy Brenneman, Doris Roberts, Wayne Brady, Jason
Biggs, Harry Connick Jr. and Cher.
The Autobots will do battle against the Decepticons once again in the
newest chapter of the anime series Transformer: Energon (13 x
:30), which airs Saturdays on Cartoon Network, beginning January
31
As part of Britney Spears’ newly named 25 city tour, The Onyx Hotel
Tour 2004, Showtime will air Spears’ full length concert
Sunday, March 28, live from the American Airlines Arena in Miami
Florida.
Paramount is in development on a live action, with some CGI
animation, version of the book The Trumpet of the Swan (1970) by
author E.B. White (Charlotte’s Web/1952, Stuart Little/1945), according
to Daily Variety. Jordan Kerner will produce with Katie Ford
(Miss Congeniality) writing.
¡Sopresa!, the Spanish-language kid targeted network launches its
website,
www.sporpresatv.com,
this week. The site will feature programming information as well as
activities and Club ¡Sopresa!, which provides its members with perks
including advance notice of contests, promotions, member discounts and
other benefits; ¡Sopresa! Tienda, where various products can be viewed
and purchased; ¡Sopresa del dia!, (Surprises of the Day!) featuring
Hispanic history facts and holiday celebrations, and the Que Pasa poll
that allows viewers to vote for their favorite programs.
