CYNTHIA TURNER'S CYNOPSIS Kids! 01/14/04
Good morning. It's Wednesday, January 14, 2004, and this is your early morning Kids! briefing.
ADV Films has acquired the broadcast and home entertainment rights to the trilogy Fist of the North Star, based on the like named manga series. ADV will air the Fist of the North Star on its Anime Network spring or summer of this year, to be followed by the DVD release, summer 2004
Interactive TV company OpenTV has launched its interactive games channel, PlayJam on EchoStar?s Dish Network, making PlayJam available to an additional 7 million+ subscribers and some 20 million households. Dish Network subscribers can access PlayJam via its Dish Home portal and select from a menu of games. Consumers can play and preview the first level of each of the games, but to play additional levels they have to subscribe to the service via Dish Network, for which EchoStar currently charges its subscribers $4.99 a month.
The Anime Network is extending its coverage again as Comcast On Demand continues to roll out of the network to include Detroit, Indianapolis, Mobile, Savannah, Charleston, Huntsville, Atlanta and Albuquerque beginning this month.
Tokyopop Inc. has awarded Hasbro the master toy license for the action/adventure anime series Rave Master slated to debut on Cartoon Network this year. Rave Master, based on the 21 volume series of graphic novels of the same name, follows the trials of a regular boy named Haru who finds that he is ?destined to save the world from evil? (but really, who isn?t these days). Haru travels the world to seeking numerous Rave stones that he must retrieve in order to defeat the hateful Shadow Guard. The graphic novels, animated series and two video games (PS2, GC) and various toys have done quite well in Japan. Tokyopop is also the publisher of the Rave Master graphic novels.
Cinar Corporation announced yesterday that the Commission des valeurs mobili貥s du Qu颥c (CVMQ) and the other Canadian securities regulatory authorities that had previously issued cease trade orders against the securities of Cinar in spring 2000 following Cinar?s financial and legal scandals, have pulled back. That lifting of the various cease-trade orders permits the previously announced acquisition to proceed of the outstanding shares of Cinar by an investor group led by Michael Hirsh, Toper Taylor and TD Capital Canadian Private Equity Partners.
Miramax Home Entertainment has acquired the North American rights to In Search of Santa, a CGI animated picture from Tundra Productions (Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys) and Colorland Animation Productions, according to Daily Variety. The film tells of two quarreling penguin princess sisters who come up against pirates and other foes on their South to North Pole quest to find Santa and protect the family throne. The VHS/DVD release is slated for holiday 2004.

The slogan is getting bigger but Burger King is aiming to making sure that you don?t, as the fast food chain joined in the low-carbohydrates game yesterday with the presentation of its bunless Whopper (isn?t that a fast food oxymoron?) and plans to introduce salads with pieces of steak, chicken and shrimp. The naked Whopper, as it were, is part of BK?s ?a new way to Have It Your Way? low-carb initiative and will be available begging next week and will be served with a fork and knife. The salads featuring chicken, shrimp and steak will debut in February, March and May respectively. Additional options as part of the BK low-carb menu include the option to substitute salads for fries and bottled water for soda.

The regional teams are set up with the West headed by SVP, Melanie Davis; South by Brandon Lucas/SVP; the Midwest by Dave Clark/SVP; and the Northeast will be led by Jim Steen/SVP.
