CYNOPSIS Kids!
01/16/04

Good morning. It's Friday, January 16, 2004, and this is your early morning Kids! Brrrr-iefing.

PBS Kids launches the new pre-school series Boohbah, from Ragdoll Ltd. who also produce both Teletubbies and Brum, Monday, January 19 (check local listings).  Simultaneous to the series debut, PBS Kids will launch an interactive Boohbah area on its website (www.pbskids.org/Boohbah) as well as an educational outreach initiative.  Boohbah features five atoms (Humbah, Zumbah, Zing Zing Zingbah, Jumbah and Jingbah) that use their energy to help pre-schoolers develop their problem solving and decision making skills as well as getting kids up and moving, exercising and involved in age appropriate activities.
As part of the educational outreach initiative, materials based on the series and developed with Faith Rogow, Ph.D., will be available free to parents, educators and caregivers through local PBS stations nationwide.  Boohbah premiered in the UK this past spring 2003 on ITV’s CiTV and GMTV, who were responsible for commissioning the series and with GMTV also serving as an investor in the program.  Here in the US, Scholastic will publish a line of Boohbah story and concept books and novelty formats.

CTN: College Television Network will be relaunched as mtvU, by parent network MTV, on Tuesday, January 20.  MTV, which acquired the network in October 2002, is repositioning the mtvU to focus on the multiple aspects of college life.  mtvU will reach out to students in the various places they hang out and as a resource for information, through TV programming, online content and on campus experiences like events and pro-social initiatives.  With music as its core, mtvU will play music videos of both artists college kids are into as well as up and coming artists, and through a project called The Cut, the network will highlight newer groups.  The Cut is a visual stamp that will be placed on select music videos signaling that mtvU recommends that group/song/video and the music of these groups is available for free exclusive downloads at the www.mtvU.com. mtvU plans to include more contests and continued focus on short form programming including hourly MTV News updates and reports from CBS News, as well as continuing to air the weekly series The Freshman and viewers choice countdown series the Dean’s List.  mtvU is available at 720+ colleges nationwide

TriMedia Entertainment Group, Inc. and Gerry Anderson Productions plc, have signed a ‘memorandum of understanding’ (aka letter of intent) regarding a co-venture for the development, production, distribution and marketing of a new version of Anderson’s classic TV series Captain Scarlet: The Return of the Mysterons.  The terms of the deal include, “the broadcast placement of the new Captain Scarlet TV series, merchandising of Captain Scarlet related products, DVD home video distribution and sales, computer & video gaming and such other opportunities for the international branding of Captain Scarlet.  It is anticipated that TriMedia's co-venture partner, Sony Music Entertainment, will be partnering in the project with its Sony Wonder division and the family of Sony companies on the development and exploitation of the Captain Scarlet branded property.”  The financial terms of the agreement are still being negotiated.  Gerry Anderson is producer/writer/creator of a group of 1960s TV series and a style of production called Supermarionation.  The shows include Thunderbirds (currently airing on TechTV and a live action feature film in production from Universal), Captain Scarlet (a PC game based on the property debuted at E3 2003), and Joe 90, all licensed by Carlton International Media Ltd.  As of spring 2003 Disney was reportedly developing a live-action movie of Anderson's Joe 90 about a 10 year-old boy who is a secret agent.

Marvel Enterprises, Inc. has established a new in-company unit to focus on video game development for its huge library of superheroes, villains and other characters.  Marvel has appointed Ames Kirshen head the division as Manager/Games Development, reporting to Gui Karyo, President/Publishing, Marvel.  In this role Kirshen will oversee development of all licensed video games based on Marvel characters, including the creative content, along with other members of Marvel's Publishing division, with Karyo supervising the overall game development process.  Additionally Kirshen will work with Tim Rothwell, President/Worldwide Consumer Products, Marvel to foster new licensing relationships with game publishers.  Prior to joining Marvel, Kirshen was with Warner Bros. and DC Comics where he helped produce Ubi Soft’s Batman and Superman game titles.  Marvel has a handful of games currently in development that will be released over the next two years.

A MESSAGE FROM CYNOPSIS Kids!

psst!  what are you waiting for?

Friday's Kids Fun Fact:  Lillian Moller Gilbreth (1878-1972), the mother of 12 children, had good reason to improve the efficiency and convenience of household items. A pioneer in ergonomics, Gilbreth patented many devices, including an electric food mixer, and the trash can with step-on lid-opener that can be found in most households today.  (Wasn't the family in the original movie Cheaper by the Dozen the Gilbreths?  Coincidence?)

Answer to yesterday's Trivia Question:  Selma Diamond was the disembodied voice of whose electronic diary? JUDY JETSON'S "DI DI DIARY".  Kudos to: Jimmy Bagley-Turner Entertainment/Atlanta; Mary Cregan-Radio Disney/Atlanta; Bridget McGill-WAM!
