CYNTHIA TURNER'S
CYNOPSIS Kids!
01/20/04

Good morning. It's Tuesday, January 20, 2004, and this is your early morning Kids! briefing from the NATPE Convention in Las Vegas.

The restless discontent that left NATPE 2003 goers doubting whether in this day of total connectivity there was a need for the convention anymore, has yielded this year to the more positive old time complaints of sore feet and appreciation for the very padded carpet at the NBC booth.  While not the NATPE of days gone by, NATPE 2004 certainly saw the return of some hustle and bustle to the floor where sales were being made and people were dropping by booths to say hi, interrupting meetings and generally running into to people which if not the most important aspect of any trade conference, definitely a very close second.  Sure many programs came into the event already cleared in many markets, but when much of the focus of many conversations was about what party you were going to, followed by the usual posturing and angling for invites (Jerry Seinfeld performing at Sony’s party being the big ticket) you have to think NATPE is heading in a better direction. And yet there are those who will always work to perfect their art of complaining.

The Hatchery, a production company founded this past November by Margaret Loesch, Bruce Stein and Dan Angel, announced that CBS had given them the go-ahead to create a musical three hour TV movie special of Scrooge, according to Daily Variety.  Serving as Exec. Producers for the holiday special are Loesch, Stein and composer/screenwriter Leslie Bricusse as well as Dan Angel and Billy Brown (Angel and Brown penned TNT’s Door to Door).  Loesch says the special is budgeted at $12 million, and is slated for to air holiday 2004.  In 1970 Bricusse adapted Scrooge for a feature film and more recently a stage version traveling the UK.

Starz has inked an agreement with Japanese animation distributor, Manga Entertainment Inc., for 13 of Manga Ent.’s anime films, which will be featured on Starz’s Action channel.  Anime film included in the deal are Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor 1, Patlabor 2, Blood The Last Vampire, Perfect Blue, Street Fighter IIV, Black Magic M-66, Macross II: Lovers Again, Macross Plus, New Dominion, Tank Police, Shadow Skill and X.

"What is essential is invisible to the eye," wrote author/illustrator Antoine de Saint-Exupery in his classic 1943 kids book The Little Prince.  According to published reports in the UK, the book about a pilot who crashes in the desert and meets a boy who says he is a prince from a far away planet ,is being made into a animated movie by Pathe, the folks behind Chicken Run.  If you are thinking that there is already a movie version of this story you'd be right.  In 1974 director/producer Stanley Donen made a live action musical adaptation of The Little Prince, penned by Alan Jay Lerner, who also wrote the lyrics with composer Frederick Lowe and featuring choreography by Bob Fosse and Ronn Forella.  Staring in the movie was a wild cast including Richard Kiley, Bob Fosse, Gene Wilder, Joss Ackland and Donna McKechnie.

Nickelodeon announced yesterday that Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz have been named as hosts of Nickelodeon’s 17th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards, Saturday, April 3, 8-9:30p. Additionally, the network announced this year's nominees.  As always kids are invited to vote for their favorites in both traditional entertainment categories (e.g. favorite actor/actress, favorite movie, TV series etc.) starting March 8the on nick.com and beginning March 24-28 kids can vote via a toll free number.  Last year more than 20 million cast their votes for their favorites in 20 different categories.

psst! what are you waiting for?

Answer to Friday's Trivia Question:   He was born in the Great Forest, though once he moved to the city he dressed in suits, went to school and became quite a sophisticate.  Then he decided to go back to Great Forest where he marries and has as son.  Who is this guy? BABAR THE ELEPHANT.  Kudos to: Jonathan Meath-MeathMedia/Fablevision/Boston; Steve Snyder-Brighter Child Interactive/Columbus; Michael Klinghoffer-The Idea Group/NY; Bonnie Harris-PB&J Prods/NY.

Today's Trivia Question:  This fiberglass tourist attraction is located off Interstate 90 in Blue Earth, Minnesota.  It stands 55 feet tall and cost the town $43,000 to erect it in 1978.  It is the same tall figure seen in millions of television commercials over the years.  Any idea who this statue is of? (To answer the trivia, click here and please remember to include your name, company, city and time zone. Only the second four from each time zone will appear in tomorrow's kudos list.)
