CYNTHIA TURNER'S
CYNOPSIS Kids!
01/21/04

Good morning. It's Wednesday, January 21, 2004, and this is your early morning Kids! briefing.

Just 21 days ago Turner Broadcasting Communications launched its kid targeted English language channel, Pogo, in India.  This week TBS announced that Pogo has acquired the TV rights to the movie Harry Potter: and the Sorcerer’s Stone from Warner Bros. International Television Distribution.  Pogo plans to air the movie spring 2004, as kids in India complete their school year and head into their summer break.  Additionally, TBS has inked a deal with Conax an access technology service that will allow Pogo to be broadcast as a direct to operator (DTO) service to India’s cable networks, according to a www.Indiantelevision.com report.  Both Pogo and TBS’ Cartoon Network, which debuted in India in1998) are distributed by Zee Turner and broadcast via the PAS-10 satellite.

This year India will also see the introduction of two other kid focused channels, one from Disney and the other from India’s UTV Software Communications.  Other kid TV available in India includes Nickelodeon (previously distributed by Zee Turner and now switching to MTV) and per TVAsia Magazine kid/teen programming blocks on upwards of 40+ channels.  Yes, that does sound like a lot of channels, but consider these facts from the Business Standard: “While the UK has 20 channels to cater to 11 million kids, the US airs 306 shows per week for 61 million children across 17 networks.  In contrast, India does not have a single localized channel for its 315 million kids, who represent one-third of the country’s population under the age of 15 years. This is a segment as big as all Western European countries put together.”

Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. yesterday unveiled its newly refurbished TV Guide Channel that launches on DirecTV this week and simultaneously closes in on the 70m HH mark.  The revamped includes original new long and short form programming, on-air branding, and a hosted home base for the network, which Gemstar hopes will help establish the channel as a destination for consumers.  On Monday, January 26 TV Guide Channel will begin introducing its long form programming including What’s On, the networks signature hosted nightly guide to primetime programming, produced at TV Guide channel studios in LA, as well as two original hour-long specials a month.  The channel redo will be supported by trade ads and the networks first consumer marketing campaign.

A MESSAGE FROM CYNOPSIS Kids!

psst! what are you waiting for?

Answer to yesterday's Trivia Question:   This fiberglass tourist attraction is located off Interstate 90 in Blue Earth, Minnesota.  It stands 55 feet tall and cost the town $43,000 to erect it in 1978.  It is the same tall figure seen in millions of television commercials over the years.  Any idea who this statue is of?  THE JOLLY GREEN GIANT!  Kudos to: David Kern-ITN Networks/NY; Erik Haugen-ITN Networks/NY; Kevin O'Connor-Smarty Pants Inc./NY; Brad Stern-American Consumer Prods/NY; Anne Johnson-Hawkeye Prods/Palmer Lake CO; Jennie Clausen-VEE Corp/Minneapolis; Mae Lee-WB 100+ Station Group/Burbank; Kevin Davis-Premier Retail Networks/Santa Monica; Greg Rose-SD Entertainment/Canoga Park; David McDermott-Creative Consultant/LA.

Today's Trivia Question:   What two brothers owned the Funky Finger Productions? (To answer the trivia, click here and please remember to include your name, company, city and time zone. Only the second four from each time zone will appear in tomorrow's kudos list.)
