This week Nintendo finally provided the answer to its August 2003 mysteriously ambiguous announcement that Nintendo would launch a new video game product that would be “surprising and unique.” The product in question is a dual screen handheld portable gaming system code-named Nintendo DS and will be introduced ‘in full’ this May at the Entertainment Electronics Expo this May 12-14, 2004. The Nintendo DS is slated to launch in retail stores before the end of 2004. In addition to Nintendo developing software for the console it is in discussions with third-party developers, with the assurance that Nintendo DS will be marketed separately from its Game Boy Advance and GameCube consoles. What can players do with a dual screen console? Using a soccer game as an example Nintendo’s announcement explains that players will be “able to manage their game progress from two different perspectives,” therefore, “users can view the whole game on one screen while simultaneously focusing on an individual soccer player's tackle or goal on the other screen” and, “no longer be forced to interrupt game play to shift perspective, such as moving from a wide shot to a close-up,” and allowing the game to be played in real time.

"If the person you are talking to doesn't appear to be listening, be patient. It may simply be that he has a small piece of fluff in his ear." -- Winnie the Pooh
More Pooh slinging this week in the latest chapter of the ongoing dispute over the royalties and rights for Winnie The Pooh, as a US Court of Appeals has rejected motions for an appeal by Disney and Claire Milne (the granddaughter of author A.A. Milne) to regain the rights under copyright to Winnie the Pooh from the Slesinger family, originally granted in an agreement with author A. A. Milne in the 1930's. This decision means that a full blown trial, or circus however you choose to look at it, will follow in 2005.
