The premiere of Disney Channel’s original movie, Pixel Perfect
this past Friday, January 16, 8-9:45p, was the number one ranked show
of the week among all basic cable and broadcast programming with K6-11
(7.7) and Tweens 9-14 (7.1), delivering an audience of 1,844,000 and
1,180,000 respectively, according to data provided by Disney. For
the week January 12-18, 2004, Disney Channel earned its best weekly
average ratings with K6-11 (6.1) since the week of August 11, and its
best weekly average ratings with Tweens 9-14 (4.9) since the week of
August 18.
Cartoon Network’s Sunday, January 18th 10p play of Teen
Titans, earned its highest-ever delivery and ratings for K2-11 to
date since the series premiere on July 19, 2003, and second highest ever
with K6-11 since the series debut. Additionally the telecast was
the top telecast of the week for Cartoon Network with K2-11delivery
(1,649,000) and ratings (4.2), and K6-11 delivery (1,095,000) and ratings
(4.6), per data provided by Cartoon.
As Dreamworks prepares to release its eagerly anticipated movie
Shrek 2 this coming May, the movie company says that they are
setting Shrek 3 in motion, according to Daily
Variety.
On May 17, 1954, US Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren delivered the
unanimous ruling in the case of Brown vs. Board of Education,
stating:
"We conclude that, in the field of public education, the
doctrine of 'separate but equal' has no place. Separate educational
facilities are inherently unequal."
TV programming honoring the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s
ruling and geared towards kids & teens and/or families include:
The N, the teen daily teen daypart (6p-6a), has begun
production on a 60m documentary, Brown v. Board of Education 50 Years
Later: The Legacy of School Integration (working title), which will
premiere Monday, May 17. The documentary will track a diverse group
of high school students at a public magnate school in Buffalo, NY as they
participate in a project to de-segregate their school's lunchroom, which
like many cafeterias across the country kids congregate with other kids
of the same race in separate parts of the cafeteria, as the students
confront some hard questions about themselves, friends and their school
and then decide what to do.
Working in partnership Court TV and AOL Time Warner will
collaborate with the US Brown vs. Board of Education Commission and the
Brown Foundation to create of interstitials and specials that will air on
Court TV--:30 interstitials featuring prominent African Americans and
others reflecting on the landmark decision. The spots are airing
now through May, 2004. Premiering this May is a special youth town hall
meeting shot in Topeka, Kansas, at the Brown vs. Board of Education
National Historic Site and featuring several original plaintiffs,
attorneys and family members involved in the case, as well as civil
rights activists among others. Also airing in May is a 60m documentary
that will provide an overview of the landmark decision and take a look at
its effects today.
Additionally, a special Time for Kids supplement based on the
content in the documentary will be distributed to schools in the first
part of this year.
The X Games begin tomorrow January 24-27, in Aspen for the third
consecutive year in a row, and will feature 250+ athletes from around the
world competing for medals and prize money in the following sports: Moto
X, Ski, Snowboard and Snowmobile. This year's competition schedule
has been modified to accommodate daily live telecasts. As a result,
Winter X Games VIII will feature first-time nighttime events to go along
with the live telecasts on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC Sports January
24-27 in the US, while ESPN International will distribute the Games
worldwide. EXPN.com will provide extensive online coverage. In addition,
for the first time, SportsCenter, ESPN's flagship daily news program,
will report live from Aspen/Snowmass on Monday, January 26 and Tuesday,
January 27. Each of those nights, the 11 p.m. ET SportsCenter will
contain live event coverage from Winter X Games VIII, plus
highlights/news segments. Earlier this week ESPN and the Aspen Skiing
Company reached an agreement that will keep the Winter X Games in
Aspen/Snowmass through Winter X Games XI in 2007.
It will come as no surprise that Cinar Corporation President/CEO
of the past year Stuart Snyder, will step down from his
position subsequent to the approval of the Cinar’s acquisition, by an
investor group comprise of Michael Hirsh, Toper Taylor and TD Capital
Canadian Private Equity Partners, at a Special Meeting scheduled for
February 17. Assuming all goes as planned on 2/17, Snyder will exit
Cinar exactly one year into his three year contract. As part of his
separation agreement Snyder, who was reportedly earning $500,000 a year,
will receive $1 million for the remaining two years of his deal, an
additional $1.2 million and Cinar will invest $1.5 million into a stage
show or Clifford the Big Red Dog to be produced by Turnstile
Entertainment, according to Daily Variety. A shareholder in
Turnstile, Snyder’s shares of the company have been held in a blind trust
while he served as top dog at Cinar.
Good Morning America’s book club, Read This! has
selected The Second Summer of the Sisterhood (Delacorte) as its
first young adult novel to be featured by the club. Written by
author Ann Brashares, The Second Summer of the Sisterhood is the sequel
to the bestseller The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
Brashares's is currently at work on her third book in the series, Girls
in Pants: The Third Summer of the Sisterhood, slated for early
2005. Delacorte Press Books for Young Readers is an imprint of the
Random House Children's Books division of Random House, Inc., whose
parent company is Bertelsmann AG.
OH NO … its Mr. Bill, the star, and seemingly accident prone,
little clay guy, who became famous in short films on Saturday Night Live
(late 70s/early 80s) for his regular unhappy flattening at the end of
every episode, has got a new job. Mr. Bill has been named the
spokesperson in a series of Louisiana conservation public
service announcements which aims to educate the public (kids &
adults) about the ongoing erosion of the state’s coastal marsh and swamp
lands (aka wetlands). The spots are to begin airing this summer and
include a cast of wildlife characters a shrimp, eagle and so far no
mention of Sluggo. Additionally, a website titled Mr. Bill
America’s Wetland World Tour will include kid friendly games, activities
and information. Mr. Bill is the creation of New Orleans native
Walter Williams
Tiger Aspect Productions has entered into a three year license
deal with Nickelodeon UK for Tiger Aspect’s animated series
Mr. Bean. Nick UK plans to run Mr. Bean as a strip series on
Nicktoons TV beginning February. The series has also been sold in
40+ territories including Super RTL (Germany), ABC (Australia), Disney
(Asia), SVT (Sweden), YLE (Finland), CBC (Canada), Forte (Spain), RTE
(Ireland), and ATV (Hong Kong). Worldwide TV sales, excluding UK,
US, Japan and Hungary, are handled by Fremantle International
Distribution. BBC Worldwide has recently acquired the TV & home video
rights to Mr. Bean for the Japanese market with the broadcaster
tbd.

signed for the property including; VIP oversees licensing (France), Ideal
Licensing (Italy), El Ocho (Spain & Portugal) and EEMC (Eastern

Licensees for Ziggy include: Kelly Toys vinyl-head dolls
(Ziggy in uniform, including Army Ziggy, Air Force Pilot , and US Navy

fleece, loungewear, underwear, bags and wallets for juniors; Ziggy will
also be featured on Smart Practice’s medical & dental reminder cards;
