CYNOPSIS Kids!
01/26/04

Good morning. It's Monday, January 26, 2004, and this is your early morning Kids! briefing.

A Washington DC couple, James and Laurie Ryan, is pointing their fingers at both MTV and its hidden camera series Punk’d, which is hosted and produced by actor Ashton Kutcher and airs on the network, in a negligence lawsuit.  The couple is seeking damages of millions of dollars relating to the taping of a hidden camera pilot titled Harassment, also produced by Kutcher, in January 2002 at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel, according to a report on the Smoking Gun website.  The pilot, which never aired, captured the Ryans on tape as they entered their hotel room to discover what they thought to be a murdered body.  The DC couple is attempting to use the similarity between Harassment and Punk’d to prove that both Kutcher and MTV have behaved negligently in their programming.  According to the Smoking Gun report, one of the MTV arguments presented to a US District Court in LA last month that, “the Ryan’s shouldn't be allowed to ‘bootstrap their claims to the notoriety surrounding a different show.’”  However, last week the Judge hearing the case rejected the motion and further ruled that ‘he would not limit the Ryan’s from attempting to introduce evidence regarding the hit program-and the shared lineage of the two shows.’

The 12the chapter in the Power Rangers saga, Power Rangers DinoThunder, is set to premiere as part of the new Jetix programming block, Saturday, February 14, 8:30a on ABC Family, where it will air every weekend on Saturday and Sunday, 8:30a.  Power Rangers DinoThunder will also premiere that same day as part of the Jetix programming block (7:30p) on Toon Disney, airing every Saturday and Sunday evening.  Finally the series premieres on ABC Kids Saturday, February 21, 11:30a.

According to the results of a new poll concerning teenagers and their career hopes from Junior Achievement of 1000 teens 13-18 (October-November 2003), there is a gap between boys and girls when talking about the type of higher education needed to obtain a job in the career of their choice.  The survey shows that 73.9% of girls believe that a four year college degree and/or graduate degree is a prerequisite to obtaining their dream job, vs. 61.5% of boys who think that those degrees are essential.  What jobs are they looking for?  The majority of the teens surveyed (12.8%) said ‘businessperson’ would be their choice of career occupation.  The survey revealed that twice as many girls (8.3%) vs. boys (3.9%) selected doctor as their number one occupation, followed by teaching (girls 7.9% vs. boys 1.6%), and lawyers (girls 7.0% vs. boys 2.0%).  And for boys?  Three times as many boys (6.8%) as girls (1.7%) said their dream occupation would be in the computer field, with pro athlete coming in at number two (7.2% vs. girls 0.9%).  Will they follow in their parents foot steps?  An average of 78% of the teens surveyed indicated that they did not want to follow the career choice of their Moms and Dads (76.1% of boys and 82.5% of girls).  Expectations for teens’ annual salary by age 40 are at the lowest levels in five years of polling, with 8.1 percent of students believing they will earn one million dollars by the age of 40. This is down from a high of 14.1 percent in 2002. As for expectations of achieving their ideal job, Black students were the most optimistic (42.7%), followed by Hispanic students (33.3%), White students (31.2%), and Asian/Pacific Islander students (28.8%).
