Nominations for the 76th Annual Academy Awards were announced
yesterday morning in LA by The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and
Sciences. Several of the pictures popular with tweens and teens are
top of the awards heap this year. Leading the pack with the most
nominations is The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (New Line)
with 11 nominations (including best picture, director and film editing,
visual effects and original song), followed by Master and Commander: The
Far Side of the World (Fox) with ten nominations (including best picture,
cinematography, directing, film editing and visual effects), and then
Seabiscuit (Universal/DreamWorks/Spyglass) with 7 nods (including best
film, cinematography, film editing); five for Pirates of the Caribbean:
Curse of the Black Pearl (Buena Vista); Finding Nemo (Buena Vista); and
several pictures receiving one nomination, including Brother Bear (Buena
Vista) and Whale Rider (Newmarket Films) which earned newcomer
13-year-old star Keisha Castle Hughes a nomination in the best actress
category, making her the youngest nominee ever in this category.
Thinking it was Shirley Temple? Well, Temple actually received an
honorary Oscar at the ripe old age of six in 1934. The Academy
Awards will be presented on ABC, Sunday, February 29, 8p, live from the
Kodak Theatre in LA.
Who are the youngest actors/actresses to be nominated (and some
winners) in the Academy Award race? Tatum O’Neal holds the record as
the youngest competitive Oscar winner at the age of 10 when she won a
best supporting actress Oscar for Paper Moon (1973), while Anna Paquin
was 11 when she won in the category for The Piano (1993) in the same
category and 10-year-old Mary Badham earned a nomination for To Kill A
Mocking Bird (1962). As for actors 10-year-old Jackie Cooper was
the youngest actor to be nominated as best actor for his role in Skippy
(1930), the youngest nominee for best supporting actor is Justin Henry
was 8 when he was nominated for his role in Kramer Vs. Kramer (1979) and
in case you were wondering Haley Joel Osment was 11 when he got a nod in
