CYNTHIA TURNER'S

CYNOPSIS Kids!
01/28/04

Good morning. It's Wednesday, January 28, 2004, and this is your early morning Kids! briefing.

Nominations for the 76th Annual Academy Awards were announced yesterday morning in LA by The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.  Several of the pictures popular with tweens and teens are top of the awards heap this year.  Leading the pack with the most nominations is The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (New Line) with 11 nominations (including best picture, director and film editing, visual effects and original song), followed by Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (Fox) with ten nominations (including best picture, cinematography, directing, film editing and visual effects), and then Seabiscuit (Universal/DreamWorks/Spyglass) with 7 nods (including best film, cinematography, film editing); five for Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (Buena Vista); Finding Nemo (Buena Vista); and several pictures receiving one nomination, including Brother Bear (Buena Vista) and Whale Rider (Newmarket Films) which earned newcomer 13-year-old star Keisha Castle Hughes a nomination in the best actress category, making her the youngest nominee ever in this category.  Thinking it was Shirley Temple? Well, Temple actually received an honorary Oscar at the ripe old age of six in 1934.  The Academy Awards will be presented on ABC, Sunday, February 29, 8p, live from the Kodak Theatre in LA.

Who are the youngest actors/actresses to be nominated (and some winners) in the Academy Award race? Tatum O’Neal holds the record as the youngest competitive Oscar winner at the age of 10 when she won a best supporting actress Oscar for Paper Moon (1973), while Anna Paquin was 11 when she won in the category for The Piano (1993) in the same category and 10-year-old Mary Badham earned a nomination for To Kill A Mocking Bird (1962).  As for actors 10-year-old Jackie Cooper was the youngest actor to be nominated as best actor for his role in Skippy (1930), the youngest nominee for best supporting actor is Justin Henry was 8 when he was nominated for his role in Kramer Vs. Kramer (1979) and in case you were wondering Haley Joel Osment was 11 when he got a nod in the category for The Sixth Sense (2000)

UPN program changes - Arriving to the network on Wednesday, March 10 is a CGI-animated series called Game Over (Carsey-Werner-Mandabach) scheduled to air at 8p and immediately followed by a return of The Mullets at 830p.  Game Over follows the lives of video game characters when they're not 'working'. Star Trek Enterprise will shift to 9pm, replacing the current Top Model repeats.

Paul Newman will provide the voice for a ‘car’ character in the upcoming feature Cars from Pixar Animation Studio’s Director by John Lasseter (Toy Story, Toy Story 2, and A Bugs Life), presented by Disney and slated for a 2005 release.  Other celebrities lending their voices to Cars characters includes NASCAR racing luminary, Richard Petty, Owen Wilson (Shanghai Knights, The Royal Tenenbaums), Bonnie Hunt (Monsters, Inc.), and Dan Whitney (Bravo’s Larry the Cable Guy).  Previously titled Route 66, Pixar & Disney officially changed the movie title to Cars in mid 2002.

Additionally, this weekend, January 30-February 1, 2004, Newman will drive a Disney/Pixar sponsored racecar at The Rolex 24 At Daytona race when he attempts to break his own Guinness Book record as the oldest driver to win a professionally sanctioned race, which he set in 1995.  Paul, as I call him, is 79 years old and races on a team with Kyle Petty, Michael Brockman, and Gunnar Jeannette, and will be driving a Fabcar-Porsche Daytona Prototype.  I dare anyone to beat Paul Newman, really, I dare you.

Former Disney Co. directors Roy E. Disney and Stanley Gold have been reaching out to Disney shareholders and suggesting that they withhold votes to re-election Disney’s Chairman Michael Eisner as well as three board directors; George Mitchell, John Bryson and Judith Estrin.  Disney’s annual meeting will be held in Philadelphia on March, 3.  You’ll recall that Disney and Gold both stepped down from the Disney Co.’s board of directors while denouncing Eisner for a number of things including not having a long range plan to grow the company.

Answer to yesterday's Trivia Question: This crime-fighting professional is allergic to horsehair, which wouldn't be a big deal except that he lives in a fairly rural area - ponds to fish in, diners to court in, an the occasional horse. Who is this fearless officer? DEPUTY BARNEY FIFE. Kudos to:  Mindy Bloom-WTWB/Greensboro; Chris Fagan-Cameo Group/NY; Betty Hulsey-Radio Disney Network/Chicago; Heather Campbell-Crown Crafts Infant Products/Huntington Beach.

Today's Trivia Question:  What is the name of Clarissa Darling's pet gator?  (To answer the trivia, click here and please remember to include your name, company, city and time zone.  Only the second four  from each time zone will appear in tomorrow's kudos list.)
