CYNTHIA TURNER'S

CYNOPSIS Kids!
01/30/04

Good morning. It's Friday, January 30, 2004, and this is your early morning Kids! briefing.

Two weeks into season four of Kids' WB's animated series Static Shock the program showed a nice week to week growth this past Saturday, January 24, 11:30a, across K2-11 and K6-11. K2-11 were up 50% with a 3.0/13 vs. the premiere episode,a nd K6-11 were up 37% with a 3.7/17 week to week.

They've stayed up late, swapped manly financial discussions, but in the mornin', they aren't gonna be makin' waffles. Pixar has said that after ten months of trying to negotiate a new agreement, it was ending its discussions with Disney to extend their existing five-picture deal, and will begin dialogs with other studios to distribute its films beginning 2006.  The two Pixar pictures remaining as part of the Disney deal, The Incredibles and Cars, are slated for release in 2004 and 2005 respectively.  Pixar has been clear that moving forward it intends to maintain its own projects, which is contrary to the existing agreement in which Disney will retain the rights to distribute Pixars first seven films, with Pixar continuing to receive its current share of the profits in perpetuity, and Disney will have the rights to solely finance and produce sequels to the films if Pixar declines to co-finance and produce them under the terms of the current agreement.

Disneys Buena Vista International has broken off a dozen year distribution partnership with French film co. Gaumont, with Gaumont already taking up a new joint distribution enterprise with Columbia TriStar, per a Daily Variety report.  Columbia and Gaumont have also had a long partnership (17 years) in the home video distribution area.

India will get yet another kids TV channel by the end of 2004, this one will be called PowerKidz from Data Quest Entertainment, a soon to be launched Indian marketing and distribution arm for a consortium of independent US animation studios, according to a report on www.Indiantelevision.com.  PowerKidz plans to offer a combination of animation and live action programming, some of which will come from newly established deals with companies including EM TV, Magma films, Nelvana Productions, Cinar Animation, Alphanim, Mercury Film Works and several others.  Additionally, DQE will premiere its weekend kids show Saahasa Baluru (Adventurous Kids) tomorrow, Saturday, January 31 on ETV in Telegu.  Turner Broadcasting launched Pogo, its kid targeted English language channel, at the beginning of this month and Indias UTV Software Communications has also announced it will launch a kid targeted channel later this year, not to mention the other current or pending kid targeted TV endeavors (Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel) and the already existing kid programming in India.

Weekly Reader and ABC News have teamed to bring timely and comprehensive presidential election coverage throughout the year to students and teachers across the country.  Weekly Reader has been and will continue to feature cover stories on all of their publications and on their website (www.weeklyreader.com) about the three ABC News buses that set out on the campaign trail this month.  The buses, acting as a traveling TV studio, took to the road this month to crisscross the country and report on the issues, the candidates and the voters as well as visit schools.  Weekly Reader will also feature the work of kid reporters including special reports from kids attending the political conventions.  Additionally Weekly Reader and ABC News will conduct polls to find out what kids are thinking about the campaigns and the election, their most recent poll was released this week and reveals that 72% of teens say that in terms of an impact on their own lives, it does matter who gets elected.  Finally Weekly Reader will also run a series of election related contests throughout the year, check the website.

Warner Home Videos President, Jim Cardwell unveiled WHVs strategic reorganization and introduction of a new business unit yesterday, explaining that the change in management prepares WHV for the challenges of the ever increasing DVD/Video marketplace but also optimizing our resources and upgrading our business processes.
The re-org includes shifts:
-Mark Horak will become EVP/GM for Canada, Latin America and Australia.
In his new role Horak will be responsible for overseeing his regions P&L as well as growing DVD saturation within his territories.  Horak, formerly EVP/Worldwide Marketing, was responsible for creating worldwide release strategies for WHV movie titles (e.g. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Matrix Reloaded), as well as reinforcing corporate synergy across WB divisions, specifically between WHV and the domestic and international theatrical operations relating to release strategies.
-Jeffrey M. Brown relocates from WHV Europe to become SVP/Worldwide Marketing from his role as SVP/Co-Managing Director for Europe, Middle East and Africa. Most recently Brown was VP/International Marketing responsible for coordinating marketing and promotional strategies for DVD market expansion.
-Philippe Cardon becomes SVP/GM, heading up WHVs Europe, Middle East and African operations while continuing to supervise DVD growth in these territories.  Cardon joined WHV France in 1991 as Director/Finance & Administration, and in1994 was promoted to Deputy Managing Director.
-Leading the newly created Global Business Transformation Unit is Marc Gareton, previously SVP/Canada, Latin America and Australia.
-Support Gareton will be Keith Hillyer in the role of SVP/Business Modelling. The Global Business Transformation Unit goal is to define future business models globally, regionally and locally and will assess operating models, policies, processes and organization.
