CYNTHIA TURNER'S

CYNOPSIS Kids!
02/02/04

Good morning. It's Monday, February 2, 2004, and this is your early morning Kids! briefing.

Okay, I am not big into football but this years Super Bowl game was actually fun to watch.  And I’m thinking the advertisers who spent $$ on their Super Bowl buys may be disappointed today because they are not likely to be the major post game buzz topic on various game coverage like entertainment news programs, late-night monologues, magazines and newspapers, nor around the water cooler after last night’s half-time show.  It was kind of like the Seinfeld episode where Elaine’s Christmas card shows off a little more of herself than she planned on showing.  Toward the end of a duet performed by Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake as part of the half-time, Timberlake ripped off Ms. Jackson costume showing off a little more than perhaps anyone expected, resulting in the shutting off of the whole compliment of stage lights for those in the stadium while CBS cameras took a quick cut from the scene and didn't ever mention the happening at all.  The event prompted a barrage of viewer complaints to CBS/CBS Sports and apologies from Timberlake, CBS/CBS Sports and MTV who produced the half-time show.

On Friday in the UK the High Court of Justice provided Carlton Communications and Granada with the official sanctioning of the shareholder schemes, which was needed for their proposed merger resulting in one company to be called ITV plc.  With redundancies an obvious result of merging two companies and their staffs, there has not yet been any announcements regarding lay-offs.

Big story, big characters and big sales equal a big book, but does it also equal a two part movie?  Rumors have been sweeping around the internet, in magazines and newspapers concerning Warner Bros.’ movie adaptation, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (HP4), the fourth book installment of author J.K. Rowling HP series, which numbers 734 pages.  Empire Online reports that in an interview featured in the March edition of Empire Magazine, HP3 & the upcoming HP4 director Mike Newell is explains, “As far as I’m concerned it’s absolutely possible to do it in one [movie].  I think it would be slightly embarrassing to do it in two,” according to Empire Online.  Additionally the interview quotes Newell revealing where he plans to go with HP4: “It’s a classic paranoid thriller in a way.”  Apparently Newell spent the holiday watching a number of thriller movies and further explains that in HP4, “What you have is a story at the begging of which the powers of evil have a plan … then this huge notion of competition…. But there is, of course, a malign intelligence which is manipulating things,” followed by a shoot out between the hero and the bad guy.  That’s a really good, strong thriller shape.”

Cartoon Network celebrates Valentine’s Day with Don’t Be My Valentine, a 9-hour marathon airing February 14, (8a-5p).  Hosted by animated character, Johnny Bravo, a self proclaimed girl magnet, the marathon features episodes of many of CN’s series where love just didn't work out as planned, beginning with It’s Valentine’s Day, Johnny Bravo.  Viewers can also participate in the on-air event with at CartoonNetwork.com with Valentine eGreeteings, anti-Valentine cToon digital trading cards and a new Valentine’s Day game.

Between the Lions, the animated preschool series produced by WGBH-TV for PBS Kids, and New Mexico’s Public Television station KNME (serving northern & central NM, there are several others in the state), have received a $745,000 federal grant for an American Indian Head Start Literacy Initiative.  The Initiative proposal was amassed by KNME, WGBH Boston (the producers of BTL) and representatives of numerous Tribes (who along with other tribes have made a commitment to participate in the program).  It is sponsored and supported by New Mexico’s Congress including its Senator Pete Domenici, as well as New Mexico Indian Affairs Dept.’s Cabinet Secretary Bernie Teba and the American Indian Head Start Literacy Initiative.  This project is modeled on BTL’s first outreach to the American Indian community, Between The Lions Mississippi Literary Initiative, conducted in 2001-02 by WGBH Boston and Sirius Thinking, Ltd. in partnership with Mississippi Broadcasting Networks.  The Mississippi initiative was supported under the Ready To Learn TV Program, and funded by the US Dept. of Edu.

National mall-based teen targeted retailer Hot Topic will carry a range of merchandise featuring characters from the online ‘comix’ Paxx iLL (aka Paxx), created by animator Eddie Robison.  The Paxx merchandise like the comix is also designed by Robison, who created the ‘anti-hero’ a year ago to help work out some tribulations.  Paxx is 7 inches tall and ‘lives in this world but is not bound by its laws.”  Paxx spends much of his time on a mission to rid the world of common household insects.’  Character bios, five comix, and a preview of Robison’s animated short film (a work in progress) are at his website www.illfatedinc.com. The Paxx merchandise, some of which will feature Paxx’s semi-evil twin sisters Darken iLL and Kinda iLL (described by Robison as the Hilton Sisters of the underworld with Kung Pao spice and Kung Fu kicks), includes a limited edition figurine, plush doll, an array of accessories, a CD entitled Dancing On Your Grave, and T-Shirts, from manufacturers including Alernatoys, Fun-4-All, and C&D Visionary.  Paxx will debut at the American International Toy Fair, February 15-18, in NYC.

In less than a week, the Recording Academy will announce the winners of the annual Grammy Awards, voted on by professional members of the Academy.  Who do teens think should win?  Harris Interactive has released the findings of a YouthQuery Omnibus survey of 642 US teens 13-18, asking just that question.  Conducted online January 14-19, 2004 the survey presented the teens with four Grammy categories and nominees and the teens chose their favorites in each category.  Below are the results of the survey, which you can compare with the actual winners of The 46th Annual Grammy Awards, schedule for February 8, 2004, live from Staples Center in Los Angeles, on the CBS television network.

In the meantime the Recording Academy is also interested in teens and what music they like as well as educating them about music and the music industry through its Grammy in the Schools program.  To that end the Grammy in the Schools project is currently hosting a 16 stop nationwide tour of its Grammy in the School Careers in Music program, which provides high schoolers with an opportunity to learn about different aspects of the music industry and career options, beyond rock star.  In addition to industry expert panel discussions and career workshops the Foundations has added a survey element with the goal of using group discussion to develop students’ research, debate and other skills.  Some of the industry panel participants include: All-4-One, Melissa Etheridge, David Foster, Jimmy “Jam” Harris, LL Cool J, Branford Marsalis, Curtis Mayfield, Phil Ramone, Linda Ronstadt, Al Schmitt, Alan Silvestri, Don Was, Trisha Yearwood and Faith Hill.

Mary-Ellis Bunim, who with partner Jonathan Murray is credited with creating the modern reality television genre, has died last Thursday in Los Angeles. She was 57.  Bunim-Murray Productions  were the creative minds behind MTV's The Real World, Road Rules, The Love Cruise, Making the Band, Real World Road Rules Challenge and the feature film The Real Cancun.  They were also behind the syndicated daytime series Starting Over and Fox's hit of the current season, The Simple Life.  Prior to her partnership with Jonathan Murray, Mary-Ellis was a production executive overseeing more than 2500 hours of daytime serial television.  A memorial service will be held in Los Angeles at 1PM on Saturday, February 7, 2004, at Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90068.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends honor Mary-Ellis Bunim's memory through contributions to the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund, 1101 17th Street, NW, Suite 1300, Washington D
