CYNOPSIS Kids!
02/04/04

Good morning. It's Wednesday, February 4, 2004, and this is your early morning Kids! briefing.

America Online yesterday launched Red, its new teen (13-17) targeted service, which takes the place of AOL Teens.  Control and customizable are key words in Red’s mission to let teens design and rule their own environment, which includes the regular AOL Welcome Screen is out and ‘customizable experience’ is in. That means the ability for the user to choose and manage what information streams they get through their accounts, and create their own environment with customizable toolbar, new Buddy List IM functions, 10 different desk top looks, 10 content areas and so on.  Additionally there are more teen chat rooms and an increased focus things kids like, besides choosing their own decorations & personal icons, including teen specific music, game and sports areas.  Red has created an online shopping area for teens called My Plastic that provides teens with the chance to buy stuff online via a pre-paid account.  Parents are also part of  Red, and an important component to keeping teens on the service and safe.  Among the parental control options are the ability for parents to check out where their teens are going on-line and what email addresses their kids can get mail from as well as if they can receive any enhanced mail or IMs (e.g. with video).  Why so much attention to teens?  Aside from the fact that teenagers embrace new technology much easier than do adults, teens are also the fastest growing online users with 18 million teens 12-17 online every day growing to a projected 22 million by 2007, according to Jupiter Research.

Citing a source familiar with the situation, The NY Post reported Tuesday that DreamWorks SKG is ‘ramping up to spin off its animation unit’ in order to raise ‘much needed cash while maintaining a lucrative production agreement…’ Furthermore, the Post says DreamWorks ‘is considering a possible initial offering of the division.’  A Dreamworks spokeswoman is quoted in the article explaining, ‘We [DreamWorks] have no plans to spin off the animation unit at this time.’

In an interview with Sci-Fi Wire, Don Hahn, producer of Disney’s CGI movie project Gnomeo and Juliet, said that Elton John and Tim Rice have written songs for the movie.  Hahn also said that Ewan McGregor continues to be on-board as the voice of one of the story’s lead characters.

Those who are currently in their 30s & 40s might view this as a chance to introduce kids of the ‘00s to the real TV of the 1970s, as TV Land hosts Pufnstuf ‘N’ Stuff, a four hour mini-marathon of shows created by Sid & Marty Krofft, February 17, 8p. The marathon includes episodes of Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, Electra Woman & Dyna Girl, Lidsville, Bugaloos, Land of the Lost, and H.R. Pufnstuf.  In conjunction with the mini-marathon event, Rhino Home Video will release, H.R. Pufnstuf-The Complete Series on DVD, February 10, featuring original uncut episodes of the series.  Additionally, TV Land will debut Krofft Kitschen, a late night weekend block, April 9, 12a-2a, Fridays/Saturdays.

Though these games are rated M (Read: not for kids), thought you’d be interested to know that interactive software publisher and developer, Edios announced yesterday it has optioned the film rights to its video game franchise Fear Effect to producer/director Uwe Boll and his production company, BollKG.  Boll has adapted several video games for film including; House of the Dead based on the Sega game and the upcoming Alone in the Dark, based on Atari’s game of the same name, slated for a summer 2004 release.  Edios has had previous success in the area with the movie adaptation of its Tomb Raider games.

Today's Trivia Question:  This 1950's advertising mascot, Bucky Beaver, may not sound at all familiar to many of you, except he was also featured in a scene in the movie Grease.  During the slumber party at Frenchie's house, one of the girls, Jan, stood up in front of the television and sang/acted out the jingle as it appeared on the TV set behind her.  Remembering that scene, what type of product did Bucky Beaver hock?  (To answer the trivia, click here and please remember to include your name, company, city and time zone.  Only the second four  from each time zone will appear in tomorrow's kudos list.)
