Good morning. It's Monday, February 9, 2004, and this is your early morning Kids! briefing.

Dark Horse Comics announced it will purchase manga publishing and production house Studio Proteus under a pending agreement.  Dark Horse has worked with Studio Proteus co-publishing manga since the publication of Dark Horse’s Outlanders in 1988, and together they have produced nearly 60,000 pages of material. The acquisition will also include all Studio Proteus manga previously published with Eclipse and Innovation. Studio Proteus’s Toren Smith will retain the company’s name, and will serve as a consultant for Dark Horse as well as translating select manga titles for them.

Following the completion of Fox’s full length Garfield movie (release June 25, 2004), director Peter Hewitt (Tom & Huck, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey) is set to begin work on the movie The Great Hartford Elementary Heist (Universal) and produced by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s Playtone Productions, as per Daily Variety.  The project initially announced in spring 2003 follows the story of an 11 year old boy and his friends work together on their mission to recover their various personal belongings commandeered by the school principle.

The next generation of video game consoles are poised to outsell all previous video gaming platforms, according to a new Juniper Research report.  Slated to begin rolling out in 2005, from both the usual suspects (Sony, Nintendo & Microsoft) as well as some smaller competitors, the new round of video gaming consoles are expected to take on the world of convergence in a big way by including the addition of various features and functionality, integrated high-speed internet gaming, wireless connectivity between machines and handhelds, and positioning the units as overall home media/entertainment centers.  The report projects that online gaming via video game consoles will reach some 28 million regular users by 2008, with the downloading of new games and levels becoming mainstream, additionally next generation handheld hardware revenues forecasted to reach upwards of $25 billion by 2008.  The obvious wrinkle as we move closer to the 2005 release dates, albeit a short-term issue is the increasing decline in current next generation console sales as consumers put off purchasing a unit until the new consoles are launched.

Electronic Arts and Marvel Enterprises have entered into a multi-year licensing agreement that allows EA to develop a series of fighting video-games pitting Marvel’s superhero against a new set of characters being developed by EA, with the first game slated for release in 2005.  Conversely EA has granted Marvel the exclusive rights as the worldwide licensing agent for all consumer products and media licensees for the new EA characters.  Marvel will publish comic books introducing the new EA characters.

Stephen Tapp, EVP/Television, CHUM Limited, announced a senior management restructuring of Chum Television’s West Coast operations, which will be effective as of March, 1.  Howard Slutsken VP&GM/The New VI in Victoria exits the company to form his own consulting firm serving and he will serve as an exclusive broadcast consultant with Chum TV.  Brad Phillps, currently VP & GM/Citytv, Vancouver has been promoted to the newly created position of VP/Chum Television BC.  In this role Phillips will be responsible for both The New VI and Citytv Vancouver.  Another newly created new position Station Manger for The New VI will report to Phillips, the announcement of that appointment is pending.
