Good morning. It's Tuesday, February 10, 2004, and this is your early morning Kids! briefing.

John Hardman, SVP/Programming, Kids’ WB and Sam Register, SVP/Original Animation, Cartoon Network announced yesterday that The Batman, an all new animated series is being produced by Warner Bros. Animation for Kids’ WB and Cartoon Network.  The series is expected to be available to air on Kids’ WB this fall 2004, according to a Kids’ WB spokesperson, and the series will migrate over to Cartoon Network some time in the first half of 2005.  Based on the DC Comic superhero, the series picks up in year three of the Batman story where Bruce Wayne is in his mid-twenties and learning the ins and outs of balancing his caped crusader activities and identity against the backdrop of his billionaire public persona.  The series’ theme song will be performed by musical artist The Edge, best known as a member of U2.  Celebrities lending their voices to the series, according to published reports, include TVs original live action Batman Adam West voicing the mayor of Gotham City and Gina Gershon as Catwoman.

Coming to a cable MSO near you starting February 11 at 12pm, is a new cable called Real Hip Hop Network, marking itself as the first network to deliver exclusive hip-hop content 24-hours a day. Behind the effort is SSM Media & Entertainment Group, headed by Atonn Muhammed, President/CEO, his partner Bryan Tucker and industry veteran Reese Schonfeld, co-founder of CNN/CNN Headline News and The Food Network. As EVP/Strategy is former MTV/VH1/Nick executive David Houle.  RHN will also tap the expertise of Pseudo Entertainment and reach into their extensive 15,000 volume proprietary video library.  For further info on The Real Hip Hop Network, check out http://www.ssm-media.com/

TechTV has picked up the exclusive North American television rights to Last Exile, the Japanese anime series from Gonzo Entertainment and distributed by Geneon Entertainment (USA) Inc. The network will premiere the series in prime time beginning Monday, March 8 at 10P.  The network adds this anime series to its others featured in its regular late night anime block, Anime Unleashed. 

Nickelodeon’s Nicktoons digital channel will present the US premiere of the animated comedy Corneil and Bernie, Saturday February 21, 8p, its regular time slot with repeats throughout each week.  The series features Corneil, a sophisticated dog who is fluent in several languages and also has the ability to read, count expeditiously all the while protecting anyone from knowing of these talents, until he is found out by his dog sitter Bernie and mayhem ensues.  Corneil and Bernie is produced by Millimages animation studios.

Dark Horse Comics will release the first installment of a new three issue comic book series entitled El Zombo, April 21.  Described as in the vein of stories like My Bodyguard (Fox, 1980) El Zombo is the story of the unlikely friendship between a temperamental undead luchadore wrestler and an equally difficult 10 yr. old girl, Belisa Montoya, from East LA.  El Zombo comes from newcomers Dave Wilkins (artists & co-creator) and Kevin Munroe (writer & co-creator).

The Alternative Press Expo being held in San Francisco Feb. 21 & 22, is expected to draw some 200+ exhibitors this year including comic book publishers.  One of the titles to be showcased at APE is Kid Beowulf, a humorous graphic novel adaptation of the epic poem Beowulf published by Ambition Studios and created by Alexis E. Fajardo, for all ages.

Disney Company Latin American licensee RGB and Spanish and Portuguese language content provider and distributor media company Claxson have signed an agreement making Claxson the Radio Disney 91.9 licensee in Uruguay, which begins  broadcasting from Montevideo 24/7 this month. As the licensee, Claxson will be responsible for the administration and management of Radio Disney FM 91.9.

Thinking of giving a gift certificate to a K6-11 but aren’t sure what store to get one for?  According to a recent national study of 502 Kids 6-11 years old by Opinion Research Corporation, kids in that age demo would prefer to receive:  one from a toy store 29%, book store 24% followed by hobby/sports stores 17%, clothing stores 13%, music stores 7%, restaurants 6%, or jewelry and accessories stores (e.g. hair accessories) receiving 3%, leaving 1% undecided.  Split along older and younger kids by gender, close to half of the boys 6-8 not surprisingly would rather receive a gift certificate from a toy store, while boys 9-11 equally prefer a certificate from a hobby/sports store of toy store.  Book stores and toy stores are about equally-chosen among 6-8 year old girls, while most girls 9-11 prefer a gift certificate from either a book store or clothing store.

Intel and JIF have signed on as national underwriters of the PBS Kids’ math series Cyberchase, which in turn provides funding for marketing efforts that will focus on math literacy, and the idea of presenting math and problem solving cool to school-age kids.  In the promotional support arena Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s restaurants in the US, and its territories, as well as Mexico, the Philippines, Bahrain, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Egypt, Korea, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait will offer Cyberchase kids meals beginning the middle of February.  The schedule for the kids meal program has them distributed in between other license-based promotions, ‘typically one week at a time,’ throughout the year.   The kids meal program will be supported on Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s Cool Kids Website and is expected to deliver 3 million Cyberchase themed premiums to 3,000 participating stores.  Additionally, following Paradise Press, Inc.’s release of two Cyberchase activity books at Wal-Mart last month, the publisher is slated to release several more books in Wal-Mart, Dollar Tree, Walgreen’s and other retail stores next month

Mongoose Publishing has licensed Starship Troopers and will introduce a series of graphic novels, a role-playing game and for a collectible miniatures wargame.  The graphic novels will be released throughout this year and on, with the role-playing game scheduled for a 4th qtr 2004 debut and the miniatures wargame slated for the beginning of 2005 when it will be released in a box-set including a rule book and mini-plastic and metal playing pieces and followed by additional sets also in 2005.

Toynami has acquired the action figures licenses for Inuyasha (Adult Swim on Cartoon Network) and the anime and manga series Chobits (DVD).  The prototypes for the new Inuyasha line will be shown off at Toynami’s showroom at the International Toy Fair in NYC, February 15-18.  Additionally, Toynami will feature the anticipated Voltron: Defender of the Universe toyline as well as new additions to its Robotech line including Robotech Masterpiece Collection: Alpha Fighter series.

This week Burger King launches its Fairly OddParents promotion, based on characters from the Nickelodeon animated series of the same name.  The promotion features ten different character figures including Timmy Turner, Cosmo and Wanda and is scheduled to run through March 14.

Jakks pacific, Inc. has entered into a worldwide licensing agreement with Marvel Enterprises to market and distribute TV games products based on the Spider-Man property.  Jakks TV Games is a gaming concept that lets users play the its games on any TV set with the use of a character based hand-held device.  The TV Games controller houses all of the hardware needed to play the games and can hold five original Spider-Man games, according to Jakks Pacific all the consumer has to do is plug the TV Games game into the audio/visual (A/V) jack of a standard TV set, turn on the set and play (

Launching this week is The Baby Source (www.thebabysource.com), a new website that intends to provide new and expecting parents with answers their questions about pregnancy, birth and parenting.  The Baby Source will also provide product information and where to find them on the web, as well as links to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and other resources.  Future plans for the site include a baby forum and a blog.
