CYNTHIA TURNER'S CYNOPSIS
Kids! 02/11/04
Good morning. It's
Wednesday, February 11, 2004,
and this is your early morning
Kids!
briefing.
With the advent of shifting viewing habits of kids, which includes the
use of TiVo, more channel options (multi-plexing), and increased
viewership by kids of cable nets not ad supported, the never ending new
technology (which kids take to and learn with ease), online streaming
video advertising is where its at. Beginning this week on
Nick.com kids are seeing some of their first :15 & :30
second online streaming video ads from Starcom USA clients Lego,
Kellogg’s and Nintendo, according to an Adweek.com report.
These streaming video ads are the first to specifically target the kid
demo. The upfront season is nearly upon us, with the majority of the
presentations from ad supported/kid targeted networks completed by mid
March. With that in mind, as well as reports that online ad spending is
on the rise (up about 14% to $4.7 billion through September 2003,
according to TNS Media Intelligence/CMR and they project a continuing
growth of just over 12% this year), combined with more and more
kids/teens and adults going online, Adweek writer Megan Larson concludes
that despite the difficulty in placing a value on online-streaming video
ads, ‘[the ads] could ultimately carry a higher CPM than TV in certain
situations.’
On September 21 Lucasfilm Ltd. and Fox Home Entertainment
will release the Star Wars trilogy on DVD in the US and
Canada. The four disc set includes, Star Wars Episode IV: A New
Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the
Jedi, as well as special bonus features including a feature-length
documentary about the Star Wars saga and never-before-seen footage from
the making of all three films. The sound and picture on each of the three
Star Wars Trilogy films has been digitally restored and re-mastered by
THX.
Showtime has acquired the international kid’s series The
Magicians House from the BBC. The series will have its
US premiere on Showtime’s FamilyZone this spring. Based on the
fantasy novels from UK author William Corlett, The Magician’s House tells
the story of three kids (Mary, William & Alice) who are spending
their vacation with Mary’s dad who lives in the Golden Valley of
Wales. While there the kids meet up with a time traveling Magician
(Ian Richardson) who enlists their help to help protect the valley from
imminent danger
The Simpsons crew are headed for the big screen, but don’t
worry you don’t have to get off the couch just yet, we’re talking
2006 for a release date. In an interview with
www.DVDFantatic.com
writer/producer Mike Reiss says “They've wanted to do this since season two. It’s been 13 years of wanting to do ‘The Simpsons’ Movie. Finally FOX said, ‘Let’s just do it!’ We never had the greatest idea that was compelling but FOX said, ‘Maybe if we start paying you, you'll get inspired.’ And sure enough it worked! We’ve got a very good and interesting idea and it’s different from the show.”
Kids’ WB! will mark Saturday, February 14, with Valen-TEEN’s Day, 8a-12p, which will feature wrap-around segments to be hosted by Teen Titans who will offer up relationship advice, gift giving tips and poetry. The morning also kicks-off a new programming line-up for the block. The new line-up is as follows: 8a-Jackie Chan Adventures; 8:30a-Static Shock (new time); 9a-Teen Titans; 9:30a-Xiaolin Showdown; 10a & 10:30a-Pokemon Advanced (two eps); 11a-Yu-Gi-Oh: Enter the Shadow Realm; 11:30a-¡MUCHA LUCHA! Based on the success of this Battlestar Galactica miniseries that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel this past December, the network has placed a series order for 13 one-hour episodes the space drama. The Battlestar Galactica cast and crew are now in warp speed and pre-production on the series which begins production this March in Vancouver. The new series picks up just a few days after where the mini-series left off and will star the same main cast members with; Edward James Olmos (Adama), Mary McDonnell (Laura Roslin), Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck) and Tricia Helfer (Number Six). Also returning is the mini-series Exec. Prod. and writer Ronald D. Moore (Carnivale, Rosewall, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Mission Impossible 2).
As the FCC and the Senate prepare for today's hearings on the proposed Broadcast Decency Enforcement Act of 2004 (C-Span3 and www.c-span.org), FCC Chairman Michael Powell turns his attention to cable. According to the Wall Street Journal, Powell sent a letter to Robert Sachs, NCTA, which read in part that cable "has given rise to more opportunities for the worst programming to invade our living rooms" and while the focus of recent events "has been on broadcast programming, I believe the cable industry cannot completely ignore the discontent." Sachs responded with his own letter outlining the efforts cable has put into informing consumers of family friendly programming, while also stating the NCTA recognizes there is still work to be done. At the moment, the FCC has no jurisdiction over content on cable, since it is a paid medium, brought into the home by paying consumers. However, Congress could chose to change that, particularly given the heat since the Super Bowl.
You know Regis and Millionaire is returning to primetime, albeit briefly. The game has been changed slightly. The money begins at $1000 instead of $100; the final pot is $10 million (up from the original $1 million) and two additional lifelines have been added. You'll recall the phone a friend, poll the audience, and 50/50. The two new ones are Three Wise Men - literally three people sequestered back stage who are particularly brilliant in three different fields, have 30 seconds to talk among themselves before provided their best guess answer to the contestant. The second new lifeline is called Double Dip wherein the contestant is given two shots at a single question, and when used in conjunction with 50/50 is a guarantee correct answer. Super Millionaire begins 2/22 at 9p. Though many young'ins like to watch the show as well, the remaining four episodes are scheduled for 10p.

Old Navy has opened up the call for an ad agency to partner with its in-house ad group on creative direction and has hired Pile & Co. to oversee the review process, as per AdAge. Beginning next month in Japan, Bandai will launch Tamagotchi Plus, the next generation of virtual pets. This time around, Tamagotchi Plus can communicate, play and make friends (not to mention reproduce) via infrared technology on each unit. In May 1997 Bandai America introduced the egg shaped virtual pet phenomenon called Tamagotchi to the US. The concept of the Tamagotchi provide kids/users with the experience of having a pet that needed to be digitally fed and nurtured in order for it to evolve and take on different characteristics and shapes. Within the first month of the US debut of Bandai had sold 3.5 million Tamagotchi, with worldwide sales rising to some 40 million units. You may also recall that Tamagotchi caused quite a stir in schools as kids were continually prompted through audio sounds made by their virtual pet to provide food, attention and the like throughout the day.
