Kids! 02/20/04
Good morning. It's
Friday, February 20, 2004,
and this is your early morning
Kids!
briefing.
Nickelodeon’s President’s Day premiere of The Fairly OddParents’
first primetime special, The Fairly OddParents’ Big Superhero Wish
(2/16, 8p) conjured up 5 million total viewers; the series’ biggest
audience to date, and an increase of +27% over the net's
holiday event last year, Jimmy Neutron's President's Day Dance Party. The special, which featured Jay Leno as the voice of superhero,
the Crimson Chin, earned a K2-11 (10.2) and 3.2 million kid
viewers, up 11% vs. last year. The Fairly OddParents special also set
series records for K6-11 (11.7/2.3 million kid viewers) and Tweens 9-14
(9.0/1.8 million tweens viewers).
Sony Pictures Animation, a division of Sony Pictures Digital, is
set to begin production on its first feature length CGI movie,
Open Season. Celebrities signed on to lend their voices to
the movie’s character include, Martin Lawrence, Ashton Kutcher and Debra
Messing. Open Season is the story of a mismatched duo; Boog
(Lawrence), a 900 pound domesticated Grizzly bear and Elliot (Kutcher), a
scrawny, on-horned mule deer who find themselves stranded together in the
forest during hunting season. Boog and Elliot come up with a plan
to turn the tables on the hunters, which requires them work together to
enlist and organize all of the forest animals. Messing plays the
part of Beth a forest ranger who rescued Boog when he was a cub and
raised him. The story is based on the humor of syndicated
cartoonist Steve Moore, who will serve as Exec. Producer along with John
Carls. The digital animation will be provided by Sony Pictures
Imageworks, currently working on the CGI adaptation of the children's
book, The Polar Express, with Robert Zemeckis; and Spider-Man 2.
Open Season will be directed by Jill Culton (original story Monsters,
Inc; development/creative Monsters Inc., Toy Story, Toy Story 2, A Bug’s
Life), with Anthony Stacchi (creative team for Curious George, Antz,
James & the Giant Peach) serving as co-Director
As the week comes to a close the animated rumor divining rod has
been pointing in the direction of Sony Pictures as in discussions
with Pixar Animation Studios. But, neither side has given
any indication they are in discussions, nor have they given indications
they are not.
As Toy Fair 2004 week winds down, I have just one word,
Levitron!!! What is a Levitron? It is a puzzle of sorts, which
challenges you to find that one place where the Levitron top can spin in
midair, floating, hovering or levitating over a magnetic base, and let me
share with you this is much more difficult than it looks. Even if you
don’t have an addictive personality, I dare you to walk away from the
darn thing without having achieved your goal. The basic concept, and
because I did not listen in physics class this is clearly not a
scientific explanation, is like the feeling when you try to put two
magnets that are polar opposites together, either one of them flips over
and or if you are trying to push them together you can feel the magnets
pushing back. The Levitron toy products are the invention of physicist
Bill Hones (clearly he was listening in physics class) who
patented the product in the 1980s. The concept of spinning to help
provide a stable existence for the top in midair was discovered Roy M.
Harrigan many moons ago. The Levitron is manufactured by Fascination Toys
and Gifts. www.levtron.com

strict and watchful eye on the hip hop group Da Band while working to
promote their debut album. The band also takes up residence in P.
Diddy’s NYC apartment. The Making the Band 2 premiere will kick-off with
a marathon of previous episodes beginning Sunday, February 29th,
1p.
Carlton International and Spain’s Zinkia Entertainment have
partnered with Novel Entertainment to develop and co-produce
Pocoyo, a CGI animated series targeted to preschoolers. The

new things and places in the world around him with his friends Pato, a
shy yellow duck; Elly, a graceful pink elephant; Lula, Pocoyo’s puppy;
and Sleep Bird, a large bird that is a very good sleeper. Novel will
develop the characters and scripts, as well as the casting for the
series, which was commissioned by Steven Andrew, Controller/Children’s
Programs, ITV.
