CYNTHIA TURNER'S

CYNOPSIS Kids!
02/24/04

Good morning. It's Tuesday, February 24, 2004, and this is your early morning Kids! briefing.

Franchise Pictures has entered into a co-production and distribution partnership with Story Island Entertainment, Origin Entertainment LLC (operating under the new trademark Canyonlight Entertainment), and Entertainment Business Group for an $80 million feature film adaptation of the adventure/fantasy book series The Runelords, from author David Farland (the pen name of David Wolverton), the first of three pictures.  A director will be announced shortly, with that said The Runelords is slated to begin production this June in Prague.  The Runelords (1997) is the first book in the four book series, followed by Brotherhood of the Wolf, Wizardborn, and book four The Lair of Bones published fall 2003, by Tor, a unit of St. Martin’s Press. Wolverton has written 20+ sci-fi fiction novels, including the best selling novels based on the Star Wars and The Mummy franchises.  Entertainment Business Group will also oversee international sales, electronic games and merchandising.  Warner Bros. will distribute the movie domestically as part of their agreement with Franchise Pictures.

Whoopi Goldberg and Hyperion Books for Children’s imprint Jump at the Sun, have entered into a multi-book publishing deal.  The actress/comedian is also known as a vocal advocate of reading and literacy for kids and she has worked with several literacy organizations including First Book. Penned by Whoopi, the books will reflect her style and humor and are slated to hit stores in fall 2005.  In a statement Whoopi explained that, "If I can give kids and their parents something that'll make them smile and maybe teaches them a little something about living with one another on our planet, it makes me a happy granny."  This is not Whoopi’s first kid’s book; in 1992 Bantam published her book Alice.  Jump at the Sun has the distinction of being the first African American kid’s book imprint that features all genres from pictures books through young adult fiction.  Jump at the Sun authors include; Toni Morrison, bell hooks (Happy to be Nappy), Andrea Davis Pinkney (Let it Shine), Brian Pinkney (In the Time of the Drums) and Quincy Troupe (Miles: The Autobiography).

Some time ago you heard about UPN's new reality show in development which focuses on the Amish right of passage called rumspringa wherein teenagers venture out into the non-Amish world for a period of time to decide if the Amish lifestyle is one they prefer to live.  The majority return, but a few take to the outside world.  The UPN show follows five Amish teens as they come to the city and live in an apartment with five non-Amish, mainstream, outside world, teenagers in a sort of Real World lifestyle.  According to Broadcasting & Cable, this proposed summer reality show has drawn the criticism of Rep. Joe Pitts (R-PA) as well as numerous others on the Hill who have written to Mel Karmazin and Leslie Moonves saying, in part:
  • "For almost three centuries, the Amish have lived the way they do out of Christian piety and conviction, not out of ignorance. If, by producing this show, you fail to respect that, you will be opening yourself up to charges of bigotry."
UPN responded with:
  • "Through every step of the process, UPN and the show’s producers have every intention of treating the Amish, their beliefs, and their heritage with the utmost respect and decency. Any young Amish adults who do choose to participate in this reality show will do so only of their own free will and with absolutely full knowledge of the content, nature and intent of the program. And since this show is still early in the development stage, we sincerely hope that any judgment will be reserved until the show is produced."

On March 2…
1923, Time Magazine goes on sale for the very first time.
1933, King Kong has its NYC premiere
1962, Wilt Chamberlain, of the Philadelphia 76ers, scores 100 points in a single game, as the 76’ers played against the New York Knicks, and breaking lots of records Playing for the
1994, Springfield Massachusetts native, Theodor Seuss Geisel, best known as Dr. Seuss, was born.  Next Tuesday would have been his 100th birthday and in honor of the anniversary of his birth, 2004 has been dubbed Seussentennial and will to feature numerous celebrations of the works of Dr. Seuss (the official website
www.seussville.com/seussentennial/index) including:
  • WAM! salutes Dr. Seuss on March 2 with a multiple plays of two movies adapted from his stories: The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T (1953)(3/2 8a, 6p, 10:45p) and Universal’s recent live action version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, you know the one with Jim Carrey (3/2 12p, 9p; 3/3 12:15a).  The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T is a favorite of mine, if not simply for the scenery alone, then for the performance of actor Hans Conried and Tommy Rettig, who plays the boy Bart in the movie.
  • US Postal Service will issue a $.37 postage stamp featuring Dr. Seuss surrounded by illustrations of six of his characters; The Cat in the Hat, the Grinch, the Glotz (from Oh Say Can You Say, 1979), the Skritz, the anonymous ‘young fellow’ and the Skrink both from I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew (1965).
  • The National Education Association’s Read Across America will remembers Dr. Seuss on March 2, as they have for the past six years, with the 7th annual Read Across America, which will feature readings of Seuss’ books across the country by teachers, parents, a park ranger at Mt. Rushmore, coal miners in West Virginia, who will this year don The Cat in the Hat’s signature red and white hat.  The NEA began its Read Across American began in 1998 as a way to get kids excited about reading.
  • Universal releases Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat on DVD/VHS, March 16, the one with Mike Myers.  Extras on the DVD include 16 scenes omitted from the final version of the movie, outtakes and bloopers, a behind the scenes look at the making of the Dr. Seuss US postage stamp, how they made the D.I.R.T. machine etc.
