CYNOPSIS Kids!
02/25/04

Good morning. It's Wednesday, February 25, 2004, and this is your early morning Kids! briefing.

According to a new report issued by the American Psychological Association, advertising targeted to kids under 9 should be restricted.  One of the reports co-author says this age group does not have the ability to, "comprehend the information contained in television commercials uncritically, accepting most advertising claims and appeals as truthful, accurate and unbiased."  The report also places blame for the youth obesity problems in the US, at least in part, on the advertising industry, which perpetuates poor eating habit in the ads it creates for the kid audience.  The report also suggests that advertising targeted to kids is "inherently unfair" and that the 9 and under crowd are "uniquely vulnerable." In fact, the report specifically highlights television and internet advertising as the two largest offenders.   The NY Times article on this topic points out, the advertising industry is not without its own checks and balances with, "… a self-regulatory process for children's advertising as well as general advertising, involving the Council of Better Business Bureaus; in instances when advertisers refuse to satisfactorily resolve complaints, they are referred to the Federal Trade Commission.’  A significant portion of kids under 9 fall into the preschool demo and the TV industry has that area pretty well covered with preschool specific programming blocks and the corresponding websites, all running without commercials.  As far as our kids are concerned, we all know we can’t keep kids hermetically sealed, and that is where setting limits comes in.  And while parents don't like to be the TV police, there are always options and one of them is to turn the television off.  For those who say that sounds easy, they're right.

New Line Cinema has completed a deal for the movie adaptation of German young adult fantasy book author Cornelia Funke’s (The Thief Lord) book Inkheart, according to Daily Variety.  Inkheart is the first in a trilogy, the second title has already been released in Germany, with the English version slated for release next year, and might I add the kids and I are ready and waiting.

IDT Entertainment and Archie Comics Entertainment, LLC announced yesterday that IDT Entertainment has acquired a 5% equity interest in Archie Comics Entertainment, LLC. Breakthrough Animation, the newly-established animation production, marketing and distribution division of Canadian producer Breakthrough Films & Television, has named Joy Tashjian Marketing Group, LLC as the worldwide licensing representation for its animated series Atomic Betty.  Breakthrough Animation recently inked a deal with Cartoon Network US to air Atomic Betty, additionally, the series has been licensed for broadcast to more than 40 territories worldwide.  Atomic Betty is produced by Breakthrough Animation Inc. and Atomic Cartoons with Tele-Images Kids in association with Teletoon Canada and the participation of the Shaw Fund and the Canadian Television Fund.

UK producer Talent Kids, a division of Talent Television, has formed a strategic alliance with Canadian producer/distributor, Amberwood Entertainment.  Under the terms of the agreement both companies have a first look arrangement on future animated & live action kids' programming in development at either Company.
