CYNTHIA TURNER'S

CYNOPSIS Kids!
03/01/04

Good morning. It's Monday, March 1, 2004, and this is your early morning Kids! briefing.

The 76th Annual Academy Awards were handed out last night in LA, with few surprises, except maybe for Bill Murray, who was favored to win in the best actor category for his role in Lost in Translation, only to lose to Sean Penn for his role in Mystic River.  Returning as host this year was Billy Crystal who was funny and irreverent who explained after Lord of the Rings: Return of the King had won a clump of its 11 awards of the evening, ‘It’s official, there’s no one left in New Zealand to thank,” Crystal followed that up later after another win for Lord of the Rings, ‘People are moving to New Zealand just to be thanked.’  And expressing what many have thought over the years, Will Ferrell and Jack Black sang a ditty of advice/warning to Oscar winners, which included the lyrics (paraphrasing here) ‘Your time is through. You’re borrrring. You’re rambling on, no end in sight. You’re borrrring. No need to thank your parakeet.  You’re borrrring.  Look at Catherine Zeta-Jones, she’s snorrrring…etc.’ By the way the only other two movies to win 11 Oscars were Ben Hur (nominated in 12 categories, 1959) and Titanic (nominated in 14 categories, 1997).

Oscar Winners for PG-13 include:
Best Animated Feature Film: Finding Nemo (Buena Vista)
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (New Line), for Best Picture, Director, Art Direction, Costume Design, Film Editing, Make-Up, Music Original Score, Music Original Song (Into the West, music/lyrics Fran Walsh/Howard Shore and Annie Lennox), Sound Mixing, Visual Effects, Adapted Screenplay.
Officer and Commander: The Far Side of the World (Fox): Cinematography, Sound Editing.

Discovery Kids officially begins its search for twenty tweens (12-15) contestants today to take part in the third season of its reality based competition series Endurance, which airs Saturday mornings on Discovery Kids on NBC (11:30a) and several times during the week on Discovery Kids.  Those who think that they have got what it takes to spend two weeks in a remote destination where they will undergo a variety of physical and mental tests of endurance can either call the Discovery Kids toll-free number (1-800-PICK-Me-1) or go to
http://kids.discovery.com/fansites/endurance/endurance.html.  Would be participants will need to send in a video (under 5 min.) explaining why they think they are up to such a challenge.  The Endurance season three application deadline is April 12 of this year.

BKS Entertainment’s series The Dooley and Pals Show (39 x :30) is available for broadcast beginning April 2004.  The mixed live action & 3D animated preschool series about an alien named Dooley ran on PBS stations briefly between April 2000-April 2003 (not all stations aired all episodes).  The series aired in full on the ETV’s network of 11 TV stations in South Carolina.

Child Magazine has announced the results of its survey to find the top family friendly restaurant chains in the US.  The survey (available at http://www.child.com and in the April issue of Child, on stands March 24) was based on ‘strict criteria and data’ collected over the course of the five month survey of 125 kid’s menus of the biggest full-service, sit-down chain restaurants.  Each menu was evaluated on the following criteria: did the menu contain at least two to four nutritional entrees; were vegetables, besides french fries, included (salad was offered on 19% of menus); and was milk one of the beverage choice (100% of the restaurants offered soda, only 67% offered milk).  Additionally, each menu was assessed by five nutritional experts who gave each menu a score, which were then averaged and accounted for 75% of a given restaurants grade.  The remaining 25% of the grades were based on kid-friendly activities, its smoking policy, participation in kid’s charities and schools, and access to high chairs, booster seats, and diaper-changing tables in women’s/men’s restrooms.  Based on those criteria only 20 menus fit the minimum requirements.
