CYNOPSIS Kids!
09/27/04

Good morning. It's Monday, September 27, 2004, and this is your early morning Kids! briefing.

China will get more MTV and Nickelodeon with a series of new deals and plans unveiled by Viacom, Chairman/CEO, Sumner R. Redstone at a press conference in Guangzhou Province this past Friday, including a strategic partnership with Beijing Television, expansion plans for the 24/7 MTV service in the Guangdong Province and across China in general, as well as extending its Nickelodeon programming agreement with China Central TV.  Commenting on the deals/plans Redstone said, ‘As the only global brand with a 24-hour channel in China, MTV China’s expansion in Guangdong – China’s most important regional advertising market – is critical to our business development and paves the way for continued growth of MTV’s 24-hour service in China.’
  • MTV China (24/7 service) will see the tripling of its distribution within Guangdong Province by the end of this year, while the 24hr service will also extend its reach to nearly 10m HHs across China.  MTV China will also launch a locally produced HIV/AIDS prevention campaign.
  • Viacom’s partnership with BTV will produce Chinese language music & entertainment programming for distribution to BTV’s channels, and to other channels across China, as well as globally.
  • Viacom is extending its agreement with CCTV for Nickelodeon animated programming airing on the Chinese broadcaster’s kids channel, which began airing Nick’s animated series in March 2004.
  • Viacom content partnership, this deal follows the company’s announcement in March of China’s first production joint venture through Shanghai Media Group (SMG), to create Chinese language kids programming for distribution in China and abroad.

Paramount Pictures has optioned the worldwide movie rights to Midway Games’ videogame, Fear & Respect, a game that is currently being developed by writer/director John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Shaft).  Christine Peters (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days) will work with the game developer to produce the film, though the announcement did not include any details about how much or little Singleton would be involved with the movie project.  Fear & Respect is a 3rd person urban/action adventure game that takes place in the urban world of South Central LA, and follows the story of ‘a young man who has to make survival choices in the urban world of Los Angeles: Does he survive by inspiring fear, or does he survive by inspiring respect in the characters he encounters-and what lessons does he teach by his actions?’  The player is responsible for making decisions for the protagonist of the game, which of course influence what happens during the game as well as how it ends up.  Fear & Respect is currently slated for release in 4Q 2005 for PS2 and Xbox.  No ESRB ratings available as of this point.
