Good Morning, it's  Wednesday, February 7, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Jeff Zucker has officially been appointed President/CEO of NBC Universal, following Bob Wright who served in this capacity for 21 years and who will remain as a GE Vice Chairman. Jeff, 41, has responsibility for the strategic direction and operations of all NBC Universal properties. The appointment became effective with the announcement yesterday.  Wright will retain his Chairmanship of the NBC Universal internal board, tho will turn that seat over to fellow board-member GE Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Immelt in May.  In a press conference yesterday Zucker said he wants to continue the momentum NBC has building now in primetime, as well as continue to develop NBC's multiplatform strategies.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Major League Soccer has announced its 2007 regular season schedule on its television partner networks: ABC, ESPN, Univision, Fox Soccer Channel, Fox Sports en Español and HDNet. The 12th season begins April 7 live on ABC at 330p and will conclude with the live MLS Cup 2007 airing November 18 on ABC at noon. Animal Planet scored with the cute quotient Sunday afternoon for its Super Bowl counter programming stunt Puppy Bowl III. The romping puppies, the Tailgate Show and the half-time show featuring playful kittens had more than 7.5 million unique 2+ viewers tuning in during the night (3p-3a).

Showtime has ordered up a fifth season of Penn & Teller: Bullshit!, with the first of ten new half hour episodes scheduled for March 22 at 10p. Each episode tackles a single topic, often controversial, often top of mind.  The first episode, titled The Obesity Myth, takes a closer look at the epidemic and who they suggest is truly behind it; the second episode shines the light on Wal-Mart.  This series is produced by Wolper Organization and Star Price Prods.

Showcasing visual arts in high-definition and part of the VOOM HD Networks available on Dish Network, Gallery HD will add a new Sunday afternoon programming block called Opera and an Omelet, an 11-week series of well-known operas beginning February 18 at noon. The operas, which include Otello, Don Giovanni, Barber of Seville plus others, have been acquired from BBC Worldwide and will contain English subtitles.

Starting this March, the new V-me (comes from "veme" or "see me") will be a 24-hour digital national Spanish-language broadcast network presented by public television stations and carried on basic digital cable and satellite.  V-me is the first venture announced by newly-formed media production and distribution company, V-me Media Inc., and headed up by president Carmen DiRienzo. At launch, V-me will be in markets representing over 60% of all U.S. Hispanic homes and carried in approximately 50 million U.S. homes.  More info on this in today's edition of Cynopsis International & Multicultural Edition, which you can read here.


~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

TLC is already in production for a new reality series, currently called The Petra Nemcova Project, and promises to be a tougher model-wannabe series, where the contestants are vying for a contract with a NYC modeling agency. The project is from 24/7 Prods and the Mottola Co, with Tommy Mottola and Dave Broome.  Host Petra Nemcova is a supermodel, and is also a survivor of the 2004 Asian tsunami.

Comcast is teaming up with RJ Cutler to produce a new series called Facebook Diaries, taking stories and videos from the social network Facebook, and producing a 10-part series.  Cutler would put a Facebook video thru his professional editing suite, and then the episodes will be offered both online at Facebook and Comcast's own Ziddio website, but also as a VOD offering to Comcast subscribers.  Facebook currently has upwards of 16 million users, the majority under 30, who may contribute videos for potential use in the series.

CBS has cast Harold Perrineau in its drama pilot Demons, from CBS Paramount Network TV.  The story is about Gus, a former priest who performs exorcisms; Perrineau will play Mitch, a priest who is a friend and former colleague of Gus.  You know Perrineau from his role on two seasons of Lost as the single father, Michael Dawson.


~ BROADBAND & DIGITAL ~

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is offering a test version of its new video download service that contains more than 3,000 titles from all the major movie studios. Available through Wal-Mart's web site, users can download movies or TV episodes for playback on computers or portable media players for $1.96 per TV show and up to $19.88 for new movies. Wal-Mart's movie studio partners include 20th Century Fox, Disney, Lions Gate, MGM, MTV Networks, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Warner Bros. as well as television networks Comedy Central, FOX and Nickelodeon. In addition, Wal-Mart will make new movies available for download the same day they are released on DVD. In offering this new download option, Wal-Mart is going head-to-head with other industry leaders in the category such as Apple Inc.'s iTunes and Amazon.com's Unbox.
 
Not to be outdone, Amazon.com and Tivo will make an announcement today that they are teaming up to help users download movies and television series, via the Amazon Unbox.  The service will be available to Tivo owners purchasing their digital download at Unbox.  Once the download is made, the shows/movies can be stored, paused, fast forwarded and rewinded, exactly the same as Tivo users can with regular TV fare. The service will begin testing today, and will be broadly available in the next few weeks. Content providers who are supplying Unbox include CBS, Warner Bros., Fox, Paramount, Sony and Universal Studios, and thus far the majority have also agreed to participate in the Tivo service.


~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Fox Networks Group has named Jack Kennedy as SVP/Corporate Development and Sarah Harden as SVP/Business Development, Fox Cable Networks. Based in Los Angeles, both executives will report to Michael Lang, EVP/Business Development and Strategy, Fox Networks Group.
 
Patricia A. Liguori
has been upped to SVP/Research and Electronic Measurement for ABC Owned Television Stations Group. Taking on this new position immediately, Patricia reports to Walter Liss, President, ABC Owned Television Stations Group.
 
BIAP Inc. (Broadband Interactive Applications), an iTV media company, has added Julie Roehm and Mike Boyd to the company's Board of Directors. Julie was most recently the SVP/Marketing Communications at Wal-Mart and Mike was a Co-Founder of QVC, Inc. and President until 1994.
 
Paul "Schmidi" Schmidman has been elevated to President of CenterStaging Corp. in addition to his current position as COO. He is based at the company headquarters in Burbank, CA. The company's Board of Directors approved Paul's new role as well as electing former president, Johnny Caswell as Chairman of the Board and present CEO, Roger Paglia as Vice Chairman of the Board.
 
The Walt Disney Company has integrated a new sales, marketing and promotion division for its kid and family television, publishing, online and radio platforms called Disney Media Advertising Sales and Marketing Group and has promoted Tricia Wilber as EVP to head the division. Tricia will report to the leaders of three business units: Rich Ross, President, Disney Channel Worldwide; Steve Wadsworth, President, Walt Disney Internet Group; and Russell Hampton, President, Disney Publishing Worldwide.
 
Jonathan Taylor has been made VP/Public Relations at Starz Media and will have overall supervision for press and public relations efforts at the programming production and distribution company. Jonathan will be based at the company's Burbank headquarters and will report to Tom Southwick, SVP/Corporate Communications.
 
Paul Brake has joined National Geographic Channel (NGC) as VP/Finance where his duties include the recording of all financial transactions, preparing analyses and forecasts for the network, and coordinating the network's annual budget. He will report to Laureen Ong, President. In addition NGC has bumped David Mitchell to Manager/Finance with oversight for all network programming and affiliate finances.

Monday - A18-49 AnalysisCBS won competitive Monday night with a 5.0/12 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. In #2 was NBC at 4.8/12, and then FOX 4.6/11, ABC 3.3/8, UNIV 1.8/4, CW 1.2/3 and TELE 0.5/1. Starting off, NBC came in first at 8p with Deal or No Deal at 5.0/12. NBC bested the rest at 9p, too, with Heroes coming in at 6.4/14.  CBS's premiere of Rules of Engagement earned a 5.2/12, just three share points behind NBC, and dropping six tenths of a rating point from it's 2-1/2 Men leadin.  Then at 10p, CBS was on top with CSI: Miami once again delivering a 5.7/14.
