It's Wednesday, February 7, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing. With its kid TV ad-sales upfront set for tomorrow in NYC, Disney has unveiled Disney Media Advertising Sales and Marketing Group, its new ad-sales and promotions entity for its kid and family targeted multi-platform business, which includes TV, online, radio and publishing. Tricia Wilber has been upped to EVP and will lead the integrated group. Wilber will report to division heads, Rich Ross, President/Disney Channel Worldwide; Steve Wadsworth, President/Walt Disney Internet Group; and Russell Hampton, President/Disney Publishing Worldwide. Nickelodeon launched its new live-action comedy The Naked Brothers Band with back-to-back episodes this past Saturday, February 3 at 8:30p and 9p, together reaching 4.7 million total viewers, and providing the network with its highest-rated series premiere in seven years among K6-11 averaging 2.0 million. The two episode premieres also punched in as the top shows in their time periods versus broadcast and cable TV with both Kids and Tweens. The two episodes are available on iTunes as of yesterday. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will announce nominations for the Children’s Programming categories of the Daytime Emmy Awards this afternoon at the KidScreen Summit in New York City. NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT In Canada, The Family Channel has picked up The Latest Buzz (13x22’), a new live-action tween-targeted series from Decode Entertainment. DHX Media Ltd., the indie international TV producer/distributor and Decode’s parent company, will hold the worldwide distribution rights to the property. The project, previously titled Glimmer, revolves around a magazine titled Teen Buzz that makes a move to let teens actually run the periodical. MORE KIDS STUFF This week marks the HarperCollins’ release of Out of the Ballpark ($16.99), a new kids book by New York Yankee AROD (aka Alex Rodriguez) and illustrator Frank Morrison. The book is available in hardcover in both an English language and Spanish language version. AROD is on tour promoting the book. The presses are working at a faster clip in order to move up the publishing dates for several books about Barbaro, the Kentucky Derby winning colt, following his death last week, according to Publishers Weekly. Among the books in the works is Barbaro: America’s Horse, from Aladdin, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. Written by Shelley Fraser Mickle, Aladdin had originally slated the book for release April 10, 2007, but the publisher has moved that date up and the book is now expected to be available at retail by March 13. The book will include mention of Barbaro’s passing. In May of last year Barbaro became as well known for his will to survive a life threatening leg injury that occurred during the running of the Preakness Stakes, and ensuing complications, as well as his ability to win. MARKETING/LICENSING DIC Entertainment has named Mattel as the Master Toy Partner for its new tween girl targeted brand SPG: The Slumber Party Girls. Mattel will develop a new line of toys across a range of categories including dolls, accessories, play sets, and DVD games, which will debut at retail in 2008. Cartoon Network Enterprises has awarded D3Publisher of America, Inc. the interactive game rights to its animated series Ben 10. Under the deal D3PA has worldwide publishing rights to develop and publish console, handheld and PC games based on the Ben 10 series. The first Ben 10 interactive video game is scheduled for release in fall 2007. Through previous deals with Cartoon Network, D3PA has produced games for Nintendo’s GBA and DS platforms based on the network’s animated series Hi Hi PuffyAmiYumi. Animation Collective has named Picture Box Distribution and Small Screen Distribution as international sales agents for its animated series Ellen’s Acres. Picture Box will handle broadcast and home video sales for the series in Canada, Europe, Middle East and Africa. Meanwhile, Small Screen will oversee broadcast and home video sales in Asia as well as Latin American sales via subagent Leyla Formoso. Naked Brothers Band The Movie, based on Nickelodeon’s new series, will be released on DVD in spring 2007. The release will include bonuses such as an exclusive, extended play CD sampler with music songs from the movie. Jonathan Taylor has been appointed VP/Public Relations Starz Media. Responsible for all press and PR activities for the production/distribution company, Taylor will report to Tom Southwick, SVP/Corporate Communications. Taylor had been SVP, Lippin Group, the PR agency that represents a range of clients including Starz Media and Starz Entertainment. The Lippin Group will maintain its existing relationship with Starz.
