Good morning. It's
Friday, April 23, 2004,
and this is your first early morning
briefing.
Quite the flurry of activity late yesterday afternoon -- Ed Wilson
quits his post as President of NBC Enterprises followed with
speculation that Steve Rosenberg, President of Universal Domestic TV,
will end up with the pivotal NBC Universal top post once the merger is
complete next month. Then the other shoe drops - Steve Rosenberg
has also quit. And speculation abounds: As rumor
has it, Wilson was to be given the job as head of the new syndicated
division (which got Rosenberg thinking about packing his bags), but
decided to leave the offer on the table and not renew his contract.
Then when NBC turned to Rosenberg, his plans were already in motion to
leave. Whether NBC will be able to coax him back in the house,
remains to be seen.
Turner's TBS/TNT networks celebrated their upfront
presentation/schedule/brand yesterday in NYC and announced a new
contemporary tag for TBS; as well as a couple of new program series
coming to the nets this season.
First the TBS brand -- in an effort to make this network the
Caliente of funny', TBS has updated its look, adopted a new tag
line: very funny; and has decided to concentrate on what makes
people laugh. To that end, in conjunction with a series of branding
and promotional spots, the net will add S#x and the City, Everybody Loves
Raymond and Yes Dear to the schedule this summer and King of Queens in
2006. Additionally, a couple of new series are coming to the Sked:
Gilligan's Island - the reality series - in which exec prod Mike Fleiss
(The Bachelor) will cast people in the roles of skipper, first mate,
millionaire and his wife, a professor, a movie star, and a girl from the
heartland, and put them on a deserted island. This show comes to
TBS in December 2004, and the network has already ordered up a second
season. By the way, Sherwood Schwartz and his son Lloyd are also exec
producing, and the theme song is pretty much the same, if not a little
zipped up. Outback Jack from exec prod Bruce Nash, takes a twist on the
Bachelor set up, in that the lovely and sophisticated ladies are dropped
into the middle of the Australian outback, where along with vying for the
attentions of the handsome bachelor, will also be surviving in the
outback. This series launches on June 22 with 8 eps.
Over to TNT. Original programming is the name of the
game and coming to TNT this summer is The Grid, a 6 hour limited series
starring Dylan McDermott, Julianna Margulies and Tom Skerritt; and next
summer from Steven Spielberg is a 12 hour limited series called Into the
West. TNT also returns with its Johnson & Johnson Spotlight original
film, this year it's The Wool Cap, again starring William H. Macy and
director Steven Schacter. Miniseries for this summer is Salem's Lot
based on the Stephen King novel, and in July the movie Evil Kneivel
starring George Eads (CSI) and Beau Bridges. And coming in the
fall, The Librarian - a sort of Indiana Jones adventure film from Dean
Devlin (Independence Day, The Patriot).
