Good Morning.  It's Wednesday, January 31, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

Indian company Ushodaya Enterprises Limited's (UEL) Board of Directors has approved the U.S.' The Blackstone Group purchase of a 26% share in UEL.  The UEL deal is valued at $465 million made up of a $275 million investment and $190 million bank financing.  Blackstone also picks up a seat on the UEL Board.  The deal is, of course, subject to regulatory approval by Foreign Investment Promotion Board and the Ministry of Information.  By the way, this is India's biggest private equity agreement ever.  UEL is the parent of South India's Eenadu TV broadcasting group, the fourth largest private TV broadcasting network in India.  And UEL's parent is Ramoji Group, the owner of Asia's largest studio, Ramoji Film City.  Bit of a family tree.

The History Channel UK, a joint venture between A&E Television Networks (AETN) and British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB), signed an agreement to distribute The History Channel to Scandinavia, including Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.  Norway's Canal Digital will debut the channel in Scandinavia tomorrow to nearly one million households in the region.  The channel will be broadcast in English with local subtitles for each of the four countries.  The History Channel in Scandinavia will be programmed by The History Channel UK, but will offer a separate schedule from the UK service.

YTV Canada, Inc. has received approval from The Canadian Radio Television and Telecommunications Commission for a broadcast license to launch and operate The Anime Channel, targeted to Teens 18+, in Canada. YTV's license for The Anime Channel will expire August 31, 2013. Under its application, YTV stated The Anime Channel lineup will feature a minimum of 65% of programming broadcast per year will be anime and a maximum of 35% will be anime-related programming content.

A new weekly 30-minute documentary program will make its way to CNN International on February 17.  The World's Untold Stories, airing on weekends, was made in collaboration with the U.K.'s Journeyman Pictures.  At this point, CNN International has picked up 25 documentaries from Journeyman for airing this year.  The first films of the series will be The Very Thin Blue Line, Land of Missing Children, A Tale of Two Women, and Road to Terrorism.

Artificial Life, Inc. and 3 Hong Kong teamed up to launch the America's Next Top Model mobile game in Hong Kong on the latter's Planet 3 portal.  It is based off of cycle 7 and its participants.  Players can work with one of the thirteen avatars to help her become the top model.  Artificial Life is a Hong Kong-based  3G technology and application provider.

Part of the new Smithsonian Networks' 60-program VOD lineup will include a co-production between the network and BBC.  The two networks will work together on a version of Timewatch, BBC's longest running history series.  Smithsonian Networks' high def programming will include documentaries, events, and shorts exploring key scientific, cultural, and historical events.

CNN Headline News and FX have been added to the family tier on Singapore's StarHub Digital Cable.  In addition, Channel V China, Channel V Taiwan and TTV World can now be found on the Chinese Plus II tier at no extra charge.

FremantleMedia's Poker Face format had on its poker face and won the game in Colombia.  El Jugador premiered recently on RCN in the #1 spot in Colombia across all targets with a 28.7 HH rating, 67% above the closest competitor, Caracol Television. At its peak, Poker Face had 32.6/52 HH rating.

Peace Point Entertainment Group Inc. is a bevy of activity these days.  The Canadian company is going virtual in Second Life, producing mobisodes for Ithentic, and launching select Peace Point series on multiple platforms including DVD, and iTunes.  Peace Point worked with Loop Media to create and launch its TV show Food Jammers to Second Life's virtual inhabitants in mid-February.  As part of its business changes, Peace Point Entertainment Group Inc. named Eric Blais as Director/New Media.

CROSS-MARKET:

It seems Fox producers got a bit of a talking to yesterday.  Peter Liguori, Fox Entertainment's President, told all at a town meeting that they needed to pay attention to diversity in front of the cameras and behind the scenes with cast, crew, and writers or they may risk losing a series pickup.  Over 40 producers of current series and pilots were present, according to Variety.

HISPANIC MARKET:

SiboneyUSA has created a new Hispanic market milk ad campaign for Milk Processor Education Program that launched this month.  The campaign includes two 30-second ads. The ads will air in spot markets on Univision, Telefutura, Telemundo, and Azteca throughout the year.

AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:

In commemoration of Black History Month, BET J has a menu of specials and original programming.  Here are but a few of the many…
  • Music/Concert Specials on February 4:
    • Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue (2p) - A music special examining the life of musician Miles Davis
    • Mint Condition: Livin' the Luxury Brown (3p) - The R&B band's return to the live stage from DC's renowned 9:30 Club
    • B.B. King in Concert (4p) - A live concert recorded at the BET J studios with B.B. and "Lucille"
    • The Rebirth of Kirk Franklin Live (5p) - A concert showcasing the repertoire from the CD release "The Rebirth of Kirk Franklin"
  • Original programming/documentaries include Black Stories (February 5 at 9p), masters of American Music Series (February 11, 18, and 25 at 2p), Lyric Cafe (February 28 at 8p), and BET J History Makers (February 20, 22, and 27 at 7). 

In celebration of Black History Month, XM will offer up a programming schedule that includes special "Soul Edition" episodes throughout February.  Additionally, each Friday in February, The Power (XM 169) will broadcast speeches from prominent African Americans, offering analysis and discussion on their relevance today. The channel will also feature interviews with living legends of black history and black sports heroes, as well as a Black Historian Lecture series Monday through Friday for the entire month.

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

Logo's The Big Gay Sketch Show is all set to premiere on April 24 at 10p.  The six-ep sketch comedy series is headed by a cast of eight up-and-coming comedic actors. It features a combination of traditional and music-based sketches, pop culture parodies and recurring characters, all from a LGBT perspective. The show is produced by Oh Really? Productions with exec producers Rosie O'Donnell, Dan MacDonald, Joe Del Hierro, Jim Biederman, and Scott King.  In addition to airing on Logo's TV channel, LOGOonline.com will offer bonus sketches, outtakes, cast crew interviews, photos and more.

EXECUTIVE MOVES:

Kevin MacLellan has been named as President/Comcast Entertainment Group, International, from his previous position as E! Networks' SVP/International. Heading up the new division, he will oversee Comcast's international entertainment properties that include E! Entertainment Television, Style Network, Versus (formerly OLN), and G4. His new role will also include management of all new media businesses, licensing/merchandising, and home video and DVD distribution outside the U.S. in addition to the television business. Kevin will report to Comcast Entertainment Group President Ted Harbert.

Azteca America pulled in Ivan Perez as VP and Director/Sales for Miami.  He will work with advertising agencies and clients in the Southeast territory, as well as developing new network accounts.  Ivan was recently Director/Ad Sales for the East Coast with Si TV Cable Network.

Bejuba! Entertainment has named Sandrine Pechels de Saint Sardos as VP/Distribution.  She will work on sales strategy development and new business opportunities in addition to managing global sales of the company's TV, DVD/home entertainment, digital, publishing, and licensing and merchandising rights.  Sandrine was recently with Classic Media.  She will be based in New York and report to Bejuba! president Tatiana Kober.

VIBE Media Group named Robert Ingram as Associate Publisher of its VIBE magazine. He will manage the mag's diversity initiatives.  He was previously Senior Account Executive at Black Enterprise Magazine.
