Good Morning.  It's Tuesday, January 30, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

MercuryMedia International and PBS are partnering up to offer PBS content to airline passengers globally through Mercury's in-flight distribution unit.   Some of the shows to be offered on flights include Texas Ranch House, Ken Burns' Jazz, Jean Michel Cousteau's Ocean Adventures, Suze Orman: For the Young Fabulous and Broke, Lewis and Clark, and Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson. PBS will add 10-20 hours of new available content for participating airlines to choose from each month.

Astral Media's The Movie Network will launch its MMore HD on February 1 on Rogers Cable's Ontario service, followed by additional eastern Canadian rollouts in the coming months. The 24-hour high-def channel features simulcasts of HD programming from The Movie Network's MMore, MExcess, MFun! and MFest channels.  The programming includes HBO and Showtime series, Hollywood movies, original The Movie Network drama shows, all uncut and commercial free. The service will also present action movies from MExcess, comedies from MFun! and independent and foreign cinema from MFest.

Chinese authorities have refused to renew both ESPN and Star Sports' permits to air in the country as a foreign network.  No explanation about the refusal was released by China's State Administration for Radio, Film and Television. With no explanation, speculation is it has something to do with soccer rights as several local Chinese channels grouped together to air English Premier League matches.  Other speculate it's a simple administrative issue. ESPN Star Sports contends that it is still involved in the rights renewal process.  Both channels are operated by ESPN Star Sports (News Corporation/Disney joint venture) from Singapore. 

Two preschool series will make their Canadian debut on Family Channel next month, as part of its weekday morning Playhouse block (8:45-11:50a) that features Disney programming.
  • Handy Manny launches on the network on Wednesday, February 7 at 10:30a.  The CGI animated series, which features a bilingual component,
  • revolves around Handy Garcia, a neighborhood handyman.  The series is produced by Nelvana Limited in association with Disney Channel.
  • Johnny and the Sprites will bow on Thursday, February 8 at 10:30a, The music-based series includes a mix of live-action and puppet content and incorporates a curriculum that promotes and models positive social behavior, respect and tolerance.  Created by writer, executive producer and its star, John Tartaglia (Avenue Q).

MTV Networks India is teaming up with Adlabs to co-produce and jointly own youth-targeted movies for release in India.  Adlabs would work with MTV's Fully Faltoo Films to take care of the final script, cast members, and the director.  More to come on who will be in what productions when.

Canada's Global Television will premiere the second season of its comedy series, The Jane Show, on February 7 at 10p.  The 13 episode half hour series from Shaftesbury Film will continue to focus on Jane's exploration of corporate culture and lessons in office life.

Priority Public Relations (PPR) has been named the agency-of-record for Singapore's Media Development Authority, a government agency created in part to develop global awareness of Singapore's media industry. Priority Public Relations is charged with handling global trade and business media coverage of the Singapore Media Fusion initiative and its resulting projects and alliances. PPR recently worked with MDA in launching the Singapore Media Fusion initiative in October 2006.

HISPANIC MARKET:

MTV Tr3s has brought Descubre and Download to the market. The multi-platform outlet is looking to promote emerging Latino artists. Pacha Massive, the Latin Alternative Music Conference battle of the bands 2005 winners, is the first "Descubre and Download" artist and will be available on platforms including MiTRL, MTVTr3s.com, MTV Tr3s Radio, MTV.com, and MTV Networks' URGE digital music service.  Descubre and Download showcases emerging artists in 1-2 minute vignettes with artist's bites attached to their videos, daily rotation on MTV Tr3s for one month, inclusion in genre relevant shows, and appearances on the network's MiTRL. Meanwhile, online the artist page will feature a free audio download of the current single and additional content such as a photo gallery, EPK excerpts, blog space, and more. The artist's music and vignettes be also be distributed through various MTV Tr3s wireless carriers including Verizon Wireless, Cingular, Sprint, Amp'd Mobile and Helio.  Descubre and Download is fashioned after MTV's Discover and Download.

WSBS-Mega TV Channel 22 is launching Oppenheimer Presenta, an in-depth political analysis program conducted by columnist Andres Oppenheimer. The show, which airs Sundays at 10p exclusively on Mega TV, is already an established international political program reaching over 57 million households in Latin America, France, and Spain.

Discovery Networks U.S. Hispanic Group's Discovery en Espanol is all set to debut Discovery Hoy: Atrapados on February 11 at 9p.  The program examines the dangerous industry of mining and what happened at the ill-fated Pasta de Conchos in Mexico.  In addition, Discovery Travel & Living (Viajar y Vivir) will premiere Con Gusto y Saz:n on February 20 at 830p.  The show, hosted by Andres Garcia, Jr., features the evolution of traditional Latin dishes, chefs creating new Hispanic menus, and travels across the U.S. to restaurants.

AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:

TV One's programming for lineup for Black History Month includes both a mix of premiere and encore programs.  Here are some of the many programs…
  • February 26 at 10p - TV One on One - An interview between Cathy Hughes and comedian/activist/entrepreneur Dick Gregory
  • February 6 at 8p - The John H. Johnson Story - The life and achievements of the businessman who founded the Ebony/Jet magazine company
  • February 7 at 2p - Reparations - A documentary focusing on the controversial issue of whether African Americans should be compensated for the injustices of slavery
  • February 20 at 8p - Buffalo Soldiers  A 60-minute documentary about post Civil War cavalry units of African American soldiers that helped to conquer, map and explore the American West

Nickelodeon celebrates Black History Month with a range of programming, including a line-up of interstitials.  The vignettes feature regular kids and Nickelodeon's star Lil' J.J. sharing their own stories about family, friends and traditions and will air on the network throughout February, as well as on TurboNick on Nick.com.  Beginning February 10, Nick Jr. and NOGGIN will introduce a series of 30-second interstitials profiling great figures in African American History; the spots will also stream on Nick Jr. Video on NickJr.com.  Additionally, six Nick News specials focusing on Black History Month will air on Cable in the Classroom on Wednesdays and Fridays at 6p, from February 2.  Both the current issues of Nickelodeon Magazine and Nick Jr. Magazine include a number of Black History Month related content.

EXECUTIVE MOVES:

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) named Andy Armstrong as Managing Director, U.K. division from his previous position as marketing director. Andy is replacing Marek Antoniak as of February 1, who is retiring after 18 years at SPHE.

Bilingual music/entertainment network LATV named Howard Bolter as President and COO.  Based in LA, he will be in charge of daily operations including business development, legal and business affairs, production, operations, engineering, IT, and Human Resources.  Most recently, Mr. Bolter was the EVP at Wobo Media.
