Edition 1/24/07 Good Morning. It's Wednesday, January 24, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Paramount Pictures International (PPI) and London-based MTV Films Europe have inked a first-look production agreement. This falls into line with PPI's reported plan to up its global purchases and local co-production agreements. The two companies will work alongside each other on film projects. Other PPI news …the company took on the U.K., Spanish and French rights to Goodbye Bafana. VOOM HD Networks' Equator HD has signed a deal with Media International Corporation to acquire more than 20 hours of HD television content from Japanese pubcaster NHK. The programming, which consists of a documentary series and ten stand-alone documentary specials, will air on Equator HD. The network acquired seasons three and four of the NHK HD documentary series Wild Secrets, as well as ten stand-alone documentary titles dealing with ecology and issues of cultural, wildlife and environmental concerns that impact the world. These titles, all between 49-52 minutes long, will air in 1Q2007. Quite soon after buying 2waytraffic and its Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, Celador International already inked several new international agreements for Millionaire. The show will make its way to China following a format agreement with China Media Power to produce a local version with 104 eps set to launch this May. According to Chinese regulations, the show can only include celebs with all winnings to be donated to a charity. Other happenings for the Millionaire format include deals with Slovenia's RTV for a 40-ep minimum and Slovakia's Slovak Television for a 35-ep minimum, both to launch this spring. Buena Vista Television has renewed its U.S. syndicated rights agreement for another 2 years until 2011. The Body Shop is partnering with MTV Networks International to launch an HIV and AIDS prevention campaign targeting 25 year olds and younger across 44 nations. The initiative, titled Spray to Change Attitudes, will include Rougeberry Eau de Toilette, a limited edition co-branded fragrance, to be sold globally at The Body Shop from January 29 - March 30. For every bottle sold, they will donate the proceeds to MTVNI's The Staying Alive Foundation public charity. The Body Shop's retail stores and MTV's local channels around the world will hold events through the end of February in addition to news updates, contests, HIV/AIDS discussions, and more. CROSS-MARKET: MTV and Verizon Wireless announced a new event series titled MTV Live which will feature live artist performances. The monthly series will be recorded in front of a live audience at the Hard Rock Cafe NY in Times Square and will be presented as a multi-platform program across MTV, MTV2, mtvU, MTV Tr3s, MTV.com and on MTV Mobile on V CAST. MTV Live will be powered by Verizon Wireless and the first episode will premiere on MTV on February 6 at 1130p with a commercial free performance by Fall Out Boy. Artists Nas, Akon, and Gym Class Heroes have been booked for future shows. The series will be specifically customized for each screen with a live interactive text-to-screen element, video footage, and more. Jamie Foxx will be heard around the nation as of this spring on a new SIRIUS Satellite Radio channel, where he will serve as an on-air host, contributor, and a co-exec producer with Marcus King. The Foxxhole will be a SIRIUS exclusive urban comedy, entertainment (music, shorts, radio, etc.) and lifestyle channel. A daily segment will feature snippets from Jamie wherever he may be while he and other contributors will air a weekly program with original comedy. Superstation WGN will air Wyclef Jean's AllStar Jam at Carnegie Hall on January 27 at 12 noon. Wyclef Jean created the benefit concert with the goal of raising funds to support inner city music programs. The show features a line-up with performances by artists such as Destiny's Child, Marc Anthony, Stevie Wonder, Macy Gray and Eric Clapton. Sponsors include Wal-Mart, P&G and Kraft Foods. The 2007 edition of the Copa Toyota Libertadores returns to Fox Sports en Espanol with a kick off today at 10p between Mexico's Club America and Peru's Sporting Cristal. Featuring 138 matches, the tournament concludes with the Finals taking place on June 13 and 20. This year's Copa Toyota Libertadores includes 38 clubs from Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Paraguay, Venezuela, Uruguay, Colombia, Chile, Peru, and Bolivia, battling for this Latin American soccer championship. All matches will be telecast live in Spanish and exclusively on Fox Sports en Espanol. Round of 16 matches will take place on May 2 and 9, quarterfinals on May 16 and 23, and semifinals on May 30 and June 6. GLR Networks will air a live unplugged broadcast of pop band RBD's concert tonight. The 60-minute broadcast will be delivered to the U.S. live from Mexico at 7p. This concert is part of GLR Networks' Basico 40 Concert Series, a 1-hour live broadcast "unplugged" concert series with top Latin pop artists. The 16 Super Estrella Network (Entravision) stations set to air the concert are KSSE-KSSC-KSSD (LA-San Diego-Ventura), KSEH/El (Centro-Yuma), KRRN (Las Vegas), KSES (Monterey-Salinas), KRZY (Albuquerque), KVVA-KDVA (Phoenix), KYSE (El Paso), KJMN (Denver), KLOB (Palm Springs), KAIQ (Lubbock), KTSE (Modesto), and KXSE (Sacramento). AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET: BET premiered a new 6-part original series this week. The 30-minute One Night Only airs on Tuesdays at 730p. The reality docu-soap follows a group of high school kids and their drama teacher in New Orleans as they race to put on the Dreamgirls play. It is also set against the backdrop of the Hurricane Katrina tragedy and these teenagers struggle to deal with the rebuilding of their homes, school, and community while also trying to enjoy their teenage years. The Dreamgirls' film star, Jennifer Hudson, will make a guest appearance as will actor Blair Underwood, Dwayne Martin and Tisha Campbell Martin, choreographer George Faison and TLC host/celebrity makeup artist Damone Roberts. concert.tv will celebrate Black History Month with performances by such artists as Thelonious Monk, Wyclef Jean and Macy Gray, Alicia Keys, Jay Z, Mary J. Blige, Bobbie Darin, Ray Charles, Al Green and many more. The site airs live music performances and documentaries. ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET: Priority Public Relations has been named the agency of record for Gang TV. The Singapore-based company, headed by Gregory Ang, assists entertainment companies develop, launch, market and manage channel operations throughout the Asia-Pacific region. MUSLIM MARKET: Muslim teen girls, of whom there are upwards of 400,000 in the US, are getting their own periodical this month with the debut of Muslim Girl Magazine. The bi-monthly lifestyle magazine is targeted to American Muslim girls 14-18 yrs old and aims to challenge the stereotypes of Muslim girls in the US and will feature teen girls that are equally proud of both being an American and a Muslim. Muslim Girl Magazine is published by Canada-based execuGo Media, and distributed worldwide by U.S.-based RCS. Among the advertisers featured in the first issue of the magazine are Fox Broadcasting and Oxford University Press. According to a study of U.S. Muslim teen girls commissioned by the magazine, this group is not too different from the average U.S. teen girl in terms of what they like (e.g. TV, internet, shopping, videogames, the phone etc). Though there are some differences - for example, Muslim girls report they get their news from Al Jazeera, socialize at IslamiCity and among the things they do outside of school is study the Qur'an. Thus, the magazine will feature regular departments/columns including advice, Qur'an Notes, and Hot List (e.g. TV reviews). EXECUTIVE MOVES: BET Networks named Scott Mills as President of the newly created Digital Media Group.
